Hayes and Harlington Horticultural and Handicraft Show

The horticultural and handicraft show is open to everyone to enter home grown fruit,
vegetables, pot plants, flowers, handicrafts, jams and cakes.
Children and schools are very welcome to enter produce or handicrafts. Children are
asked to submit their entries on a separate entry sheet to their parents and state their
age.

The cost is 25p per exhibit entered in to the show.

Exhibits must be entered by 11am on the day of the show before the judging begins.
The show schedule is available from libraries, community centres or through the office of
John McDonnell MP. It can also be found through our website www.barrahallpark.com
This is a fun event, open to the whole community so put your best produce forward for
judging.

Exhibitors Rules

The rules that apply are in accordance with the Hayes and Harlington Horticultural and
Handicraft Show Society, but with an amendment to Rule 2 which for this year is as
follows:
All entries must be submitted in writing together with entrance fees, no later than
11:00am on the day of the show.

Entry Fees

All participants will be required to pay 25p per exhibit entered in to the show.
All exhibitors should use the entry forms included in the schedule. Children are asked to
submit their entries on a form separate from that of a parent, and should state their age
in years and months







The Schedule

Roses and other flowers (Exhibitors to provide their own vases)

1. Rose, large flowered, one specimen bloom.
2. Roses, large flowered, two specimen blooms, one vase.
3. Roses, cluster flowered, one stem.
4. Roses, cluster flowered, one bowl any cultivars, no more than nine stems.
5. Chrysanthemums, any cultivar, three blooms, one vase.
6. Dahlias, any cultivar, three blooms, one vase.
7. Collection of flowers, three vases, three distinct kinds, five stems of each kind.
8. Annuals, one vase, no fewer than two kinds.
9. A vase of everlasting flowers, no more than three kinds.
10. Ornamental grasses, one vase.
11. Marigolds, one vase, five blooms.
12. Asters, one vase, five stems.
13. Annuals, one vase, five blooms, any cultivar of one kind excluding marigolds and
asters.
14. Gladiolus, one specimen spike.
15. Vase of mixed flower, any foliage allowed, arranged for frontal effect.
16. Herbaceous perennials, one vase, not exceeding three kinds, excluding disbudded
chrysanthemums and dahlias.
17. Flowering, fruiting or berried trees and/or shrubs, sprays in bowl or vase.
Pot Plants (Normally one plant per pot unless otherwise stated. Maximum pot size no
greater than 6)

18. One Coleus.
19. One flowering plant.
20. Three flowering plants.
21. One non-flowering begonia.
22. One begonia, flowering.
23. African violet.
24. One foliage plant not including coleus and begonia.
25. Three foliage plants.
26. One cactus or succulent plant.
27. One fuchsia.
28. Fuchsias, three pots any cultivar.



Vegetables
29. Largest vegetable, one specimen, any kind judged primarily for size.
30. Onions, five winter grown.
31. Onions, five, grown from sets.
32. Onions, five (weight not exceeding 8oz/227g each).
33. Shallots, twelve exhibition.
34. Shallots, twelve pickling (size not to exceed 25mm diameter).
35. Beet, three globe, tied, foliage trimmed to 100mm, any one cultivar.
36. Carrots, five, foliage trimmed to 100mm, any one cultivar.
37. Potatoes, four, white, any one cultivar.
38. Potatoes, four, coloured, any one cultivar.
39. Courgettes, six, not to exceed 150mm in length.
40. Runner beans, nine pods.
41. Marrows, one paid, not to exceed 380mm in length.
42. Cabbage, one pair, with roots washed and trimmed, any cultivar.
43. Tomatoes, five, outdoor grown, any cultivar, with stalks.
44. Tomatoes, five, indoor grown, any cultivar, with stalks.
45. Miniature tomatoes, one truss (e.g. Tiny Tim, sweet 100).
46. Truss of unripe, or ripening tomatoes, judged primarily for weight.
47. Turnips, three, stems trimmed to 8cm and tied.
48. Leeks, three stems.
49. Parsnips, three foliage trimmed to 75mm, any one cultivar.
50. Sweetcorn, three cobs.
51. Beans, Dwarf French, nine pods.
52. Any other vegetable, kind of cultivar, not included in the above classes.
53. Collection of vegetables (space 75cm), four kinds, quantity to be the same as in single
classes.
Fruit

54. Collection of fruit, three kinds.
55. Apples, five culinary, with stalks.
56. Apples, five dessert, with stalks.
57. Pears, five desserts, with stalks.
58. Plumes, nine, any one cultivar, with stalks.
One dish, or plate of soft fruit, not included in the above classes, excluding gourds




Childrens Open Class

Under 10 years of age

59. An animal made from fruit or vegetables.
60. Largest sunflower head. (Measured across diameter)
61. Longest sunflower stem (Bent, but not snapped. Stems will be accepted.)
62. A sample calligraphy (Size not to exceed 30 x 21cm)
63. A posy of autumn flowers.

Over 10 years and under 16 years (Age to be stated)

64. Autumn gleanings A collection of berries, driftwood, leaves, grasses (not flowers)
arranged on a circular plate or card. Not to exceed 31cm in diameter. Materials may
be fixed with glue, staples etc. or simply laid loose on the base.
65. Any item of embroidery or tapestry.
66. Four rock cakes.
67. Eight cheese straws.
68. Four butterfly cakes.
69. A soft toy or doll (May be made from a kit).
70. A painting or drawing, A4 size
71. A pot plant, grown from seed.
72. A piece of homemade jewellery.


School Open Class

Schools are welcome to enter exhibits from any of the categories listed in the schedule.

Domestic Classes

73. A jar of soft fruit or toned fruit jam (made current year).
74. A jar of marmalade.
75. Six apple pies Short pastry.
76. Four bread rolls your own choice of shape and type.
77. Victoria Sandwich to following recipe:

Ingredients:
100g (4oz) butter, softened 100g (4oz) caster sugar
100g (4oz) self-raising flower 45ml (3 tbsp.) jam
2 eggs Icing sugar, sifted optional
Prepare two 18cm (7in) sandwich tins. Grease tins with a round greaseproof paper and
then grease paper. Cream butter and sugar together until very pale in colour, light in
texture and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time, adding 15ml (1tbsp.) flour with each one.
Gently fold in the remaining flour with a metal spoon. Transfer to prepared tins and
smooth tops with a knife. Bake at 180 degree centigrade (350 degree Fahrenheit) Mark 4
for 20-30 minutes, or until well risen, golden brown and firm.
Leave in tins for 2-3 minutes. Turn out on to a wire cooling rack.
Strip off paper and leave until cold. When cold, sandwich together with jam.
Dust cake with icing sugar.

Handicraft
78. Any hand knitted article (or set)
