Teacher guidelines
The following guidelines are supplied to enable teachers to carry out valid and
consistent assessment using this internal assessment resource.
Teachers need to be very familiar with the outcome being assessed by Achievement
Standard Geography 91013. The achievement criteria and the explanatory notes
contain information, definitions, and requirements that are crucial when interpreting
the standard and assessing students against it.
Context/setting
In this activity students will research availability of fresh water. They will present their
research as a report
The activity requires students to describe a global pattern of the topic selected,
describe factors and/or processes that caused or contributed to this pattern, and
describe the significance of the topic to peoples lives.
Provide students with a list of fresh water issues and initial guidance in setting up a
web page.
Conditions
This assessment activity takes place over a period of three weeks of in- and out-of-
class time. For example, in the first two weeks, students might research their topic
and plan their report using in- and out-of-class time. Students will prepare their report
during the third week.
Resource requirements
Teacher provided resources on fresh water availability should be of sufficient quality
to enable candidates to achieve at Excellence level; however, students should be
encouraged to provide additional resource material.
Provide students with access to the Internet, atlases, world map outlines, newspaper
and online articles, and computers with MSWord.
Use reputable websites such as those of the World Health Organization
(http://www.who.int) and NZ History (http://nzhistory.net.nz).

Student instructions
Fresh water availability is a global geographic issue that affects regions and nations
across different continents and hemispheres.
This assessment activity requires you to individually research and describe:
a global pattern associated with fresh water availability.
the factors and/or processes that have caused or contributed to the global pattern
how the availability of fresh water is significant to peoples lives in different parts
of the world.
You will present this as a report, using software such MSWord.
You have three weeks to complete this activity. In weeks one and two, research fresh
water availability and plan your report during class time. You can spend time on this
at home as well. Use the third week to prepare your report.
You will be assessed on how well you are able to describe the global pattern of fresh
water availability, the factors and/or processes that caused or contributed to the
pattern, and the significance of fresh water availability to peoples lives in different
parts of the world.

Research Fresh water availability
Select regions of the world to research that show the pattern of fresh water
availability and the processes that create this pattern. You must show that this is a
global pattern and therefore you must use examples from a range of places around
the world. These could include, but are not limited to:
The Sahel, Australia, Middle East, Southern Africa, Chile, Mongolia,
South West USA
Find out about the availability of fresh water, the causes of the pattern, and the
impact the lack of fresh water has on peoples lives in different parts of the world.
Gather material such as maps, images, diagrams, and other relevant information.
Use the information that you have been given in class as well as the internet.
Throughout your answers to the patterns, causes, and significance to peoples lives,
you must refer to regions or nations across different continents or hemispheres and
use geographic terminology and concepts.
Describe the patterns and causes
Fully describe the global pattern of the availability of fresh water. Use appropriate
geographic terminology to identify and describe the spatial pattern. Use maps or
diagrams to support your answer.
Fully describe the factors and/or processes that have caused or contributed to the
global pattern. In your descriptions refer to different parts of the world, such as
regions, nations, continents, and hemispheres.
Describe how the availability of water is significant to peoples lives
Fully describe how the lack of fresh water is or was significant to peoples lives in
different parts of the world.
Consider:
positive and negative impacts
social and economic impacts
long- and short-term effects
other significant impacts on peoples lives, including both individuals and groups.
Support your answer with global evidence.

Create your report using this information. Seek help from your teacher if necessary.
