ED PS 5441 Lesson Plan

Summary: For this lesson, the students will understand prefixes and suffixes and how they
change words. For this lesson the main suffix that we will focus on is or. They will chose a
profession that ends with or and discover more about that profession. They will then write a
three paragraph essay about that profession.
Intended Learning Outcomes: The students will be able to identify and know the meaning of the
most common prefixes and derivational suffixes. They will also learn more about a profession
and researching it. They will then apply their knowledge to write a paper.
Materials: Prezi presentation, Written comprehension assessment, Writing prompt, Writing
rubric, Computers with internet, books, and magazines.
Instructional Procedure:
1. First teach the students about common prefixes and suffixes with using the Prezi
presentation.
2. Make sure the students understand how prefix or suffix changes the meaning of the word.
Also go over how they can be used in sentences.
3. We will then focus on suffixes that end in or. The connection will be made that when it
is applied to certain words, it turns the word into a profession.
4. Next we will do a quick written assessment to make sure they understand the concept of
prefixes and suffixes. Written Assessment attached.
5. Ask the students to focus on one profession that they want to learn more about.
6. Give them their writing prompt for the paper they need to write about that profession.
Writing Prompt attached.
7. Allow for a week for the paper to be written, a little bit every day. Rough draft written
first then a final draft. Show them the rubric. Rubric attached.
8. Have the students peer review each other in groups of two. Have them tell each other two
things they liked in their partners paper and one thing they can improve on.
9. Teacher grades the paper and gives them a score.

Assessment: There will be two different assessments. First will be a concept assessment. I will
give them a quick written test to see if they learned the common prefixes and suffixes that we
taught in the prezi. They will be asked to write what they mean and give examples of words with
those prefixes and suffixes. The next assessment will be the literacy assessment. The literacy
assessment is their paper that they will write about the profession that they chose. Both
assessments attached below.

Writing Prompt
You will write a three paragraph essay about the profession that you chose. You will write about
information like what the job looks like each day, what perquisites are required to get the job,
how much they make, what hours they work, and where the job will take them. You will need to
have at least two sources to help boost your paper. One must be in a format of a book,
newspaper, or magazine while the other source must be an online source. You will be graded on
the six traits of writing; Idea, organization, sentence fluency, word choice, voice, and
conventions. This paper will be read by your teacher and peers. You will have one week to
complete the hand written paper with a rough draft and final draft. Have fun!
