What are Calories?
The energy obtained
from carbohydrates,
proteins, and fats that
our bodies use for
energy.
A Calorie is a way to
measure how much
energy a food provides
to your body.
How Many Calories Do You Need?
Adult males need 2,500 daily calories
a day and even more if they are very
active.
Adult women need 2,000 daily
calories a day and like men, even more
if they are active or pregnant.
Nutrients
What are nutrients?
Essential substances that your
body needs in order to grow and
stay healthy
Six categories of nutrients:
Water
Proteins
Carbohydrates
Minerals
Vitamins
Fats
Keeps body temperature normal.
Lubricates and cushions your joints.
Protects your spinal cord and other
sensitive tissues.
Gets rid of wastes through
urination, perspiration, and bowel
movements.

Water makes up about 65% of the
human body.



Water helps the body in the
following ways:
Carbohydrates are sugars and starches that the
body uses for ENERGY!
Carbohydrates provide most of the energy that
enables the body to do work.
1 gram of Carbohydrates equals 4 calories
PLANTS are the major source of carbohydrates in
the food we eat along with bread, pasta, sugar, soda,
cereal, fruits and many more.

Proteins
Proteins are made from many
amino acids connected
together in different
arrangements.

Provide the building materials
your body needs to grow and
repair itself.


Complete proteins:
Foods containing all the essential amino
acids Examples: fish, meat, eggs, milk,
cheese

Incomplete proteins:
Foods that are missing some essential
amino acids Examples: Legumes, nuts,
whole grains
