Period of Development Fact Sheets

Prenatal

Physical development- Prenatal care is the health care you get while you are pregnant. It includes
your check up during the hold 40 weeks of your prenatal care.
Language development- prenatal language learning is an important aspect of human development.
During the third trimester of gestation, a baby in the womb can hear the mother's voice clearly,
and makes use of this ability by learning the rhythms, tones, and sequences of whatever languages
the mother is using during her time of carrying her baby.
Cognitive development- Cognitive development is a field of study in neuroscience and psychology
focusing on a child's development in terms of information processing, during the different stages
of the main three stage of process within the first two weeks after conception, which is called the

One sign that may signal an atypical development during a pregnancy is drug abuse it can have a
significant effect on the developing fetus.
The mother should promote healthy nutrition during her pregnancy which will improved the
nutrition for the unborn baby as well as her own health, this is a good strategy for both mother and
child.

Infancy and Toddlerhood Fact sheet


Physical development- The physical development of a child refers to the change in attributes such as height and
weight, as well as the change in ability to do such activities as crawling, walking and running.
Language development- Babies begin learning language from the moment they are born, they learn from the
sound around them, they from what they hear. Language development is typically comprised of several factors,
including being able to talk, being able to be understood and understanding what parents and other children are

Cognitive development- is the inner processes and products of the mind that leads to knowing it includes all
the mental activity, attending, remember, symbolizing, categorizing, planning, reasoning, and problem solving.

The two typically milestone cognitive development for this age group would be how the child will undergo a
transformation course from birth to maturity, during each development stage the child will think more or less.
The one sign that will signal an atypical development during this period could result from a communication
disorders tend to occur in two major areas: language production and speech patterns.
The one strategy that families could learn that would influence their children learning and development during
this period would be to promote the child language skills, get them involve in a speech group that will help the
development learning needs.

Middle Childhood Fact Sheet

Physical development- Middle Childhood is a developmental stage that occurs between the ages of five and ten
years old. During this time, children are attending school and are becoming more active. They have learned the
basics needs of learning as well as how to interact with their peer.
Language development- At this stage of development children are speaking very well, they are communicating
with the world around them using many different words. Parents often don't think about the mechanics of their
child's speech unless there are specific problems that need to be addressed in therapy. www.ehow.com
Cognitive development- During this period of intellectual development, kids become increasingly skilled at
understanding logical and concrete information. However, they still struggle to grasp hypothetical or abstract
concepts. They are able to understand different situation and problem solve for themselves.
The one sign that will signal an atypical development during this age group would be their social/ emotional
well-being, parents will need to promote a healthy relationship with their children.
The number one strategy that parents should promote is staying involve in their childs life, having a
relationship with them.

Early Childhood Fact sheet

Physical development- The early stages of physical development are crucial to initiating positive mental and
physical skills. As a child's understanding of his environment grows his ability to function within that
environment will also increase. The more they see and hear the more they will learn. Children learn from their
environment.
Language development- from the time the child comes into this world they are learning to communicate with
their parents and this world around them. . The first five years of life are considered to be the most important
time for children to develop language skills. They are hearing and learning.
Cognitive development- is the development of a childs mental state, a time of remarkable mental development.
Cognitive abilities associated with memory, reasoning, problem-solving and thinking continue to emerge
throughout childhood.
The one sign that may signal an atypical development would be when the child shows signs of not being able to
problem solve and lack of reasoning.
The one strategy that families could use should be communication and planning out some new tools academic,
social or behavioral one of the most important things you can do is to form a strong working alliance with
your childs teacher.

Adolescence Fact sheet

Physical development- during this stage the growth and the bodies of the child has change very much, this
rapid physical development begins during the prior developmental stage called Puberty and continues during
adolescence.
Language development- by the time the child reach this stage of development they are able to speak many
words, as well as know how to interact with others. But the majority of language development occurs in the
critical infant through preschool years, development continues into the adolescent years.
Cognitive development- During the middle school, high school and early college years, individuals develop
from children to young adults. Their bodies mature sexually and their minds acquire the ability to engage in

One sign that may signal an atypical development during this age group would be social / depression many
teenage children will experience this development stage.
One strategy that families could use should be communication, as well as group therapy many teenage can
interact with peer of their age, as well as other adults outside of their parents.
