How to Inflate a Balloon Using Baking Soda and Vinegar

What materials are required?

Balloon (1 per student)
Small bottle (cleaned glass beverage bottle will work well) (1 per student)
Small funnel (1 per student)
Baking soda (2 tablespoons per student)
Vinegar (4 ounces per student)
Experimental Procedure
1. Using the funnel, add the baking soda to each balloon (two people may be
needed for this; one person to hold the balloon open and the other person to pu
t the baking soda inside of the balloon).
2. Pour the vinegar into the bottle.
3. Carefully fit the balloon over the bottle opening (be careful not to dro
p the baking soda into the vinegar yet).
4. Once the balloon is fitted snugly on the nozzle, hold up the balloon and
allow the baking soda to fall into the vinegar.
5. Observe the chemical reaction and effect on the balloon.
6. Record observations.
A volcano of foam
an empty 16 oz. plastic soda or water bottle
1/2 cup 3% hydrogen peroxide
Dish detergent
Food coloring
1 teaspoon (or half a packet) of yeast dissolved in warm water
ill your soda bottle with the 1/2 cup of peroxide and then add a squirt or two o
f dish detergent. If you want, you can also add a squirt of food coloring to mak
e things a bit festive. Now you need to prepare your yeast. Actually you have a
couple of options, you could just pour the dry yeast into the bottle. This will
create a surge of foam from the bottle with large bubbles. The yeast acting as a
catalyst to release oxygen from the hydrogen peroxide. However, if you want a r
ich creamy foam of tiny bubbles, you should really add your teaspoon of yeast to
a few tablespoons of warm water, then add the liquid to your bottle.

A 1000 mg Vitamin C tablet from the pharmacy (you can also use two 500mg)
Tincture of iodine (2%) also from the pharmacy
Hydrogen peroxide (3%) yep, also from the pharmacy
Liquid laundry starch (see below for alternatives)
Safety goggles

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: This experiment should only be done with the help
of an adult. Iodine will stain just about anything it touches and it can be haza

needed throughout the experiment. Be sure your helpful adult reads the caution l
