Proposal to pilot a K-6 Literacy Assistance model for teachers and teacher candidates at Stevens

Elementary
*As we pilot this during the fall of the 2014-2015 school year. **9/16 or 9/25 TBD

What we can do for Stevens:
- Assist with administering and/or analyzing Literacy assessments in K-6 including:
WAKIDS, KOLLA, DRA, Miscue analysis, baseline writing, published writing
(personal narrative, literary essay, realistic fiction, expository, persuasive), Springboard
and assessments for the newly adopted Journeys ELA curriculum and CCSS.
- Increase student achievement, focusing on closing the achievement gap for students
below standard.
- Design, partner, and model use of current research based literacy best practices and
technology in designing and providing instruction and monitoring student achievement.
- Work with individual students, pairs, or small groups of students to increase
achievement.
- Work with 4-6 classroom teachers (K, 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 bands)*
- We will provide all consumable and non-consumable materials.
What we hope to obtain from the partnership:
- Hands on practice administering assessments (modeled, guided, and independently), and
analyzing assessments (Gradual Release of Responsibility approach).
- Knowledge of how to design and deliver instruction to increase student achievement for
those students below grade level.
- Practice working with individual students, pairs of students, and small groups of students
for literacy intervention.
- Knowledge of how a building uses data to drive instruction and support.
- Prepare pre-service teachers to effectively work with students who are below standard.
- The physical classroom space and access to teachers and students on Thursdays from 8-
3:30 September-December, 2014.
Who:
- Stevens: Administration, Literacy coaches, possibly RR and/or reading interventionists,
your choice of 4-6 classroom teachers/classrooms* in K-6 (1 teacher in K, 1-2, 3-4, 5-6).
- Whitworth: Literacy instructor, 21 Elementary MIT candidates
Timeline:
- May, 2014 meet with Heather Richardson, principal of Stevens Elementary
- June, 2014 Heather will choose 4-6 classroom teachers to participate & secure space
- June/September administer a brief survey to participating teachers (schedule, assistance)
- Beginning Thursday, September 25, 2014** and continuing every Thursday through
December 4, meet at Stevens to receive instruction, and work with students and adults.
