Sample essay: Kapitel 2A (Nachricht)

The assignment for this essay, an e-mail response, was tailored to the curriculum of a third-
semester German course that included the Deutsche Welle Telenovela Jojo sucht das Glck
(http://www.dw.de/dw/0,,31564,00.html). In the first episode, Jojo, a student from Brazil, arrives
in Cologne. Her first impressions of the city are enthusiastic, although she accidentally leaves
her wallet in a taxi. Students in the third-semester German course were asked to take the role of
Jojo in writing an e-mail to a friend back in Brazil.

The e-mail below fulfills the objectives of the assignment to a high degree. It includes
information typical of an e-mail, including a subject line, an appropriate greeting, and a closing.
The student author draws on information from the chapter in using a texting abbreviation (GuK)
to conclude the e-mail. The body of the e-mail contains numerous details taken from the episode
of the Telenovela, as well as Jojos reactions to them.

Hallo Isabel!
Mein erster Tag in Kln war zuerst gut, und dann ging alles schief! Die Leute hier sind so nett
und die Stadt ist so sauber und ordentlich, aber ich bin sehr vergesslich! Ich habe meine Tasche
in dem Taxi vergessen! Der Taxifahrer hat um 5 Uhr zu Hause sein gemusst und er ist zu schnell
gefahren. Ich wei nicht, was ich tun soll. Aber, die Stadt ist sehr schn. Die Stadt ist sehr voll
auch, so viele Leute! Ich habe den Dom zuerst gesehen und er war so alt, gro, und groartig.
Ich war sehr froh. Ich bin mit einem Mann auf den Treppen des Dom gestoen, aber er war sehr
nett und entschuldigte sich! Ich habe auch eine Kneipe gesehen - sehr hbsch. Leute haben auf
der Strae Musikinstrumente auch gespielt. Alles ist so neu und lustig hier in Kln. Ich werde
alles hier mgen ich denke! Ich habe kein Geld jetzt (mein Geld ist in meiner Tasche), aber ich
bin froh und ich hoffe, dass ich meine Tasche bald finde. Der Taxifahrer war sehr nett,
hoffentlich ist er anstndig auch! Ich wunsche mir, dass Du hier warst! Vielleicht kannst Du
mich bald besuchen?
