Reflection

The artifact I chose was a technology workshop I developed for ITEC 7410 Instructional
Technology Leadership. I implemented a professional learning opportunity for the third grade
team members concerning ways to integrate technology with the Common Core Math
Standards. I presented some Web 2.0 tools to integrate technology in their math lessons to
support mastery. The objective was to provide them the tools to promote best practices in
teaching, learning, and assessment for the domains Operations and Algebraic Thinking,
Number and Operations with Fractions, and Measurement and Data. I presented software that
was available from the county as well as Smart Board lessons I previewed from Smart Exchange.
Also, I offered them online components for reinforcement. After the presentation, I
administered a survey to determine what further collaboration was needed. This survey models
an essential principle of adult learning which promotes ongoing support.
I developed and implemented this technology workshop to encourage my team to
integrate technology more in their math lessons. I provided lessons that were aligned to state
and national professional learning standards. The lessons can be implemented as work
stations or online components during the workshop model. Other lessons can be utilized to
support face to face instruction such as in small group guided lessons or as whole group mini
lessons. Many of the lessons I provided enabled the students to demonstrate understanding of the
standard by actively constructing a project using online components such as Power point,
Kidspiration, and online manipulatives. They focus less on the teacher educating the students and
more on an active process of creation (Creighton, 2003).
I felt this was a valuable assignment since I would like to eventually become a coach and
this provided me practice with creating a professional learning experience that models the
principles of adult learning. Also, it takes the entire staff working together to promote student
achievement; therefore it is important that we all work together promoting best practices in
teacher, learning, and assessment. In other words, teachers need to share what lessons and
ideas produce student success. This particular professional development should be broken up
into more than one session if I ever plan to redeliver. It was a bit overwhelming and I do not feel
the ideas would be implemented by the teachers unless they have ample practice and support.
