Chemical Warfare in Syria Causing


Environmental Damage to Nearby Rivers
The Location:
Just outside Damascus, near the border with the Lebanon,
in eastern Syria.

untouched, the dead
animals are
testament to the
destructive nature
of this type of
attack.
Summary:
In the past week, there have been international outcries
concerning the alleged use of chemical weapons against
protesters in Damascus, Syria. hether the allegations
are founded is yet to be proven, although !" #hemical
eapons Inspectors have recently left the country with
samples, and are in the process of e$amining them in %he
"etherlands. %he attacks, regardless of their nature,
have killed, according to official !S government reports,
at least &,'() people.
Geograhical Effects :
%hese attacks, if indeed chemical, will have had drastic
effects on sanitation in the surrounding area. %hese
chemicals could cause long*term unavailability of clean,
safe drinking water, which if drunk could cause many more
deaths from poisoning than those caused directly by the
attacks. %he problems could spread further afield to
other parts of Syria if the contaminated water flows
through nearby rivers into other areas.
