Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 1. PROMOTING CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND LEARNING
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs are grounded in a child development knowledge
base. They use their understanding of young childrens characteristics and needs, and of multiple interacting
influences on childrens development. (NAEYC, 2010)

Brief Description of Evidence:
During the spring semester of 2013 during my ECED 120-Infants, Children & Adolescents course, I
developed, upon extensive research, a study of Erik Eriksons Theory of Psychosocial Development. The unit
framework required the use of Eriksons studies of child growth and development, research of the
developmental stages of life based upon the overall theory, and analyzed applications to life based upon each
specified stage. From the developed research and analysis, I developed a detailed application of Eriksons
knowledge intertwined with real-life experiences.
Analysis of What I Learned:
Through completion of this artifact, I prepared an appreciative, grounded understanding of a child
development knowledge base. I understand Eriksons research of the psychosocial development of individuals
and the importance each stage has upon their lifelong growth and development. I now know each stage of
development holds specific characteristics and in order to master the crucial skills, the individual requires
needs that must be met. Through this artifact I have learned how each stage coincides with one another and
how in order to master future stages, one must complete and master all previous ones. To grow and develop
throughout life, one must understand and integrate each of the skills mastered within Eriksons stages of
psychosocial development.
How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:
This artifact proves my competence with NAEYC Standard #1 as I show my knowledge base within child
development. Erik Erikson is one of many theorists who believed an individual undergoes certain stages within their life,
mastering unique skills to help them grow and develop. Each stage specifies characteristics in which the individual
undergoes. Based upon each category are required needs that must be met in order to master and move onto the next
stage of life. After researching and reading numerous materials over Erik Erikson and his Theory of Psychosocial
Development, I feel knowledgeable of how to handle certain age brackets of young children. Based upon the
age, children undergo unique developmental milestones. Each stage will determine my lesson planning in
which will target said areas and help guide my students toward effectively mastering each developmental skill.
