Lesson Overview &
Learning Environment:
Students have an understanding why something is
considered living. Now, the students will gain an
understanding of how living things survive. Students
will be in the computer lab to complete the 45 minute
module. Teacher and teacher assistant will circulate
to assist students.
NC Essential Standards: 1.L1:Understand characteristics of various
environments and behaviors of humans that enable
plants and animals to survive
1.L2: Summarize the needs of living organisms for
energy and growth

Pedagogical Approach Universal Design Learning (UDL)- Students will gain
understanding through visual and audio
representations of content. Students will make a
text-to-self connection to understand what living
things need in their environment to live and grow
Tasks to Meet Learning Students will start with a presentation of
science vocabulary Animal and Plant Habitats

Targets There will be two questions in the presentation
that the student will record in their science
journals
Show the book The Salamander Room
Ask class about their own pets or pets that
they know of and what these animals need in their
environments. This will be question #3 in their
science journals
Assessments Teachers will use observation to informally
assess who is not understanding the concept of
what a habitat is and what do living things
need in their habitat to survive
Students will label picture cards of habitats
and name one animal that may live in that
habitat
Follow-Up: Students will use their knowledge of how a
habitat provides living things with what they
need to complete the final project
Students will complete My Habitat for
homework
Accommodations:

Audio and visuals accompany text of
presentation and story
Labeling activity uses picture cards
