We need only caskets, certainly not ambulances, said Pietro Bartolo, chief of health
services on the island, as corpses were lined up on the islands quayside. Other bodies were

'It wasn't until we passed the body to our colleagues in the boat that they made the
shocking discoveryin her leggings was a newborn baby. None of us could believe it. We
all began to crymy mask was full of tears.' The police marshall said he had never
before lost control in the job. 'But in front of that newborn baby I lost my cool. The baby
may never have seen light only the darkness at the bottom of the sea. It was a horrible
job.'

Often transfer via Libya, due to the countrys physical location in close proximity to Italy and
Europe.
"I had been working in Tripoli for four years, after travelling there overland from
Freetown [Sierra Leone capital]," he told IRIN shortly after arriving on the island. "I had
a wellpaid job, but when the situation broke down in Libya, I started to suffer abuse
because I was African. I started to get tired in my soul. Then I knew I had to leave, and I

They will never be the same again because you just cannot be the same once you leave
behind who and what you are, you just cannot be the same.
Stina also said leaving your country is like dying, and when you come back you are like a
lost ghost returning to earth, roaming around with a missing gaze in your eyes.

Nonetheless, Roberto Maroni, the Italian interior minister, complained bitterly that the EU
had abandoned Italy: I ask myself if it makes sense to continue in this position: of
continuing to be part of the European Union, an institution that is activated immediately to
save banks, to declare warbut when it is a matter of expressing solidarity with a country
