BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
Students will demonstrate a clear understanding by distinguishing food and water from other things.
This lesson serves as a basic for learning about flow of matter and energy.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
Introduction:
o Begin with a class discussion about foods and drinks. A good way to review this is to ask
questions about what the students like to eat.
o Ask students about what they ate in the morning.
o Ask students to identify foods and drinks from the images shown on the board/projector

Procedures:

Prior to the handout activity (15 minutes)

Teacher Procedure:
After the introduction, students will be shown images on the board and the students will be
encouraged to answer what they see on the board. Questions will be asked about what they ate in the
breakfast, what are their favorite food and drinks, why should we drink water? Why should we eat
food?

Student Procedure:
The students will demonstrate a clear understanding of the lesson by answering the questions
and distinguishing food and drinks from non-edible objects.

Handout activity (15 minutes)
Teacher Procedure:
The teacher will distribute the handouts and ask the students to circle all the edible objects.

Student Procedure:
Students will demonstrate clear understanding by circling the edible objects only.

At the computer (10 minutes)
Teachers Procedure:

The teacher will explain why we need to have food and water on time and that lack of either
water or food will result in fatigue and dehydration. In this activity students are asked to feed
a little boy and see what happens when he does not eat proper food and water.

Student procedure:
Students will show clear understanding that proper meal keeps everyone healthy, by engaging in the
activity.

Closure: (5 minutes) Ask students to share their thoughts ideas and discuss what happened to the little
boy when he was not eating proper food and not drinking water.
