Stage 3 Learning Plan Directly Aligned to Content Standard AND Assessments

Learning Activities:
Pre-Test 20 minutes (Great Depression, Stock Market Crash, Segregation in America,
Static vs. Dynamic characters and annotation) Curiosity, Connection
Pre-reading activities exploring the topics of racism/stereotypes and the United States
during this time period. 2 class periods of 50 minutes each Discuss. Curiosity,
Connection, Concentration
Mini-Lesson Annotation 50 minutes: Explore the Dust Bowl, Great Depression and The
Civil Rights Movement. Read articles and annotate as a class. Curiosity,
Concentration, Context
Unit Plan Learning Targets 10 minutes: Self-assessment before, during, and after.
Students will create self-learning targets in their personal journals. Connection
Read and discuss chapters in class. 25 minutes (average) Annotate together and identify
historical allusions. Connection, Coherence, Coaching
Students respond to comprehension/critical thinking questions from the novel and
provide textual evidence to support their ideas. Homework: Done outside of class with
their novels Curiosity, Connection, Concentration, context
At the end of each class, the teacher will do the five-finger test with the students to get an
idea of where they are in the understanding of the text and discussion. 3 minutes The
teacher will use this information to decide where to take the conversation the following
day. Concentration, Coaching
Throughout the unit, every ten minutes of discussion time, the teacher will pose a hook
type of question to the students and ask them to think, pair-share in response. Curiosity,

Literature circles completed once a week 50 minutes. Students rotate through the roles so
each student has the opportunity to participate with a different role. Teacher will circulate
through the group discussions to evaluate on discussion and the role sheets they

Students will respond to a classroom discussion outside of the classroom on our Wiki
page 10-15 minutes avergae. They will respond with their ideas and defend their ideas
using textual evidence. Connection, Coherence, Concentration, Context
When completing the unit, students will select a theme that they found prevalent
throughout the novel. Students will find textual evidence, quotations, and character
actions/behaviors to support their ideas to create a final presentation. Connection,
