Themat i c Coac h As Thematic Coach, my task was to find a poem that connected to a theme from the novel I read. The theme I chose was breaking out of a predestined life. Task I decided to research this theme because it is present in both novels and is a very prominent theme. What I found in my research is that many poets dont write about breaking away from things, so my research was kind of difficult. This connects to the novel I read ( The Giver ) because the main character Jonas realizes that the life him and the community share is not as it should be, which makes him realize he needs to get away from the community. Connection to Novel The well known poet I decided to use in my research was Robert Frost. And the poem I'm using that he wrote is The Road Not Taken. My Poet This portion of the poem reads,
Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim Because it was grassy and wanted wear,..
The untraveled path represents the nontraditional choice, or not choosing the same thing as everyone else. And this represents Jonas choice to leave the traditional life in the community behind to go and live in Elsewhere, unlike the rest of the community (page168-169) .
yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back.
This Portion of the poem represents Jonas feelings about his decision to escape the community. He knew that if he left, there would be no turning back, and he couldnt return to the life he left behind. ( page 182)
..I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.
This represents Jonas thoughts about his final decision to leave the community. His choice to leave has made all the community will effect the rest of his life, and more likely than not he will be telling people about his life in the community. (Page 183-) The End
