Zombie Apocalypse Persuasive Project

Public Speaking

SCENARIO: As of 8:26 a.m. on November 10, 2014, the zombie apocalypse has
taken over Nicollet Public School (and only Nicollet Public School). You and your
partner have to survive, uninfected, until 3:30 p.m. November 14, 2014. Every
student, teacher, administrator, and staff member on this campus that is not enrolled
in this class is currently, for the sake of this project, a zombie. (And they are
probably all hungry!) The campus will function normally, otherwise.

GOAL: This will be a persuasive, logic-driven assignment. What this means in practical terms:
Write a 1-page thoughtfully devised and clearly argued plan, which convinces your audience
(me!) that your plan to survive on NPSs campus is the best and most successful plan.

How you do this is up to you (your approach, style, etc.), but each pairing must
create a tool kit. In your tool kit, name and describe the 5 objects / tools and 5
character traits that one must have to survive. Write a short explanation (approximately
3 4 sentences) for each item and trait that you list.
Also, decide and state the ideal on-campus safe zone in which you think you
and your partner can survive for five days. Be sure to explain why this is the best place,
where and how to get food, and the best route to your safe zone from our classroom
(room B-4). Your safe zone plan can be a part of your 1-page survival plan.

Note: In your tool kit, you cannot list flamethrowers, teleportation devices, etc. You have to know
where and how to access these tools on campus. In addition, your traits must be emotional or
intellectual, not physical attributes. For example, you can pick courage or leadership but not super-
speed or the ability to walk through walls.

You must create a visual aid of your tool kit, which you and your partner will present to the class
along with your 1-page survival plan and tool kit explanations. (You can put your tool kit
explanations on your visual aid.)

YOUR GRADE WILL BE BASED ON THE FOLLOWING:
- Follows all of the above guidelines
- Makes a compelling argument that your plan is the best
- Describes a plan that is logical and well-reasoned
- Uses creativity
- Clear and well-organized
- Grammatically well-written
- Clearly presented to class (approximately 4-5 minute presentation)

PROJECT ELEMENTS:
- 1-page survival plan (create a survival plan and argue that it is the best plan)
- Tool kit explanations (5 objects and 5 traits 3 to 4 sentence explanations)
- Tool kit visual aid (pictorial examples of all tool kit items can include explanations)
- Safe zone plan (why this is the best place, how to get there, how to get food this can be a
part of your 1-page survival plan)
