BLIND GUARDIAN is definitely one of the most
easily recognized Heavy Metal hands. Besides the
indisputably unique sound and fantasy-inspired
lyrics, the German quartet was one of the very
first to introduce epic, symphonic arrangements,
and the thousand-voice chorals into Heavy Metal.
With albums like “Imaginations from the Other
Side,” “Nightfall in Middle-Earth” and the latest
one, “A Night at the Opera” Blind Guardian has
pretty much shown the way to such bands as.
Rhapsody, Edguy, Persuader, and dozens of
other Power Metal acts.
With the new single “Fly” out now and the as-yet-
untitled new album in the making, we contacted
Marcus Siepen, the guitarist of the band, who
kindly agreed to answer some of our (and your)
questions,
So, Marcus, what's the latest news from Blind
Guardian?
Well, we just released the new single, “Fly,” and night
now we're trying to finish the new alum. Hansi
[Kurseh; vocals] is finishing his last vocal recordings
and then welll start mixing. Which of course will take
some time, but we're almost done. It was quite a long
productian again,
How many vocal lines is Hansi gonna have there?
(laughs) Not as many as last time. The album is very
different compared to “A Night at the Opera,"
because there is no vocal layer overkill and there's
not too many orchestrations. Compared to the last
one it's much more basic and straight. What we did
on the last one, especially with “And Then There
Was Silence” (the 14-minute epic); we couldn't top
this. | mean it wouldn't make sense te have even
more vorals and choirs and guitars. VWe've reached
the limit with that song. And since we don't want to
repeat ourselves anyway, we just decided to go for
something completely different. The result is the new
album, whieh as | said is a much more basic and
straight Metal record. There are all the Blind
Guardian elements of course, but itis different
What is it gonna be called?
We don't know yet. There was one title, “Twist in the
Mist,” going around the intemet, but its not going to
be the title. We will decide on the title sometime
during the mix
So is it going to be a step towards the old-school
Blind Guardian?
Yes and no. There are elements of the old-school
Blind Guardian, there are elements of the newer
Blind Guardian and there are completely new
‘elements. In my opinion i's the best thing we could
do. It would be wrong to say it's a step back to
Imaginations" or “Somewhere Far Beyond’ albums,
because we already did that and we don't want t
repeat ourselves.
Blind Guardian went quite a way from “Tales
from the Twilight World” and “Somewhere Far
Beyond” to the epic “Nightfall in Middle-Earth”
and opera-style “A Night at the Opera." How did
this change come about?
it's not like we were sitiing there and planning
something like this. it was a natural development,
When we started, the stuff we did on “Battalions of
Fear" and “Follow the Blind" was the thing we could
do as niusicians and songwriters. it reflected our
influences and the spirit of that time, and all this has
changed over the years, We tried not to repeat
‘ourselves and look for the new things that we can
involve in ur sound, and take our sound fo the new
level
