Hello Classmates in EDU 417 Cognitive Studies Capstone,

Introduction
My name is Genna Albert. I am originally from Philadelphia, Pa but I moved to Pottstown, Pa. I started
Ashford University in September of 2010 and received an Associates degree in Early Childhood
Education. Currently I am working on a Cognitive studies Bachelors degree. My future educational goals
are to go for my Masters in Special education but it is not set in stone yet. There are many options to
weigh out first before I make any decisions. The special educational field is my passion though. I would
like to get involved in special needs therapy and early intervention. The special needs community needs
trained professionals with the rise in special needs children in our population today.
I am a single mother of two very wonderful children. My daughter Josie is 10, and my son Marky is 8
soon to be 9 next month. I have learned so much from both of my children. My children were my
motivation in returning to school but my son is where I get my passion for special education. He was
diagnosed with autism in December of 2008, and this has made life challenging in many ways. When my
son was diagnosed I did a lot of research and asked a lot of questions which lead me back to school. I
definitely want to make the world a better place for my children because my son is not the only one that
is affected by his autism my whole family has been affected in so many ways. Children with learning
disabilities are not less worthy of a good quality of life. I truly believe children with disabilities are
different not less.

Introduction Questions
What is your general understanding of brain-compatible learning?
My knowledge of this isnt what I would call extensive but this is the new idea of using
neuroscience along with education to better understand how children learn and teaching methods
based on that. The way our society has change and the influences of new technologies education
needs a concept that failing school systems could use to reach students.
Do you have any experience with brain-compatible learning in or out of the classroom? If so,
what are some of those experiences? If not, what do you hope to learn about brain-compatible
learning in this course?
I have a special needs child and he has an IEP(individualized educational plan) so in school my
son receives a different kind of education based on his individualized needs as well as therapies
to further expand his educational and social needs. I did have a brain based learning class within
my studies and expanding this subject for me peaks my interest. Eric Jensen has done a lot of
research on this and his theories make sense. I will use his research to back up my own opinions
and theories on this subject. http://www.jensenlearning.com/ is a great site with a lot of
information on brain based learning. I would like to expand what I know on this subject through
this class.
