I.Background
Whoarethelearners?

Thelearnersarestudentsfrom6thform.

Whatisthesetting?Besuretomentiontechnology.

TheprojectwilltakeplaceatLaSalleFloridaSchool.Thesestudentsarearound11or12yearsold.
Mostofthembelongtomediaorupperclasses.Inthegroupthereare15studentswhichhelpstothe
learningprocesssincemostofthestudentsareabletoexpressthemselvesandtheirworksinthe
classroomveryoften.
Theschoolisquiteoldandourclassroomisnotmodernatall.Intheclassroomthereareseveraldesks
wherestudentssitinpairsandonedeskfortheteacher.Thedesksarefacingtheboard.Iusechalk.
Thenthereareseveralwindowswhichmaketheclassroomwonderfullylightandairy.Thatsallyoucan
seeintheclassroom.
Therearenottechnologicaldevicesintheclassroom.Besides,studentsfromprimaryschoolarenot
allowedtohavecellphonesatschool.
IusetheCDplayertoworkonlisteningsalmosteveryday.Acoupleofdaysago,Iwasinformedthat
thereisanewnotebookandaprojectoravailableforus.Thenthereisacomputerroomwhichisreally
uselesssincetherearesecondarystudentsworkingthere.
Outsideschool,mostofthestudentshaveaccesstotechnologyallthetime.Theyhavecellphones,
tablets,iphonesandnotebooks.TheyallhaveaccesstotheInternet.

Ithinkthatintegratingtechnologyinourclassroomwillmakethelessonsmoreattractive,more
enjoyableandmorerelatedtotheirreality.Althoughmostofthemexpressthattheyusetechnologyfor
playinggames,Ithinkitllbeagreattooltoshowthemthatwecanalsolearnwithit.

Whatarethecoursegoals?WhyarethestudentsstudyingEnglish?

Thecoursegoalisbasedonacommunicativeapproach.Wedousecoursebooks(WorldQuests2)
buttheideaistousethemastriggerstoworkoncommunication.Trytoprovidethemwithtoolssothat
theycanexpressthemselvesinEnglish.HalfofthestudentsusuallytraveltotheUSAanditseasyfor
themtoseehowusefulitcanbetolearnthelanguagesinceaftereachtriptheycomebackveryexcited
expressinghowwelltheycouldcommunicate.

II.Issueorproblemtobeaddressedthattechnologycanhelpwith.Whatswrong?

OneoftheissuesI'vebeenthinkingaboutisrelatedtotheshortstorieswehavetoreadduringtheyear.
Thisyearstudentshavetoreadabookcalled'FootprintsintheForest.'Thestoryisnotsogreatbut
therearedifferenttopicswhichweareaskedtoconcentrateon.Afterreadingthebookanddoing
differentexercises,theideaisthatstudentshavetoprepareaprojectonthemostrelevantissues.
Normallywejustworkwithpapercoloursandpicturesanddescriptionsandwepasteallthatinthe
classroomandinthemainhall.Iwasthinkingthatthishasbecomequiteboringandusualforthekids.
Studentsdonotseemtobemotivatedwhenpreparingtheprojects.Sothisyearthatpresentationwill
betheresultofintegratingnewtechnologicaltools.Thebookisrelatedtodinosaursextinctiontheories,
animalsdyingout,destructionofforestsandjunglesanddeforestation.

III.Specifictechnologysolution

Idliketoconcentrateonworkingwithmystudentsaboutthosetopicsrelatedtothestorytheyare
reading.Theyhavetoprepareapresentationaboutdeforestation,destructionofjungleandtheimpact
thishasontheanimalsandplantsandondinosaursextinctiontheories.
Firsttheclasswillbedividedinfourgroupsoffourstudents.Thenaspecifictopicwillbeassignedto
eachgroup.Thenwellgotothecomputerclassroomandbeforestartingtowork,Iwillexplainthem
thattheywillhavetoprepareaPowerPointpresentationdescribingthatspecificissueandthatthefinal
projectwillbeshowntotheothergroups.Iwilltellthemthatwewilltrytoincludedifferent
technologicaltoolstothepresentation.Iwillexplainthattheywillbeabletocreatemindmaps(using
murallyorpadlet).Thenthattheycanuseaudiobooorvocarootorecordanintervieworsomepiece
ofinformationtheywanttoaddtotheirpresentation.Theywillalsousefotobabbletodescribeimages.
Oncetheyhavedescribedtheirtopic,addexamplesandmanifesttheiropinionsinthePowerPoint
presentation,theprojectwillbeshownamongthem.

Themaingoalfortheuseoftechnologywillbetocreateandtodosomethinginnovativeforthese
students.Theywillbeabletousethelanguageandthetopicsinadifferentwayandnotasusualon
colourpaperwhichthenmostofthestudentsdonotstoptotakealookatit.BycreatingaPowerPoint
Presentationandbyusingdifferenttechnologicaltools,studentswillhavethepossibilitytodosomething
different,newandinteresting.Whatsmore,theywillhavethepossibilitytoshowtheirpresentationsto
theirclassmatesandtothestudentsbelongingtoanother6thformdivision.

Mostofthistechnologyisquitenewforme.IhaveonlyusedPowerPointfewtimes.Nowtheideais
notonlytocreateaPowerPointPresentationbutalsotoincludedifferenttotools.Ihavelearntabout
thosetoolsthisyearinTallerdeTcnicasInformticasAplicadasalaEnseanzadelaLengua
Extranjera.

Thiswillbeawholenewexperience,notonlyformystudentsbecauseofwhatImentionedbeforebut
alsobecauseIhaveneverincorporatedtechnologyintotheclassroominthisway.Itwillbechallenging
formetoorganizeandplaneachlessonandthentotrytoexplaintothemandhelpthemmakethebest
ofit.

IV.FinalProduct

StudentswillfinallydeliveraPowerPointPresentationincludingadescriptionofthetopictheywere
askedforandincludingexamples,imagesandopinionsrelatingtothetopic.

TheProjectwilltakeapproximately4lessonoftwoperiodseach.Firsttheteacherwillintroducethe
projectandexplaintothestudentsthefinalproject.Thenthegroupswillbeformedandeachonewill
concentrateonaspecifictopic.Teacherandstudentswillgototheschoollibrarytolookforthe
information.Theywillbeabletolookforthisindifferentbooks,tophotocopysomeimagesandtosurf
intheinternet.Studentswilldesigntheirfirstdraftofwhattheywillliketoincludeintheirpowerpoint
presentation.Teacherwillguidestudentsinordertohelpthemdesignthepresentation.Thefollowing
lessonTeacherwillexplainthedifferenttechnologicaltoolstheywillbeabletouseinordertoincludein
theirpresentations.Thentheywilldecidewhatimagestheywilldescribe,whatinformationtheywill
recordorwhatmindmaptheywillcreate.Teacherwillsharewiththemgoogleslidessothattheywill
startworkingontheirpresentation.Thiswilltakethreeorfourlessons.Finallyafterhavingteacher
feedbackandaftertheyhaveincludedwhattheywanttoinclude,theirpresentationswillbedownloaded
bytheteacherinapendriveandthepresentationswillbeshowninclassthroughtheprojector.Thenthe
teacherwillsharethoseprojectswiththerestofthecourses.
