***Warning includes: Reference to Social Contract and classroom rules

The second set of rules and consequences for the classroom will be established by the
students will the assistance of the teacher. It will be explained that the rules and consequences
set by the teacher will still be implemented but the Social Contract is for students to help create
an environment for them to be able to succeed. As a class we will discuss why rules are
needed, how each rule can help students succeed, and what the expectations are for the class.
The purpose of the Social Contract is to give the students the opportunity to take responsibility
for their actions.
The day before the Social Contract is created students will be given a homework
assignment. Each student will have to come up with three rules and consequences for the
classroom. Students will be encouraged to think about how they would like their learning
environment to look like. How they would like to be treated by the teacher, how they would by
other students, how they think the teacher and other students would like to be treated.
The day that the Social Contract will be created one volunteer can write out the Social
Contract on a big piece of cardboard paper. To begin the students will come up with a title or
nickname for the Social Contract. It can relate to history or not but it should be creative and a
secret handshake will be encouraged. Then each student will share the rules and consequences
with the class, which the volunteer will write on the board. As students share their rules and
consequences some may be the same or similar so a check will go by each rule and
consequence that is already on the board.
Then as a class, we will decide on five rules and consequences. The volunteer will write
the class nickname and the rules and consequences on the big piece of cardboard paper. Next
student will give adjectives describing the rules which will be written on the paper. Finally, all
of the students and the teacher will sign their name on the paper. The students and the
teacher will be held responsible concerning the Social Contract and should be referred to when
negative behavior occurs.

***Schoolwide and district rules will be followed in this classroom.
