Lubricating oil

1. With reference to the cylinder lubrication of a large slow speed engine:

A. Explain how regular analysis of scavenge drain oil can be used to
optimise cylinder oil feed rate consumption without unduly affecting the
cylinder liner wear.
B. Describe how you, as Chief Engineer would assess liner wear and
decide when renewal is necessary;

2. It is important to maintain the quality of lubricating oils in main and auxiliary

diesel engines. As a Chief engineer make a detailed instruction for your staff
for maintenance of lubricating oil for main and auxiliary engines.

3. With reference to cylinder lubrication:

(a) state with reasons four desirable properties of a cylinder lubricant;
(b) explain how the correct grade of lubricant for a particular engine may be
determined;
(c) explain how the effectiveness of cylinder lubrication may be assessed;

(d) explain how piston rings assist in promoting effective cylinder lubrication.

4. As a Chief engineer of a vessel with medium speed propulsion engine,

you have received oil analysis report which indicates

a. Increase in Viscosity
b. Drop in Alkalinity
c. Increase in Insolubles
d. Water Contamination.

Discuss the cause, effects, preventive and corrective measures for each of
above deficiency, you will implement with the assistance of your staff.

5. With reference to the on board testing of trunk piston engine crankcase

lubricating oil:
a. outline four tests which could be carried out;

b. state, with reasons, the action to be taken if test results differ

appreciably from previous values

6. AS a Chief engineer of a container vessel on a busy schedule, justify the need for
regular "Spectrographic Analysis" analysis of lubricating oil discussing the
significance of such analysis in the maintenance of engines and system oil.
