Within Dr. kings speech on the steps of the Lincoln memorial he personifies the savior of all less
fortunate people in America, and in doing so creates in the minds of the audience a man who
understands and connects with them, by depicting to their eyes the promised land(26).
With Dr. kings emphatical speech, he uses imagery in the second paragraph lines 2-4 to reel in the
audience, saying This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who
had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. In the second paragraph when Dr. King speaks about the
emancipation proclamation he describes it in a way that makes it seem as if the document was a savior
to all enslaved peoples. The fact that the emancipation proclamation is spoken of at this point leads into
Dr. King addressing the past. This device addresses the bright future because in this moment It came as
a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity(4) for the slaves of the past. The intended
happiness of the (described people in the speech) makes it so that the first sentence of the following
paragraph contradicts the claim of the Emancipation Proclamation that all A.A. would be freed and given
rights. This works with persuasion since now king has created due to his choice in diction by using the
word captivity and injustice. The audience is forced to feel a need to standup for and protect the hurt
people of the past. The sentence came as a great beacon light of hope..(2-3) empowers the
audience by using the word great beacon light of hope. These words make it seem as if the people being
spoken of felt empowered and uplifted. The idea of ancestors being uplifted and encouraged would
make the audience feel the same. The imagery present in this sentence is when the words great
beacon lightseared in the flames.joyous daybreak.(p2) The imagery here would make it so that the
audience would be able to due to the simple images depicted be able to relate to the hurt and despair
the slaves felt and therefore continue fighting to end segregation to certify that all people are made
equal in the united states ensuring a bright and prosperous future for the country.

Use of empowering conational devices when saying the word dream in the last paragraph The word
dream has a connotation of being a desired and good interpretation of something, because it is another
way of saying a belief. It is doubtable that he had a real dream, but he has a belief that the country could
unite. Dream is used because he speaks of the American dream and by using the word dream in his
sentences he asserts his position as an American worthy of the same treatment as majority of the
country equaling Equality. Equality that he is hoping to have between him and his fellow Americans exist
because he says, I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the
true meaning of its creed which is therefore establishing an America where all are equal By
saying this the people have a rallying cry/ desire to continue on fighting the segregation laws to make it
so that there is a bright future in America. The word dream in this section is used to build Kairos through
the use of relatable subjects to the people and vivid imagery (maybe place imagery here, may need to
reword this in the actual paper) and every hill shall be exulted..par. 25. The device is persuasive
because it persuades the audience to continue to fight for the future due to the speaking of things that
they themselves want or wish to have. The speaking of what they wish to have through the word dream
creates a innocent and pure view to what King is saying This makes the audience feel that they must
continue to fight for their desires because if they do they are protecting their children who are innocent
and have the same desires that king described.
