Standard 7 Instructional Planning

Title: Incredibox unit lesson plan

Date: Spring 2013

Artifact Description:
The following artifact is a ten-day unit lesson plan for an upper level music class
(freshmen/sophomore group). Each day is designed in step by step formation for the students
to end up with their own rhythmic vocal composition. I built in the use of a free website that
allows for fun and creative exploration of rhythmic vocals before any work was to be done.
This different kind of lesson plan organized the students into groups of four and leads them
systematically to the curriculum goal of understanding how to read and write music. These
bulletted lesson objectives reflect my understanding of the content% but more importantly
showcases my understanding of how to relay that message in appropriate educational bites.

Alignment: Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment:
This artifact best aligns with standard seven of the Wisconsin Teacher Development and
Licensure Standards which states: Teachers are able to plan different kinds of lessons. The
teacher organizes and plans systematic instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter,
pupils, the community, and curriculum goals."
This artifact aligns with standard seven because it is representative of my role as a
knowledgeable and systematic educator. This unit indicates ability to grasp student-learning in
a step-by-step process with the inclusion of appropriate and exciting resources. I show my
understanding of music learning by including the division for group interaction and
cooperation. Some curriculum goals are easier than others to arrive at% and this lesson plan
tackles the sometimes far-reaching goal of composition (personal music creation). A students
ability to learn is critical in deciding how to help them process not only new information, but to
be able to put themselves in the vulnerable position to create.

UW-Platteville School of Education, Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Statement Alignment
I believe this experience best aligns with KS3.c. of the UW-Platteville School of Education,
Knowledge, Skill, and Disposition Statements which states:
Engages Students in Learning. The candidate has the ability to engage students in the learning
process by linking appropriate content, based upon suitable instructional materials and
resources to students, knowledge and experience, being certain that all students are cognitively
engaged in the activities/assignments and that the students actively contribute to the content
design. Instruction is highly coherent and appropriately paced for all students and allows for
reflection and closure as appropriate."
This experience aligns with this standard because my lesson objectives are suitable to student-
learning in an engaging fashion. The activities are designed with student-directed learning in
mind with highly coherent and even obvious instruction at the forefront. The days are paced for
the ability of all students to be assisted by myself or their group members, as none can move on
to the next learning objective until all are ready. In this way I can also assess their progress and
continually make them aware of the end goal and final grading rubric.

Reflection
What I learned about teaching/learning:
I learned the importance of planning ahead. However, without intent to connect on a deeper
level educationally with the students basic plans dont allow for multiple intelligences,
inclusion or creating an environment and culture for personal and social growth. All these
things are obtained through thoughtful consideration of your students on their different
maturity, emotional and educational levels. Each new day of your unit lesson plans, teachers
must be prepared for initial goals to shift. Students and school district events will throw a
wrench in any best-laid plan. Although this artifact is merely a pre-student-teaching idea, my
education and experiences tells me that this lesson plan is a positive instructional plan.

What I learned about myself as a prospective educator:
As I prospective educator, I have learned the importance of planning. I know this has already
been stated in the document, but planning is of utmost importance. Over-planning is key to
making sure students are always motivated in a constructive direction. When I go over my
Incredibox lesson plan" I am reminded of how it may be unrealistic to complete all the given
objectives in the 10-day format. However, if time should not permit it all to completed, at least
the students were never left idle and in fact, found personal motivation to continue the lesson
themselves because of their given accomplishment. Have high expectations for your students
and plan accordingly.
