Read the excerpt from Terry Pratchett’s

novel, Unseen Academicals.

In it, Juliet (the pretty one) receives a love

letter/poem from Trev. She can’t read it,
so she asks her friend Glenda (the
ordinary one) to read it & explain it to her.
 Comparing/Contrasting
• First paragraph: “The Passionate Shepherd to
His Love”—what is its tone? Explain how
specific examples develop/reveal that tone.
• Second paragraph: “The Nymph’s Reply to the
Shepherd”—what is its tone? How does it
compare to the previous poem? Explain how
specific examples develop/reveal that tone.
• Third paragraph: What are your thoughts on
pastoral poetry? Which poem did you prefer?
