ATOMS AND MOLECULES GLOSSARY

Atoms
Tiny particles that make up all things

Centrifuging
Separation of a solid from a liquid by spinning them rapidly until the solid is stuck to the
bottom

Compound
Combinations of different types of atoms

Decanting
Separation of two immiscible liquids by waiting until they separate and then pouring off
the top layer

Dissolve
To break into component parts when mixed with a solvent

Distillation
Separation of gases by gradually cooling them until one becomes a liquid while the
others remain gaseous

Electron
Small negatively charged particle within atoms

Element
A substance made up of only one type of atom

Emulsion
A mixture of immiscible liquids in which one forms small droplets suspended in the other

Evaporation
Converting a liquid to a gas by heating it

Filtration
Separation of a solid from a liquid by passing it through a mesh or filter paper

Immiscible
Liquids or gases that cannot be mixed and do not spontaneously separate once mixed

Insoluble
Unable to dissolve

Miscible
Liquids or gases that cannot be mixed and do not spontaneously separate once mixed

Molecule
Combinations of two or more atoms

Mixture
Made out of more than one type of molecule

Neutrons
A neutrally charged particle in the nucleus of atoms

Paper Chromatography
Separating dissolved substances based on the rate at which they travel through a piece
of paper

Precipitation
When a dissolved substance becomes insoluble

Protons
A positively charged particle in the nucleus of atoms

Pure Substance
Made out of only one type of molecule
