Promethean Board Internet
Computer Lab Pencil
Laceycomputerlessons.weebly.com Paper
Procedures:
Anticipatory Set- start with a video on careers (2 minutes)
Follow up the video with group collaboration where each group of 2 or 3 students create a list of possible careers that interest
them and that they think are important in the Pittsburgh area (healthcare fields, oil and gas industry, etc). (3 minutes)
Direct Instruction- Discuss how personality traits and hobbies help determines the careers we choose. Give examples like
people who are introverted and like animals might consider becoming a veterinarian. A person who loves science and is
adventurous might consider becoming an astronaut. Then explain that careers differ from jobs because jobs are activities that
we do to earn money(cashier, pizza boy, etc) and obtaining a career occurs over a long period of time and provides you with
opportunities to progress ( doctor, lawyer, astronomer, nurse, teacher, etc). Finally I will briefly discuss local vocational schools
and colleges (Steel Center Area Vocational Technical School grades 10-12, Pitt, Duquesne, CCAC, Art Institute, etc) (5 minutes)
Guided Practice- Next I will project my website onto the board while the students go to a computer. Together I will guide them
to the personality quiz at http://www.kidzworld.com/quiz/quiz-find-your-ideal-career-path. Once they take the quiz then I will
direct their attention to the scavenger hunt and the career website http://www.onetonline.org/ where they can begin
researching careers.(5 minutes)
Independent Practice- Independently students will research a career and answer questions from the scavenger hunt link
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NP8QQXW. (10 minutes)
Closing- Once students finish their scavenger hunt I will recap the difference between a job and a career then redirect them to
the blog page on my website where they can apply what they learned to answer the open ended career question. (5 minutes)

Accommodations:
-work with a partner
-work one on one with the teacher
