At the hands of mass-market retailers
like H&M and Macys, it merely becomes a
commodity to sell and profit from.

If you call yourself an
artist, then you are
second-rate.


Oxford Dictionarys definition of art:
the expression or application of human
creative skill and imagination, typically in a
visual form such as painting or sculpture,
producing works to be appreciated primarily
for their beauty or emotional power.

This definition puts fashion in the same realm
as art.
While a definitive answer to the question may
never be reached and the tug of war between
both sides will certainly persist, perhaps its
best to think of art and fashion as having a
symbiotic relationship two different entities
that feed off of one another.
