Fall 2015

Rebekah Bowen
Tell Me a Story
Grade/Subject: 7
th
grade Math
Topic: Writing and solving multi-step equations
Technology needed: computer with internet access, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint
Other materials needed: pencil, and paper for brainstorming and drafting
Standards: MCC7.EE.3 Solve multi-step real-life
and mathematical problems posed with positive and negative rational numbers in any form
(whole numbers, fractions, and decimals), using tools strategically.
MCC7.EE.4 Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem,
and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the
quantities.
Essential Question: How can using a different format to present a math concept help fellow
students to better understand the concept?
Opening Session: Students will follow the link below to practice writing and solving equations.
https://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra/solving-linear-equations-and-
inequalities/linear-equation-word-problems-tu/v/basic-linear-equation-word-problem
Differentiation: Within this link there is immediate feedback as well as scaffolding to allow
students who still may be struggling to understand the process for creating equations from
word problems.
Work Session: Students groups will work to create and illustrate a word problem scenario.
They will be allowed to do this using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or in a Prezi. Second, they
write an equation based on the information, and finally, solve the equation. The groups will
upload their presentations to allow an online carousel in which they will be working the
problems and giving the creating group feedback through the My Big Campus discussion
board. Exemplar using Prezi:
http://prezi.com/unjqnqfet2-a/?utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=copy&rc=ex0share
Differentiation: Groups will be allowed to choose how they present the knowledge of multi-
step equations.
Closing Session: Students will discuss the presentation software they chose and their
likes/dislikes about the tool. They will also answer the EQ as a ticket out the door.
