1. Consider double pipe Benzene-Toluene exchanger. It is desired to heat 9820 lb/hr of
cold Benzene from 80 to 120

using hot Toluene which is cooled from 160 to

F. The specific gravities at 68

F are 0.88 and 0.87, respectively. A fouling factor
of 0.001 should be provided for each stream, and the allowable pressure drop on
each stream is 10.0psi. A number of 20ft. hairpins of 2-by 11/4 in.lps pipe are
available. How many hairpins are required?
2. Describe briefly natural and forced circulation evaporators.
3. Discuss the salient features and importance of multiple effect evaporation.
4. Discuss in brief about sieve tray and valve tray. Explain their design.
5. Describe the below parameters and their effect on the height of the theoretical plate
(HETP) of a packed distillation column:
a) Type and size of the packing b) pressure drop
c) Column diameter d) degree of wetting

6.a) Explain the general allowed/range of the thickness of various components of a heat
exchanger.
b) Discuss the effect of the thickness on heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop. If
the thickness is not in the allowable range (below or above the limits), also discuss
economical features.

7. What is meant by scale-up of an equipment? Discuss the basic principles of scale-up
involved in heat exchangers.

8. Explain the following:
