Teaching Statement

An important aspect of teaching is to make the student feel like they are part of
the learning experience. Learning is, of course, the main purpose of education. It is the
goal of every student and the task of every teacher to increase knowledge and
understanding in the classroom.

During my years of teaching experience, I realized that many students who do not
have basic mathematics skills limit themselves in their careers and life. This is because
they began by avoiding science classes specifically in mathematics and physics.
Therefore, I strongly believe that focusing on clear step by step understanding, repetition,
allowing students to present their work to the class and developing of problem solving
skills so they can work assigned home work problems in the internet. I will reinforce
these skills through visualization of computerized software (simulation) packages and
real life application of mathematics into physics. This will significantly facilitate the
understanding of the subject that I prepare for and the student’s confidence will increase.
Soon, they will begin to take part in learning by answering simple questions about the
prepared subject.

I applied these philosophies during my teaching career, when I teach physics,

laboratory and assisted undergraduate students in their research. From these experiences
in teaching, I now understand that an effective teacher must build trust with the student. I
have learned to develop this trust through respecting the student needs, listening,
preparing for class and encouraging an open environment for the students.

My greatest joy came from teaching students during office hours. This allowed
me to instruct students in a one-on- one situation. My goal was to foster an understanding
of the subject and academic future they are involved in. I achieved this goal by holding
individual meetings, assigning and discussing articles, and holding group discussions
with all students about their academic issues. Moreover, I encouraged students to express
their ideas and thoughts about any subject or academic issues.

Lastly, while I favor individual effort as much as possible, I believe a group

approach to certain exercises such as student projects should be encourage whenever
appropriate. As a result by applying my teaching philosophy students and I will achieve
goals which are to increase student’s knowledge and understanding of prepared subject.
