Rethinking the Flipped Classroom
By Dr. Lodge McCammon
The value of a flipped classroom goes way beyond having
students watch videos for homework. During this session
Dr. Lodge McCammon will model a new teaching method
which uses elements of flipped instruction as well as music and
movement to engage students. Participants will be challenged
to discuss the method in order to identify the features that are most
applicable for their classrooms.

Creativity, Collaboration, and
Community in the STEM Classroom
By Kyle Schutt
Weve seen how music and video can be infused into the classroom to
create engaging learning experiences that encourage collaboration.
What other techniques can we utilize to captivate our students
interest? Throughout the week we will embark in playful,
interconnected learning that inspires creativity. Today we will
start by observing STEM through the Cs of 21st century skills.
We will see how educators are utilizing technology to collaborate
and tackle their biggest challenges. We will also participate in
community-driven experiences that demonstrate the power
of digital, mobile, and social learning.
How Many Cs are in
STEM Education?
Daily STEM Challenges
Chum Bucket Catapults
Catapults have achieved rock star status at Discovery Education
thanks to Science Channels Punkin Chunkin.
Spaghetti Challenge
Using the fundamentals of architecture, today's challenge is
to build the tallest spaghetti structure with a marshmallow on
the top. Structures must be self supporting and stand for at
least 10 seconds.

Learning by Doing in a
Modern Learning Environment
By Ginger Lewman
We know that in todays world, its less about knowing all the facts
and instead, being able to ideate, prototype, build, grow, learn,
and improve. And there are many ways to help students master
and internalize that process, no matter where they are. Well take
a look at the exciting things that can happen as kids get excited
about learningand doing in ways they never thought possible.

Embracing the Power
of Learning Communities
By Lance Rougeux
Drawing upon results of the recent evaluation of Discovery
Educations professional learning community, the Discovery
Educator Network (DEN), and his ongoing research, Rougeux will
discuss the importance of community for educators and students
and the importance of modeling, ownership and pursuing your
passions. What are the benefits and challenges associated with
social in the context of both teaching and learning? How do we
find our niche within a professional learning community? How does
our own participation as active or passive community members
model behavior influence our expectations of our students?
Ultimately, well discover that choosing a community is a lot
like choosing a doughnut.
