Objective: Students will create a video that displays the main idea of a story. Standards: Reading Comprehension: 1.2.7 Retell the central ideas of simple expository or narrative passages. Technology: 1.a Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes 1.b Create original works as means of personal or group expression 2.a interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media Materials: iPads (class set, or at least enough for one per small group) iMovie App Appropriate level reading materials Overhead projector IEP goal tracking chart Preparations: Teacher must have level appropriate reading materials picked out iPads must be charged iMovie must be installed on all iPads Instructional Directions: Teacher will place students in small groups based on ability levels Teacher will dismiss groups to get their iPads (one per group) Teacher will assign a segment of or short story to each group Students will read and discover the main idea of the story Students will assign roles to the group members Students will create short plays conveying the main idea of the story Students will open the iMovie app on their iPads and record themselves acting out their play Teacher will choose the order in which students will present Each group will present their play to the class by connecting their iPads to the projector Teacher will use a goal tracking chart to record progress on each students ability towards meeting this IEP goal
Reading Comprehension for Naturalist Students Objective: Students will create a mind map that categorizes the main idea and details of a story. Appropriate level reading materials IEP goal tracking chart Preparations: Teacher must have level appropriate reading materials picked out iPads must be charged Kidspiration Maps must be installed on all iPads Instructional Directions: Teacher will dismiss groups to get their iPads (one per student) Teacher will assign a passage for the class to read Students will read and discover the main idea and at least 3 key details of the story Students will open the Kidspiration Maps app on their iPads and choose the appropriate mind map template Students will use the mind map to input the main idea and details into the appropriate sections Students will share their completed mind map with the teacher through the sharing feature in the app Teacher will use a goal tracking chart to record progress on each students ability towards meeting this IEP goal
Reading Comprehension for Musical Students Objective: Students will create a song or rap that displays the main idea of a story. Standards: Reading Comprehension: 1.2.7 Retell the central ideas of simple expository or narrative passages. Technology: 1.a Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes 1.b Create original works as means of personal or group expression 2.a interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media Materials: iPads (class set) Garage Band App by Apple Appropriate level reading materials Overhead Projector IEP goal tracking chart Preparations: Teacher must have level appropriate reading materials picked out iPads must be charged Garage Band app must be installed on all iPads Instructional Directions: Teacher will dismiss groups to get their iPads (one per student) Teacher will assign a segment of or short story to the class Students will read and discover the main idea of the story Students will either work alone or in pairs to create a song or rap that explains the main idea of the story Students will open the Garage Band app on their iPads and record themselves performing their song/rap as well as compose some music to put to it. Students will share this song/rap via the share tool in the app. Each student will then present their song/rap to the class by connecting their iPads to the projector Teacher will use a goal tracking chart to record progress on each students ability towards meeting this IEP goal
