Goals:
Learn about the economic changes that occurred during
WWII.
Learn about what was rationed during WWII.
Learn about what steps were taken to ration supplies
during WWII.
Objectives:
Content/Knowledge:
Students will be able to understand why rationing was put
into effect during WWII and what products were rationed
during WWII.
Process/Skills:
Students will be able to understand the process of
rationing products, distributing ration cards, and keeping
track of the rationing process.
Values/Dispositions:
Students will be able to calculate and understand how
rationing benefited the United States during WWII.

Rationale:
Rationing was something during WWII that affected
everyone in the United States, not just those directly
involved in or with the war. It is important to study
something that affected everyone during a time period.

15.B.3b Explain the effects of choice and competition on
individuals and the economy as a whole.
15.E.3b Explain how laws and government policies (e.g.,
property rights, contract enforcement, standard
weights/measurements) establish rules that help a market
economy function effectively.

Evaluate the portions of food people received
during WWII when the food was being
rationed.
Look at the amount of food (numbers) and
analyze the numbers to see if that was enough
food to last a person one week.
Write a one paragraph paper on your
analysis.

and take notes about what is going on in the
video.
Create a speech (similar to the video) about
what rationing was like during WWII.

WWII and how it affected the people write a
poem from the perspective of a person that
lived during WWII.
Try to imagine what it must have been like to
not be able to get as much of things as you
would like and how you would feel about that.

Examine several different replicas of ration
books/stamps in class.
Evaluate them and compare/contrast them.
Write a two paragraph analysis of the ration
card replicas that you have examined.

In groups of two, examine the photos of
ration books/stamps on this website.
Make your own replica of a ration book from
WWII.
Make ration stamp replicas to go inside your
ration book replica.

Get into groups of two.
One person receives copies of ration books
and stamps and one person is the person at
the store.
Students take turns seeing how much they
can get using the ration cards versus how
much they can get in the present day.
Discuss with partner the differences between
WWII era and now.

Look at and examine the ration book replicas
in the classroom.
Write a three paragraph analysis of what it
must have been like to have everything that
you bought rationed out.

on rationing and the evironment.

Assessment:
1. The papers and poem will be formally
assessed using checklists, but the replicas and
the rest of the activities will be informally
assessed.
