On Monday we joined with our buddies from ayu!a "ei!hts #chool and
$isited Woods %arth &arm' (lthou!h the weather was not !reat) the
acti$ities at the farm enabled us all to ha$e a terrific mornin!* We be!an by
breakin! into small !rou+s and bein! assi!ned a cro+ to har$est' (fter
har$estin!) each child counted their +roduce and filled out a farm re+ort on
how much was +icked' We then washed our +roduce and recounted for
accuracy for the farm records' Our har$est would be deli$ered that day to
,'J'M' school for their healthy snack +ro!ram' With the e-tra +roduce we
+re+ared a lar!e salad dressin!' #e$eral children then took +art in a cookin!
demonstration where they made homemade salad dressin! for the salad'
.he salad was enjoyed by all) e$en a few students who stated they do not
like salad* /+on returnin! to #outh "ill) we all ate lunch to!ether and then
assembled on the +lay!round where our first !raders !a$e a !arden tour to
their buddies' We finished off the afternoon by sharin! our !arden journals
with one another' .he children !ot to see the farm to school connection' 0t
was a !reat day*
%ach child +icked out their three fa$orite +oems of the year and was then
assi!ned one +oem that we be!an to memori1e this week' omin! home this
weekend in back+acks 2no weekend folder3 is the +oem that your child will
recite at our 4oetry 5unch on &riday) June 67

' Many of the children need
to +ractice their +oem se$eral times a day so they will know it by &riday'
We are also +racticin! se$eral times a day each day in school' 0f your child
does not yet know the words) be!in by learnin! just the first two lines' (s
they become confident) add a line' (fter the words are memori1ed) we are
workin! on fluency and $oice +rojection' ,e sure to join us on &riday) June

.his week we be!an to learn about fractions' %ach child made a fraction kit
consistin! of one whole circle) hal$es) thirds) fourths) fifths and si-ths' We
s+ent se$eral math times findin! s+ecific fractions' We also com+ared
fractions by findin! the correct +ieces and lookin! at their si1e' .his was an
introduction to fractions; this study will continue in second !rade'
.he tri$ets made for the .aste of the Nation e$ent are now in the
classroom' We are workin! on finishin! them for .uesdays e$ent' 0f you
are interested in buyin! a tri$et we will be brin!in! back any tri$ets not sold'

newsletter' 0 want to thank those +arents who $olunteered in the classroom'
9our time in the room certainly hel+ed to enrich the educational e-+erience
for al of our students' 0 am fully aware that not e$eryone could +artici+ate
in the classroom) but that does not mean you did were not in$ol$ed* 9ou
came to urriculum Ni!ht) on a filed tri+) and ho+efully to our 4oetry 5unch'
0 shared your childs +ro!ress at a conference) we talked on the +hone' 9ou
contacted me throu!h notes with =uestions) concerns and feedback' 9ou
read my newsletters' 9ou listened to your child read each week and
deli!hted in their weekly +oems' 9ou sent in snack and ta+e) tissues and
markers and s+ecial birthday foods' 9ou sent in somethin! which was s+ecial
in some way or related to what we were studyin!' Most im+ortantly) you sent
me your child' 0 celebrate you for all you did to +ut your childs education as
a +riority' .hanks you for workin! in +artnershi+ with me'
0t has been rewardin! for me to watch the class come to!ether as a
community' 0 look forward to seein! your children ne-t year and hearin!
!reat thin!s about them' 0 ho+e that you ha$e a rela-in! and fun filled
summer' 4lease be sure to continue readin! with your child on a daily basis'
Writin! often is also so im+ortant' (ll you need to do is +ro$ide a =uiet
+lace) +a+er and +encil' 0f 0 ha$e done my job) they will be able to take it
from there* 0 ho+e that 0 ha$e instilled in all of your children a lo$e of
readin! and writin!' 0 ho+e that 0 ha$e tau!ht them to li$e a more >wide
awake? life where e$eryday e$ents and obser$ations can be turned in to small
moment stories) +oems and information books'
