Triangles and squares
Purpose: (Why am I doing this? What am I trying to learn?) We are trying to investigate what patterns are and the connection patterns have to problem solving and addition, subtraction or multiplication.
I will: (What am I going to do?) 1. We are going to investigate numbers to find which collections can be arranged as a square or a triangle.
2. We are going to find out how we record this pattern as an addition or multiplication sum.
3. We can find these numbers on a 100s chart and see if we can predict what number would come next in this pattern. SKILLS

Numbers can be organised and constructed to represent information. ALL LEVELS Making patterns
Purpose: (Why am I doing this? What am I trying to learn?) We are trying to investigate the form of patterns, follow a rule and predict what will happen in the pattern.
I will: (What am I going to do?) 1. We are going to collect and organise tools to show a pattern that matches a rule.
2. We are going to find different ways of recording our pattern.
3. We will use the pattern to predict what will come next in the pattern.

Naming patterns
Purpose: (Why am I doing this? What am I trying to learn?) We are going to investigate if there is a pattern in the names of numbers and if that is connected to the way a number is organised.
I will: (What am I going to do?) 1. We are going to look at number name cards and talk about how we can represent the numbers.
2. We are going to organise the numbers and see if there is a pattern to the number names.
3. We are going to compare our ideas to number names in other languages.
4. We are going to see if we can find ways to model the numbers to show the way the number is said.

100s of patterns
Purpose: (Why am I doing this? What am I trying to learn?) We are trying to investigate the number patterns on a hundreds chart.
I will: (What am I going to do?) 1. We are going to look at the hundreds chart and look for patterns in the vertical rows on the 100s chart.
2. We are going to find different ways of recording and explaining the patterns we find.
3. We are going to explore this pattern using the constant function on the calculators and describe the pattern using an addition sum.

Number sequences and patterns
Purpose: (Why am I doing this? What am I trying to learn?) We are trying to investigate how counting in sequence can form a pattern and how it is connected to addition.
I will: (What am I going to do?) 1. Create a set of numbers from 0 -50. Decide on the skip counting pattern we will use to make the pattern.
2. We will use se our tools to model the skip counting pattern and record the sequence of numbers.
3. We will investigate the different ways we can record this pattern as a sum.

Make a prediction
Purpose: (Why am I doing this? What am I trying to learn?) We are going to investigate how patterns can be used to form predictions and discuss how this could be used as a problem solving strategy.
I will: (What am I going to do?) 1. We are going to look at a sequence of numbers and discuss what we see and what pattern we think is happening.
2. We are going to test our ideas to prove what the pattern is and write a rule to explain the pattern.
3. We will then extend the pattern and see if our rule works.

Doubles
Purpose: (Why am I doing this? What am I trying to learn?) We are going to investigate what happens if we double a number. Is there a pattern that can help us predict what comes next? We are going to find 2 ways of recording the pattern.
I will: (What am I going to do?) 1. We are investigate what happens to a number between 1 and 10 if we double it.
2. We are going to organise objects to show this pattern and we are going to record the answers on a hundreds chart
3. We are going to find 2 ways to record this pattern using groups and addition.
4. We are going to use what we know to predict what will come next in a new sequence of numbers.

Use a pattern
Purpose: (Why am I doing this? What am I trying to learn?) We are trying to identify what the pattern is and then use it to complete a necklace. We are going to examine the attributes that are repeating in the pattern.
I will: (What am I going to do?) 1. We are going to look at a necklace that has been started for us.
2. We are going to talk about the pattern we can see and what attributes are repeating in the pattern.
3. We are going to use what we know to complete the pattern and necklace.

Patterns in the answers
Purpose: (Why am I doing this? What am I trying to learn?) We are trying to investigate multiplication charts and see if we can find a pattern and use it to predict what would come next if we extended the pattern.
I will: (What am I going to do?) 1. We are going to look at the multiplication charts and find the ones that have a pattern sequence in the answer column.
2. We are going to find different ways of describing the pattern in the answer column.
3. We are going to test our idea by extending the pattern and then double checking it using a calculator.

Patterns predictions
Purpose: (Why am I doing this? What am I trying to learn?) We are trying to investigate a pattern and write a rule to match it. We are going to use this rule to predict what will happen in a certain part of the pattern sequence.
I will: (What am I going to do?) 1. We are going to look at the pattern card and form a prediction about the pattern.
2. We are going to test our prediction and then write a rule to explain the pattern.
3. We are going to use the rule to predict what will happen in a certain part of the pattern sequence.

Purpose: (Why am I doing this? What am I trying to learn?) We are trying to investigate how we can use a number sequence to create an art pattern.
I will: (What am I going to do?) 1. We are going to look at a number pattern card and talk about the different ways we could record this using an art pattern.
2. We are going to find different ways of recording and representing this pattern.
3. We are going to use our ideas about patterns and make a new number card for someone else to use for this activity.
