NARRATIVE AND PICTORIAL REPORTS ON THE SECOND
AND THIRD QUARTER NATIONAL SCHOOL-BASED
EARTHQUAKE AND FIRE DRILL
I. INTRODUCTION AND DRILL SCENARIO
In line with the campaign o the !epartment o "ducation #!ep"d$
in e%uipping the school children with the &nowledge, proper attitude and
s&ills on what to do in case o a natural and man'made disasters li&e
earth%ua&e and (re, San Juan "lementary School conducted its %uarterly
earth%ua&e and (re drill in the school campus last June )* and July ),
)+,- at e.actly / o0cloc& in the morning or earth%ua&e drills, and 1
o0cloc& in the aternoon or (re drills. !r. Virgilio R. 2yhon, the school
principal, led the acti3ity with the teachers and their respecti3e classes.
4he drill was carried out simultaneously and smoothly. 2ll grade le3els
occupied the designated area or them 5ased on the school e3acuation
plan.
Beore the conduct o the earth%ua&e and (re drill, !r. 2yhon
instructed all the pupils and teachers and e3en parents in attendance
ater the 6ag ceremony e3ery 7onday o what to do in case o a disaster
li&e an earth%ua&e. 8n June )* and July ) during the morning 5rea& a
siren sound 5lurted or one minute as a signal that an earth%ua&e is
currently happening. "3ery5ody in their respecti3e classes duc&ed and
co3ered themsel3es under their armchairs and ta5les. 2ter that, the
teachers led their ad3isory classes in heading to the designated
e3acuation area located in ront o the 9rincipal0s 8:ce Building. 4hey
were grouped together according to the class where they 5elong. 4hen,
all classroom teachers did a headcount to ma&e sure that all pupils are
accounted or. 7r. 2rturo Cruz, the school !RR7C coordinator announced
the termination o the drill. In summary, the drill was successully
implemented and no5ody was in;ured 5ecause the routines were
systematic and e3ery5ody was cooperati3e during the acti3ity.
II. ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED PRIOR TO THE CONDUCT ON
EARTHQUAKE AND FIRE DRILL

V. PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED
Based on the o5ser3ation during and ater the drill, the ollowing
pro5lems were encountered<
2. 4hough the pupils were properly oriented, there were still some o
them who did not ta&e the drill seriously=
B. 4here were some pupils who were seen disoriented and weren0t a5le
to go immediately in their assigned %ueues= and
C. Some classes went out o their respecti3e classrooms a 5it later
ater the siren was sounded
VI. HOW THE SCHOOL ADDRESS THE PROBLEM

2ter seeing the aorementioned pro5lems, !r. Virgilio 2yhon,
together with 7r. Joel Fernandez and 7r. 2rturo Cruz o the School0s
!isaster Ris& Reduction and 7anagement Committee, ga3e a post drill
acti3ity to reorient the pupils on their 5eha3ior during the drill. 4hey also
ga3e some warnings and reminders with regard to panic&ing and a3oiding
stampede in case that the real scenario happens.
VII. RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the o3erall perormance o the School0s !isaster Ris&
Reduction and 7anagement Committee, the ollowing recommendations
are here5y gi3en<
2. Some possi5le alling de5ris li&e rusty roos and dilapidated ceilings
in some 5uildings o the school must 5e repaired=
B. Some classrooms must remo3e their cup5oards or 5oo&shel3es that
are placed a5o3e the pupils des&=
C. Ceiling ans and 6uorescent lamps must 5e inspected i they are still
hea3ily screwed or intact= and
!. 2ll classrooms must ha3e a poster regarding !isaster Ris& Reduction
and 7anagement and must 5e placed in a conspicuous area.
