duri ng Pat ' s st ay i n Gary Burt on' s band, and mi ne wi t h Kei t h
Jarret t . l t wasn' t real l y t i l l 1980, however, when he asked me t o
pl ay on hi s al bum
" 80/ 81 "
and t he ext ensi ve t our i ng t hat
followed it, that we became the close friends that we are today.
Si nce t hen we have t oured, pl ayed and recorded t oget her i n

Br ecker t o Abbey Li ncol n and many ot her s. When Rut h
Cameron and I were marri ed i n 1989, Pat was my

man".
Rut h and I real l y f eel l i ke he i s part of our f ami l y.
Pat and I have t al ked about maki ng t hi s duet al bum f or
many years and now, f i nal l y, we' ve t aken t he t i me t o record i t .
I have al ways admi r ed Pat ' s musi cal vi si on. Hi s mel odi es,
chords and voi ci ng are uni que unt o hi m. He i s an i nnovat or i n
t he sound he get s, as he i s i n hi s composi ng and i mprovi si ng.
He has a r ar e gi f t t hat enabl es hi m t o communi cat e t he
har moni es and mel odi es he hear s i n a way t hat r eaches al l
di f f er ent ki nds of l i st ener s, whi l e al ways r et ai ni ng t he ki nd of
dept h and beaut y onl y f ound i n t he best i mprovi sed musi c. Hi s 5
musi cal present at i on i s al ways beyond cat cgory, and hi s sense
of t he sound i n musi c t hat comes f rom t he f t rcl i ng of t hi s count ry
i s uncanny. Of course, he i s f rom Mi ssouri , as I am, whi ch surel y
has somet hi ng t o do wi t h i t . l cal l hi s sound,

i nst r ument s and t he r ecor di ng s t udi o i t s el f , whi ch I hav e
admi red as a t rademark of Pat ' s own records f or many years.
I have been savi ng songs f or t hi s recordi ng f or some t i me now'
Some ar e songs t hat woul d obvi ousl y f unct i on wel l as duet s,
but some are songs where I coul d i magi ne an al most orchest ral
approach, usi ng t he vari ous addi t i onal gui t ars and synt hs t hat
Pat has managed t o i ncorporat e so nat ural l y and organi cal l y
i nt o hi s sound.

Our cr i t er i a f or choosi ng s ongs wer e s i mpl y t o f i nd
beaut i f ul mel odi es and chords t hat i nspi red us. At t he begi nni ng
of t he proj ect , I sent Pat a casset t e of f our songs I had been
t hi nki ng about f or t hi s record t o i nspi re hi m and t o gi ve hi m an
i dea about what ki nd of record I want ed t o make. He cal l ed me
back right away to say that he loved all of the songs, and in fact,
we went on to record them all. They were :
