Global Issue
deforestation
+
What makes an issue global?
When a topics features are located over two regions
or large areas of the world. Features are located by
describing the areas of the world in which they are
found, eg:
One hemisphere (northern or southern)
Association with the distribution of ocean/s
Specific continent/s or parts of continent/s
Particular latitudes (e.g 20 north and south of the
equator)
Linked to another global topic (eg natural vegetation
and climate)
Orientation compass direction (eg the direction of
the Trade Winds)

Patterns
Patterns are identifiable similarities in physical or cultural
features, statistics or events and human responses.
SPATIAL PATTERNS: is where there is a pattern of the
same event in places that are far apart. The pattern may
be arranged in a line, a clustering of points or areal (not
aerial) patterns.
LINEAR PATTERNS: a pattern that forms a meaningful
line, usually identified by roads or rivers.
POINT PATTERNS: is closely arranged & somewhat
organized points & try to find patterns.
AREA PATTERNS: patterns scattered over a wide area,
look out for colours, textures and nearness.

Explain
EXPLAIN = means to provide reasons and to
account for. You must justify your answer
with evidence or reasons, as well as being
able to compare and identify differences.
To EXPLAIN you must say why things are,
why they are where they are, and to support,
back up and justify your answer.
+
Explain 2 each of the point, line and
area patterns you can identify
Where are the brightest lights? Why? Where do most people live?
Why? Where do few people live? Why? Why would some people and
places not be represented on this map?
+
Some identifiable patterns
Brightest are most urbanized not necessarily most populated.
China & India most populated countries, but not brightest.
Japan very bright, densely populated.
In the deserts there are few/no lights. Why?
High mountain ranges = few/no lights why?
Political division e.g North & South Korea? Why?
Development of areas, swiss alps vs rocky mountains
Transport systems / River settlements.
Technology access / wealth distribution.
Weather?
Coastline settlements
