My Reading Level Targets
Level R

General Book Targets
I can read long stretches of text that describe the characters or setting
I can read long strings of dialogue where the speaker is unassigned and I can
infer the story action from the dialogue
I can make inferences about subplots

Targets about the Setting
I can read books in which I need to have content knowledge of the setting

Targets about Summarizing
I can identify important ideas in a text and report them in an organized way
I can remember a story problem or plot, as well as important information over
a longer text and construct meaning
I can independently summarize a book*

Targets about Predicting
I can change my predictions as new information is gathered in a text

Targets about Making Connections
I can make connections to characters with different cultures, distant places,
and different times

Targets about Synthesizing
I can incorporate new knowledge when reading to better understand
characters and plots from previously read chapters or books

Targets about Theme
I can remember information (in an internal or written summary) over several
chapters in a book to help me understand the theme of the book

Targets about Inferring and Understanding Characters
I can make connections between characters in different texts (similar
setting, type of problem, type of person)
I can make inferences about multiple characters
I can state the explicit and obvious reasons a character changes over a book
I can follow multiple characters by what they say, think and do and by what
others say about them

Targets about Analyzing a Book
I can read and understand words with connotative meanings
I can speculate on alternative meanings that the text may have
I can recognize irony and understand how it adds to the quality of the text

Targets about Critiquing a Book
I can talk about the writers craft (style, language, perspective, themes) after
reading several pieces by the same author
I can express my personal tastes in reading and support my choices with
specific descriptions of text features (plot, use of language, kinds of
characters, genre)

Informational Text Targets
I can read books that have complex ideas and on many different topics
I can refer to details and examples in a book when explaining what the text
says*
I can determine the main ideas and explain how the key details support the
main idea*
I can describe the structure of a book (compare/contrast, cause and effect,
problem/solution)*
I can interpret information presented visually (graphs, charts, diagrams,
timelines, etc)*
I can explain how an author used reasons and evidence to support particular
points*
