Expression/performance.
Objective: TLW identify, compose,
and describe basic music

2. Big Understanding:
Music notation is universal! Once
you learn how to read and write
music, you can read and write
(communicate) with anyone and
everyone the world over!

3 Assessment Evidence:
TLW identify and demonstrate the sound each note in standard notation makes,
what it looks like, and complete an activity sheet.

4. Opening Hook: Play music as students enter classroom.
1. Allow students to close their eyes and listen to music then discuss how the music
made them feel.
2. Music can be broken down mathematically using money in a way they will never
forget!
3. Music is a universal language!

5. Instructional Strategies/Student Activities:
1. Demonstrating what each note looks like, and the sounds each note makes
2. TLW write, and speak/repeat the sound each note makes
3. Will involve rhythmic body movements (clapping/tapping foot/head nodding)
4. Will utilize visual aids (Chart paper, laptop w/speakers, projector)
5. Activity Sheet

metronome to count beats, projector for viewing webpage, activity sheet,

7. Grouping Patterns:
Whole Group and Individual

8. Ending, Summary/Reflection: Anyone can make music!
Music can be fun and not difficult to learn once they understand how it can be
broken down mathematically. Music is a universal language that enables the
student to communicate all over the world. Now that we have learned the
standard notation; is there anyone who wants to learn to play an instrument?
