Lesson Title: City Search

Goal: Review the steps in performing an angle bisector and a perpendicular line point through a specific
point constructions.

Use constructions and real world locations to find the orthocenter.

Challenge students to create a triangle through one given center using medians and congruent angles.

Teacher: Ms. Flores
Grade Level: 9th & 10th grade
Subject: Geometry
Time Frame: One class session (40 minutes) plus time outside of class for homework completion.

Objectives Intelligences Materials: Digital and
Non-Digital
Content and Technology
STANDARDS
To help students relate
their knowledge or
exploration of a city to
learn new concepts and
vocabulary. Students will
apply constructions of
perpendicular lines and
angle bisectors to find
the incenter and
orthocenter of a triangle.

Procedure Intelligences
Review:

Review the following key terms with the students: Perpendicular, altitude,
angle bisector, centroid and orthocenter. Have students draw an example on
the whiteboard of each of the terms and explain it to the class.

After reviewing key terms, review the process of finding the following
constructions (drawing perpendicular lines to a point not on the line, bisecting
an angle, creating congruent triangles) by viewing the following videos:

Discuss with students how they could reverse engineer a bisected angle by
drawing to congruent angles. (By using the same base and vertex of one
angle for the second angle)

Part 1

Have students make a list of favorite, fun or interesting places they would like
to visit. It could be in any city as long as they can print out a map of all three
places/cities on one page.

Students will pick three places and locate them on a map site such as
https://maps.google.com/ , http://www.mapquest.com/ , or a maps app on
their phone/device that has printing capabilities.

Students will print out the map and locate the three places. These three
locations will become the vertices of their new triangle. Using the
constructions they just reviewed students will find the altitudes (line that is
perpendicular to the opposite side that passes through the vertex) of the
triangle and locate the orthocenter.

Once they have located the orthocenter on their map they will find this
location on https://maps.google.com/ or app. They may print out a
streetview image or a satellite image of the orthocenter as well as giving its
location. Street address is preferable but students may provide county or city
if location is not on a street. Students may also take a screenshot of the
location and email it to the teacher. However, original constructions map must
be turned in.

Part 2

Students will choose a fourth location to locate on a map. They will print a
map that has enough space for them to use the location as a center of a
triangle.

Students will create a triangle around the center by treating their location as
the incenter of the triangle. Students should work on this as homework, but
may be given the following instructions.

To create the triangle, first draw one line that passes through the point, label
this line A.
Draw a second line that will be a base for your triangle, this line should
intersect with your line but not with your location. Label this Line 1.
Create a congruent angle to the one just formed, label the new line created
Line 2. Both angles should have the same vertex, line A should run down the
middle of Line 1 and Line 2.
Make sure to extend the line 2 so that it can become a second side to your
triangle.
Draw a line from your location that intersects Line 2. label this new line B.
Create a congruent angle to the one just created.
You should have a third line, Line 3.
Connect the points of intersection of Lines 1, 2, and 3 to make your triangle.

Locate on a map app or website the locations of your vertices. Take a
screenshot of the satellite view or street view of each vertices location.

Email the screenshots to the teacher.
