Grade Level: 4 th Grade
Subject: Science Time Frame: 2-3 weeks Objectives: 1. SWBAT understand the differences between the 8 planets. 2. SWBAT distinguish the different phases of the moon by making their own moon phase book and observing the moon. 3. SWBAT explain why and how the planets orbit the Sun and the specific order the planets are in. 4. Procedures: Week 1: Introduction to Solar System and the Intelligences:
Different Planets Day 1: Reading Solar System Books. As a whole class, the teacher will read The Planets in Our Solar System (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science, Stage 2) by Franklyn M. Branley. After reading the class will go over with the teacher what they just read and listened to and go over what they learned from the book about the solar system. Then students will go to Kidrex.org and search solar system current event articles. Once they have found an article, they will write a brief summary about what they read in a Word Document and turn that in. Day 2: Planet Fact Book. Students will use the computers and go to Planetsforkids.org to research more facts about the planets. Students will then each receive the Planet Fact Book sheets, cut the middle of each page to separate the two different planets and make their own book cover with construction paper. They will then write in facts they have read from their internet search about planets. Make sure they write distances in their fact book as they will need that for projects later. Also make sure they include how many days make up a year for that planet as well. After filled in have students staple book together with cover and they can use through out the solar system unit. Day 3: Human Solar System. As a class, go outside where there is plenty of space to spread out. Assign students to the sun and the 8 different planets. Have them get in order with the sun first and then the 8 different planets behind the sun. Have them spread out and then have the planets orbit the sun as they do in space. Have them spin as the planets do as well. Switch out students so all students get a chance. See if they can put themselves in the correct order as well. Day 4: Solar System Songs. Using the internet with the overhead projector, using Youtube, find the solar system songs and show them to the entire class. After listening to the songs, go over the lyrics line by line and have students start singing along until they start memorizing the song and it helps them remember the order of the planets. After learning the song, have students open AutoRap App on the iPad and have them make their own song using facts they have learned about the planets. Day 5: Solar System model. With Styrofoam balls that closely relate to the size of the planets (small for inner planets, big for outer planets, biggest for sun) and using kabob sticks and a Styrofoam rectangle block for the base, have students in pairs color the Styrofoam balls and block to match the color of the resembling planet, sun, and black for the block resembling space, stick the ball on the kabob stick and place the stick in the block. The sticks with the planets should be in order on the block that the planets are in with the Sun being the first and the biggest

ball. This model should also be scaled to size in distance from each other. So using the distance in their fact book, have 1 inch equal 1 AU.
Week 2: The Moon and Night Sky Day 6: Stargazing Journal. Have students start their stargazing journal. It is a journal they each will get to take home and write in after observing the night sky for 5 minutes a night for two weeks. Make sure to mention things the teacher is looking for. Have them look for really bright stars and discuss if it is a star or a planet. Also have them include the moon and just what it looks like not going into much detail, as more detail will be in their moon phase book later. Day 7: Moon Phase Book & Chart. Handing each student the paper for the Mini Moon Phase Book, have students individually cut out their books and put it in book format and staple it together. Have students search The Moon on planetsforkids.org and fill in the spaces describing the different types of moon phases. Then hand out the moon phase chart to each student and have him or her, while stargazing, fill in what the moon looks like on his or her chart. Day 8: Oreo Cookie Chart. Handing out the moon phase Oreo Cookie Sheet, each student will work alone and get their own sheet. Then hand students 8 Oreo cookies and explain that the side with the filling is the important one and they can eat the side without the filling now if they like. They need to make sure the entire filling is on one side. Then have students trim the filling to match the moon phase. They then place and glue that cookie over the moon phase until all 8 phases have a corresponding cookie. Once complete they make take this home to keep, but make sure they know they cannot eat the cookies as they know have glue on them. Day 9: Excel/Distance Chart. Get students set up on computers and each student will open up Excel on their computers. Then using their fact books, students will make a graph that represents the distances the planets are from the sun and the graph will show how far the planets really are from each other. Then have students make another graph representing how many days to make a year for each planet and this will show which planet has the longest and shortest year. Day 10: Webquest! Students will work in groups of 4 for the webquest but have each student on their own computer just next to each other to work. Have students open up the webquest (or already have the computers set to the webquest) and have them start. This webquest is a mission where they are assigned to a job and explore the

planets as astronauts.
Week 3: Finishing Up/Journals Day 11: Poster Solar System: Pair up students in twos and give each group a black poster board. Also give them Styrofoam balls and have them color them the correct color for each planet. Have the students work together to make rings around the sun and glue the planets in order on their orbit ring around the sun. After the poster has dried, hang up the posters so all students can look at each others work. Day 12: Solar System Word Search. While finishing up, have students take home the solar system word search to complete for homework. Day 13-15: Review as needed and collect to grade journals and moon phase charts and then hand back for students to keep.
