Storm With 106mph Gusts

Hits Flooded Britain-Ireland
By Jill Lawless And
Seth Borenstein

BRITAINS WEATHER service

says it sees the tentacles of
climate change in the spate of
storms and floods that battered
the country, but has stopped
short of saying that global
warming directly caused the
extreme conditions.
Last months round of bad weather
slammed into Britains west coast with
torrential rain and winds gusting up to
106mph. Trucks were toppled, trees were
felled and a major chunk of the railway
was closed.
The website of rail operator Virgin
Trains greeted visitors with the words:
Do Not Travel.
England, which has been lashed by wind
and rain since December, had its wettest
January since records began in 1766.
FLOODS
The resulting floods have drenched the
southwestern coast of England, the lowlying Somerset Levels and the Thames
Valley west of London, where hundreds
of properties have been swamped after the
Thames burst its banks.
Britains Met Office, the nations
weather agency, said in a paper published
during the storms that there is no definitive answer on the role played by climate
change in the recent weather and floods.
But it said there is an increasing body of
evidence that extreme daily rainfall rates
are becoming more intense, probably due
to a warming world.
Met Office chief scientist Julia Slingo
told the BBC that all the evidence suggests there is a link to climate change.
It was the latest in a series of assertions
by weather agencies linking extreme
weather events with human-made global
warming. Last year the Met Office and
the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration said events ranging from
Superstorm Sandy flooding to US heat
waves to extreme rainfall in Australia and
New Zealand had all been made more
likely by climate change.
EVIDENCE
The Met office study discusses evidence
of increasingly extreme weather events and
links both Britains damp winter and the
extreme cold that has hit the United States
and Canada to perturbations in the jet
stream over the Pacific Ocean and North
America. But it does not say outright that
global warming caused the flooding. To
do that, scientists take months, sometimes

Preston And England Great Sir Tom Finney Dies At 91

FORMER England and Preston forward
Sir Tom Finney died last month at the
age of 91.
Preston confirmed the extremely sad
news adding Sir Tom was the greatest
player to ever play for Preston North End
and one of the all-time greats for England.
Finney played for Preston from 1946
until he retired 14 years later, scoring
210 goals in 473 appearances. He won
footballer of the year in 1954 and 1957
the first player to receive the honor twice.
He also scored 30 times in 76 appearances for England, putting him joint sixth
on the all-time scoring list with Alan
Shearer and Nat Lofthouse. The Preston
man also exhibited his immense power
and flair at three World Cups from 1950
to 1958 representing England.
Finney was knighted in 1998.
Football League Chairman Greg Clarke
said Finney was quite possibly the finest
player to have ever played in the Football
League and was a true gentleman.
EPITOME
He was also the epitome of the one club
man with few people ever having contributed as much to a single team, their city
or our competition, Clarke said. He will
be greatly missed by the English game.
Often described as the most complete

club or country. Blessed with exquisite
balance, skill and tactical intelligence, he
played the game with a grace or indeed
good grace given to very few: he was
never booked, sent off or even ticked off
by referees. Stanley Matthews may have
been the publics favourite, but to purists
Finney was the greater all-rounder.
His brilliance inspired and often carried
the team. Bill Shankly, an established

right-half for Preston when Finney joined

(and later manager of Liverpool), said of
his friend: Tom Finney would have been
great in any team, in any match and in any
age ... even if he had been wearing an overcoat. It was classic Shankly hyperbole,
though few who saw Finney play would
disagree with the sentiment.
PLUMBER
Born in Preston, in the street next to
the clubs Deepdale stadium, Finney was
nicknamed the Preston Plumber after completing an apprenticeship with his familys
plumbing business.
He was linked with a move to Italian
side Palermo in 1952, but Preston chairman Nat Buck quashed the deal, saying:
If tha doesnt play for us, tha doesnt
play for anybody.
He twice won the footballer of the year
title, in 1953-54 and 1956-57, and was
twice a runner-up in the league with North
End, as well as playing in the 1954 FA Cup
final defeat to West Brom.
In all, he scored 187 league goals for
the club but in 1961, a year after he retired,
they were relegated from the top flight and
have not returned since.

Cleared Of Sex Charges

A LONGTIME star of the soap opera

Coronation Street was cleared in February of multiple charges of sexual assault
against young girls.
A jury at Britains
Preston Crown Court
found 81-year-old
William Roache, who
plays Ken Barlow on
the show, not guilty of
four counts of indecent assault and two
counts of rape.
Five women had accused Roache
of assaulting them between 1965 and
1971, when they were aged 16 or under.
Prosecutors had argued that Roache
took advantage of his fame to abuse
star-struck girls and then keep them
from speaking out.
But Roache said he did not know the
women accusing him and had never assaulted anyone.
KINDER
In in these situations there are no
winners, and I think we should all be
much kinder to ourselves, Roache
said as he left court surrounded by his
family.
Roache was one of several veteran
UK show business figures arrested after
revelations that the late BBC entertainer
Jimmy Savile was a serial sexual predator who abused scores of young people
over several decades.

RRBarclays Slashes Jobs

While Boosting Bonus
Pool, During Net Loss
By Danica Kirka
BARCLAYS, Britains second-biggest
bank in terms of assets, is to slash up
to 12,000 jobs as it seeks to change its
corporate culture following a string of
scandals.
But even as the reductions were
announced last month, Barclays set
aside more money for bonuses. The
bonus pool rose by 210m in 2013 a
move Chief Executive Antony Jenkins
defended despite the fact the banks
performance worsened in the fourth
quarter.
The cuts include 400 jobs in Barclays investment division, one of the
targets of Jenkins plan to transform
the bank into a more ethical institution
after its involvement in the Libor loan
rate-rigging scandal.
The total staff reduction from a
workforce of 140,000 is part of a plan to
reduce costs to 16.8bn by 2015.
At Barclays, we believe in paying
for performance and paying competitively, he said. Ensuring that we have
the right people in the right roles serving
our customers and clients effectively
in a highly competitive global environment is vital to our ability to generate
sustainable shareholder returns.
LOSS
The news over the job cuts came
as the bank revealed that its net loss
widened to 642m in the fourth quarter, from 589m a year earlier. The
results showed that operating expenses

creative ways of proposing very often impress
us with their romantic efforts; but, a London
mans rowing boat crossing of the Atlantic
to proposed to his beau will not be repeated
too often.
Harry Martin-Dreyer, 27, rowed a diamond
engagement ring the 3,000 mile journey.
Martin-Dreyer made the crossing in a
small rowing boat with crew mate Alex Brand,
braving blisters, treacherous waves, extreme
heat and sharks before arriving in Barbados.
After 50 days of rowing, a decidedly wobbly and bearded Martin-Dreyer then dropped
to one knee and proposed to girlfriend Lucy
Plant.
Martin-Dreyer had kept the ring in a waterproof bag, only revealing his plans to Brand
once they were underway on the voyage
which raised 145,000 for leukaemia and
diabetes charities.
Luckily Plant, 27, accepted and the boys
then celebrated with family and friends, who
had been waiting on the waterside in Port
St Charles.
Plant, who met Mr Martin-Dreyer six years
ago when they were at Bristol University
together, said: He pulled me aside and did
this odd move, I assumed hed fallen over. He
had it in a vacuum packed bag, its a really
beautiful diamond solitaire.
It was fantastic a complete surprise. I
kept saying no, no, no and Harry said: Can
I take that as a yes?

he was encouraged to try the snack after

My favourite snack, to supplement the
poor and meagre prison diet, is cockroaches,
he explained.
There are many here and the best way to

on the floor and turning the lights out.
You can boil them in the kettle or fry

70 Years On

A PINT of beer and recognition for his brave

Fred Harris, an army driver, was honoured
for jumping from his armoured vehicle while
German bullets flew over the bridge and his

He and Sergeant Bill Tynan ran to the aid of

Harris never again saw or even heard

Mayfair dinner party in 1877. As royalty were
not allowed to go into pubs, the married king
reputedly had the Clifton, originally a hunting
lodge, rebranded as a hotel.
Howard Kayman, of estate agency Aston
Chase, said: The new owner is aware of local
feelings but his intentions are to let the pub/
restaurant as a going concern.

The armchair detective, who runs the

museum at Holmess fictional address of
221B Baker Street in London, said: The trial
and conviction of Michael Stone would have
caused the author of the Sherlock Holmes
stories to choke on his pipe.
We are in touch with Michael and he is
delighted that someone is taking an interest
in his case. But this is not about exonerating
people. This is about catching the perpetrator.
This is what Sherlock Holmes did in the
books. He was a forerunner of forensics to
solve a case. You have got to look at the DNA
rather than gossip of prisoners. The DNA
doesnt lie and it rules out Michael Stone. We
need the case to be looked at again.

Great Ormond Street Pioneers

Living Donor Kidney Transplants
For Children

Doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital

have used a new technique to enable children
to receive a kidney transplant from a previously
incompatible donor.
The breakthrough, revealed for the first
time, saves some children as young as 15
months from requiring dialysis after being born
with irreversible kidney failure.
The new practice involves washing the
blood of patients prior to the transplant to
remove antibodies that would have caused the
operation to fail. Although common in adults,
this type of transplant is virtually unheard of
in children. Patients can potentially go home
within 10 days the same as a conventional
kidney transplant.
Of the 28 kidney transplants of all types that
Great Ormond Street has performed in the last
year, 16 organs have come from living donors.

Lawmakers Back Immigration Plans

On Criminals To Strip Citizenship

LAWMAKERS last month backed a

government proposal to give authorities
the power to strip foreign-born terror
suspects of their British citizenship.
The proposal from Home Secretary
Theresa May targets naturalized citizens
who are deemed to have seriously harmed
Britains vital interests.
It came as lawmakers debated a
proposed immigration bill that aims to
make it easier for authorities to deport
foreign-born criminals and others who
do not have the right to stay in Britain.
Citizenship is a privilege, not a

right. These proposals will strengthen

the Home Secretarys powers to ensure
that very dangerous individuals can be
excluded if it is in the public interest to
do so, said immigration minister Mark
Harper.
British politicians have long grumbled
about their obligation to house foreign
convicts who use human rights law to
evade deportation and stay in Britain.
STRESSED
May stressed the proposed new powers would only apply to a very small number of people, but rights campaigners say

UK Inflation Below Target For

First Time In 4 Years

BRITAINS inflation rate slipped in January below the official two percent target
for the first time since 2009, making it less likely that the Bank of England will
move soon to raise interest rates.
Official figures last month showed consumer prices were up 1.9 percent in the
year to January, down from the two percent rate in December. The drop was due
to retailers slashing prices on furniture, alcohol and tobacco.
Chris Williamson, the chief economist of Markit, described the combination of
falling inflation and strong economic growth as a Goldilocks scenario. The Bank
of Englands policymakers will be able to keep their foot on the accelerator for
longer via lower interest rates to help drive a strong and more sustainable recovery.
Until recently the bank had been indicating that its key interest rate would remain
at the record low of 0.5 percent until joblessness fell to a more tolerable level. Once
that unemployment threshold neared, Mark Carney, the banks governor, decided
to update the so-called forward guidance to broaden the range of indicators that
would be considered before rates are raised.
The low inflation number will give the bank even more freedom to let the economy
strengthen before deciding to act on rates.

Storm Hits Flooded Britain

Continued from page 1
London itself was expected to be safe
from the flooding since its protected by
the Thames Barrier, a series of 66-foot
high metal gates across the entire river.
The massive gates can be closed to stop
the tide from coming up the Thames, which
gives more space for the river to handle
excess water from upstream. At low tide,
the Thames barrier is then opened and
the floodwaters flow to the sea. But some
riverside communities were still flooded.
Yet the Met Office said there would be
no quick end to Britains flood misery.
At least one more storm was forecast.
Flood-hit villagers have lambasted Britains environment chief as he visited part
of southwest England where thousands
of acres have been underwater for more
than a month.
Environment Agency chairman Chris
Smith has been criticized for the failure
to dredge rivers on the low-lying Somerset
Levels, where farmland has been inundated
and villages cut off.
Smith said he was very proud of the
work his staff had been doing in the face
of the most extreme weather.
But farmer Jim Winkworth said he
was bloody mad that Smith had not
apologized.
Prime Minister David Cameron also

visited the area earlier in February.

Bouts of rain, high tides and strong
winds have pounded Britain since December, and recently washed away a stretch
of the main rail line linking London and
the southwest.

Royal Help For Flood

PRINCE CHARLES last month

England, riding by boat and tractor
to survey the damage and showing
support for the locals.
The royal pledged a 50,000 donation to help flood victims in the
Somerset Levels area, where thousands of acres dotted with farmland
and villages had been under water
for a month.
Charles braved rain and flooded
roads to meet locals at a reception,
telling those attending: The tragedy is that nothing happened for
so long.
The royal rode on a boat to visit
a village cut off by flood waters, and
later climbed aboard a tractor-towed
trailer to visit a farm.

Freedom For IRA

Man Linked To 1982
Hyde Park Bomb

AN IRISH REPUBLICAN Army veteran

charged with the IRA killing of four soldiers in Londons Hyde Park in 1982 has
been freed from
custody after a
judge ruled that the
man had received
secret British assurances he would
not be arrested.
The judge said
British authorities
in Northern Ireland
in 2007 provided John Downey
John Downey with a confidential document
promising him he would not be arrested if
he entered the United Kingdom.
The 62-year-old Downey, who lives in
the Republic of Ireland, was arrested last
year at Londons Gatwick Airport and
charged with four counts of murder over
the Hyde Park bomb which also killed
seven horses.
The February 25 judgment found that
the 2007 document issued to Downey gave
false assurance, because London police
still wanted to arrest him.
London police used fingerprint and
witness evidence to identify Downey as
an IRA member involved in the Hyde Park
blast, when a nail bomb in a parked car
exploded as ceremonial mounted troops
passed, mortally wounding four soldiers
and seven horses.

Bank Of England
Seeks To Assuage
Rate Hike Fears

BANK OF ENGLAND Governor Mark

Carney sought last month to assure homebuyers and businesses that UK interest
rates wont rise any time soon because the
economic recovery is still fragile.
Though headline figures for growth and
unemployment have improved faster than
previously predicted, Carney said there are
a number of issues that will mean interest rates have to remain low for a while
to come. The banks benchmark interest
rate has been at a record low level of 0.5
percent for nearly five years.

Backing Independence
Means No UK Pound
George Osborne
Informs Scots
SCOTLAND has been warned.
If it votes to leave the United Kingdom later this year, then the new country
walks away from the using the pound as
its currency.
Thats the hard-line and potentially
game-changing message presented last
month by UK Treasury chief George Osborne, who ruled out a currency union in a
speech in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh
last month.
The pound isnt an asset to be divided
up between the two countries after breakup
as if it were a CD collection, Osborne
said. If Scotland walks away from the
UK, it walks away from the UK pound.
Underscoring the importance of the day,
senior leaders for all three major parties
took to the airwaves and backed Osbornes
remarks an unusual show of unity on any
issue other than national security.
The pound also known as sterling is
one of the worlds most-enduring currencies and is one of the main battle-lines in
the run-up to Septembers referendum.
HACKLES
Though the comments may raise the
hackles of many and contrasts with the
love-bombing approach of Prime
Minister David Cameron in his appeal
for unity in early February, Osborne is
gambling that the majority of Scots will
move beyond the romantic appeal of
independence and focus on more tangible
bread-and-butter economic issues.
It also signaled that UK leaders were
willing to stand and fight for the union
on its strengths, and not just on emotion.
Pro-independence leader Alex Salmond
reacted angrily to Osbornes speech, describing the attack on his planned currency
union as an effort to bully and intimidate
Scottish voters. Being part of a sterling
zone has been the centerpiece of the Scottish National Partys strategy to guarantee
a secure, stable transition.
Their efforts to claim ownership of
sterling will backfire spectacularly in terms
of reaction from the people of Scotland
who know that the pound is as much theirs
as it is George Osbornes, he said.
Osborne noted the recent experience
of the euro to back up his view that a
currency union cannot work if there isnt
a high degree of political union. Why, he
asked, should the remaining UK members
England, Wales and Northern Ireland
shoulder the risk of a currency union
should Scotland vote to break away?
INTENSIFICATION
Osbornes remarks signal an intensification of the independence debate. By ruling
out the pound, Osborne is hoping that
Scotlands population of around five million will ask a series of questions that will
tilt the debate against independence and
seasoned economists continue to ponder.
Such as: What would replace the pound?

THE EUROPEAN Commissions president says it would be very tough for

Scotland to join the EU if voters decide
to break away from Britain later this year.
Jose Manuel Barroso told BBC it would
be extremely difficult, if not impossible
for Scotland to get all 28 EU nations to
approve it as a new member if voters
there decide to leave Britain and form an
independent country.
Other EU figures have made similar
comments before, but Barrosos words
came as a stark warning before the binding referendum in Scotland in September.

How would Scotland raise money? What

currency will I use for my pint, let alone
my mortgage?
Theres no question that Scotland has
a welter of resources, such as oil and gas,
highly-rated universities and a whisky so
wonderful the whole world knows about
it. However, aside from the currency issue,
there are issues relating to how the country
would deal with the loss of billions of
pounds handed out by London as well as
future oil production levels.
Polls have consistently put support for
independence at between 25 percent and
30 percent over the past three years, with
support for remaining in the union at between 45 percent and 50 percent. But the
number of undecided voters is significant.

Wettest-Ever Winter Drowning The Nation

LUNDY ISLAND is a lump of granite three

miles long and half a mile wide rearing up
from where the Atlantic meets the Bristol
Channel. If you look from the beach at Westward Ho!, it lies in the middle of the horizon
twelve miles out to sea. The next land beyond
that is America.
That was where our north Devon weather
came from and we young salts had a couple
of rhymes as aide-memoires, to wit
Lundy high
Rain is nigh
and
Lundy near
Rain is here.
These rhymes were part of our collective
weather-lore, all of which came together in
our oft-chanted advertising slogan for Devon:
Come to sunny Debm
Where et rains
Zix days out of sebm.
On the seventh,
It pours.
In modern terms, Devons default weather
setting was wet: it all came from the sea and
rarely stopped.
REMINDED
I have been constantly reminded of my
childhood exposure to rain this winter. It
started coming down on December 5 and
has continued with a rare break ever since.
In the south west and south of England, we
have been subjected to the wettest winter
since records began in 1910 with twice the
average rainfall. There has never been rain
like it or such incessant flooding.
The worst has been in the Somerset
Levels, a patch of the country extending
southwards from Bridgwater, the site of the
last pitched battle fought on English soil at
Sedgemoor. It was at Westonzoyland in July
1685 that the concluding part of the Monmouth Rebellion was fought out with victory
going to the Royalist forces of James II.
James Scott, Duke of Monmouth and
illegitimate son of Charles II, fled the scene
and was apprehended three days later in
Hampshire. He met his end at the hands of
the notorious executioner Jack Ketch who is
claimed to have wielded the axe between five
and eight times to sever Monmouths head.
Many of Monmouths followers met similarly
grisly fates after attendance at Judge Jeffreys
Bloody Assizes.
Somerset Tourism now promote the
Pitchfork Rebellion Trail but it is not a route
you can easily visit these days since much
of it lies under a 200-square mile flood,
completely cutting off several villages, the
most prominent of which are Muchelney and
Moorland. They have been surrounded since
New Year with water up to six feet in depth.
Muchelneys settlement of 200 souls was
mentioned in the Domesday Book, the name
meaning increasingly great island since it
stands on ground elevated somewhat above
marshland. The whole of the Levels in fact
lie below sea level and are drained by a tidal
river, the Parrett, which goes down to the sea
in Bridgwater Bay.
The Parrett and its tributary, the Tone, are
at the core of the problem for over the years
their courses have needed to be dredged to
run off the excess caused by rain. For the past
20 to 30 years dredging has been discon-

tinued. The process

itself causes damage
as the river banks fall
in when the river flow
is strengthened.
RAGE
There has been
rage in Somerset
since the Environment Agency (EA)
who are responsible
for managing land
and protecting it from freakish weather
announced that it put front rooms before
farmland. In other words, their priority is to
protect towns not country. The EA chairman
is Lord Smith, ex-Labour MP Chris Smith
in 1984 the first MP ever to come out and
declare himself gay. He took up his threeday-a-week 100,000 a year post in 2008
when he declared that the country faced
difficult decisions with coastal erosion where
we would have to accept that some places
should be left to the sea.
Now the chickens have come home to
roost and painful, expensive decisions have
to be taken. Prince Charles, the Environment
Secretary Owen Paterson, Lord Smith and the
Prime Minister have all visited the Somerset
Levels and seen for themselves the catastrophe which has overtaken the countryside
and its inhabitants.
MONEY
Money has finally been pledged for dredging to be restarted but the water has yet to
subside. In mid-February the storms were
still coming and the water was still rising.
The locals are asking if anything at all will be
left if it ever dries out. One encouraging sight,
though, was the arrival of a big team from
Holland complete with pumps and expertise.
Four hundred years ago, Dutchmen had
helped to engineer the original Levels. Now
they are back, magnanimously extending a
helping hand.
Elsewhere in the west the coastal railway
line through Dawlish (in sunny Debm) was
subjected to a fearful pounding one night
in early February with waves approaching
50 feet in height, a veritable surge of high
tides and 80 mph winds that destroyed the
railway banking and left the track hanging
like a suspensions bridge over seething seas.
This track was laid back in 1840 by no less
an engineer than Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
It has stood all these years protecting the
houses behind it and keeping alive rail com-

The railway bankings are totally undermined leaving the tracks suspended in Dawlish, Devon.
munication between London and Plymouth.
The destruction of the line means that for at
least six weeks Plymouth and Cornwall will
be cut off from the rest of the country.
And the storms showed no sign of abating
as February turned into March.
WORSE
In fact, things went from bad to worse as
the Thames valley inevitably began to flood
from Oxford all the way down to the outskirts
of London. It was as though the bottom half
of the country had dropped into the sea as
area after area fell into the rising tide of mud
and sewage.
I write as one who knows floods. I grew
up in the Kenwith Valley, Bideford, and we
were subjected to them annually, most of
them happily stopping just below our French
windows. There were eight houses in our valley, all victims of flooding. The reason was
that the small stream that wound through
the field behind our houses overflowed in
heavy rain. This was a common occurrence,
hence the irony with which we sang about

Church Of England Takes Step

Toward Female Bishops
THE CHURCH of Englands General
Synod has moved a step closer to creating
its first female bishop.
The churchs national assembly approved fast-track legislation which could
see the first woman selected as a Church
of England bishop by the end of the year.
It marks another step forward on an
issue that has long divided the church.
Only two years ago, the General Synod
failed to pass legislation by just six votes
drawing criticism from Prime Minister

David Cameron.
But new compromise proposals, which
only apply to England, are aimed at massaging the issue by giving guidance to
parishes that reject female ministry.

These floods were man-made. There was
a culvert downstream where the rivulet flowed
under a road bridge. In times of extra-heavy
rain, this was deliberately blocked by the
local council to stop the town centre further
downstream from being flooded.
INCONVENIENCE
Our consolation was that we rented our
house so it being a victim of flooding was a
passing inconvenience not a crippling finan-

cial blow. Sadly that is not the case on the

Somerset Levels or by the rail track in Dawlish or in the Thames valley. There, people
are losing their livelihoods and their homes.
It is little short of a catastrophe. The
Environment Agency have said there is a
clear hierarchy of importance when it comes
to floods: lives first, then homes and finally
property. The scale of the deluge is such that
we may only be able to save lives.

Lucinda Reaches Heights No

Other Photographers Dare

Lucinda Grange

LUCINDA GRANGE is not your average photographer, as she achieves

heights, literally, that no others do.
Grange, 25, an adventure photographer recently showed off one
of her latest daredevil shots of New
York Citys skyline from a perch on
a Chrysler Building eagle.
The Hartlepool native travels the
world and sneaking atop of many
famous buildings and structures and
snapping photographs.
Just a few of her impressive list
of climbs include the Great Pyramid
of Giza, Firth of Forth Rail Bridge in
Scotland and New Yorks Manhattan
and Brooklyn bridges.
She has risked her life not to
mention the constant threat of
detection by security guards to
compile an amazing portfolio of work.
Grange said: Climbing these
incredible manmade structures is
something most people wouldnt
consider, but I love to test myself
and find out what Im capable of. I
know some people see what I do as
reckless but often the pictures look
more extreme than was the case.
Sometimes climbing a structure
can be fairly easy and a lot of fun.
Getting to see places that very few
people would even dream of going
is a big draw for me. Seeing a city
from an different viewpoint gives you

a completely different perspective

on things.
As well as scaling buildings and
bridges, Grange and her friends have
delved below cities exploring hidden
rivers, abandoned subway stations
and labyrinthine sewage systems.
Grange has now put her pictures
in a book and plans to deliver first
edition copies by hand to customers
all over the world.

using the exchange rate of the day of the

deal. Again, I recommend using oanda.
com to find the appropriate rate. The IRS
rules say that your purchase price should
also be calculated using the exchange rate
on the day it took place. This means you
can be lucky and have a reduced gain or
increased loss, part of which is exchange
rate changes and nothing to do with how
much you really made. Unfortunately, there
are also the opposite occasions, where a
sterling loss turns into a dollar gain simply
because of the exchange rates used.
The form that does ask for the exchange
rate you used is the 8938, the one on
which you put down details of your foreign
accounts and assets. This is where it all
becomes even more unreal than normal!
When you have determined your highest
balance during the year, you transfer this
into dollars, not using the exchange rate on
that day but using the exchange rate at the
end of the year (the second exchange rate
shown above). So the figure you put on
the form probably bears no relation to any
dollar amount you actually had!
One could spend a long time looking the
logic behind this, but its probably better to
use the December 31 exchange rate and
get on with life!

SINCE this is the time of year when Im not

the only person sorting through receipts
and records to put together tax return
information, I thought Id go through some
basics about preparing UK income for a
US tax return.
Just to get the starting-point clear, if
youre a US citizen or green card holder or
a visa-holder who is resident in the US, you
need to declare your worldwide income on
your US return. It doesnt matter whether
or not you bring the money into the US, it
should still be included on your 1040!
If you are claiming that some income is
not taxable in the US because of the US/UK
tax treaty, you must include a form 8833
with your return, which puts the IRS on
notice that youve received it and theyre
not getting tax on it!
If you have UK income that is paid a
number of times a year, for example, a
pension or dividends, you can use the
average annual exchange rate to transfer
the pounds into dollars. You dont have to
use this rate you can use the daily rate
(oanda.com is good for this) instead. What
you cant do is use the daily rate when its
better for you and the average rate when
it isnt consistency of approach is what
were after here!.
This will become even more important
from 2014 onwards, when the IRS will
have information from the UK about large
UK accounts who knows what exchange
rate they will use, or how much variation
they will accept before raising questions?
A capital transaction should be declared

KEEPING UP WITH BRITAINS FAVOURITE SOAP OPERAS

CORONATION STREET lost one of its best

characters this month. After 16 years playing
Hayley Cropper, actress Julie Hesmondhalgh
left the show. There was no way that Hayley
could have been given an easy way out on the
show. She and Roy were for life, partners for
ever, soul-mates until the end. And so there
was only way for Hayley to leave Coronation
Street, and there wasnt a dry eye in the house
when she did.
After suffering from pancreatic cancer for
some months, Hayley takes her own life this
month. She tells Roy its time for her to go.
But Roys not ready and begs for just another
day. We could start today again, better, he
cries. Tomorrow. Do today again, tomorrow. But Hayley is insistent, she knows the
time is right. And with that, Roy helps her
to the bedroom where she downs a lethal
cocktail, telling Roy he must, under any
circumstances, touch the glass or her drugs
otherwise hell be implicated in her suicide.
At Hayleys funeral, shed requested the
mourners wear a splash of colour and they
do her proud. Seans in a red suit, as is Carla.
There are pink umbrellas, red ties and Tims
in his green and white Weatherfield County
football top. Mary turns up in her flamenco
dress and Norris wears a bow-tie that he wore
when he danced with Hayley. At the humanist
service. the mourners are handed daffodils on
their way in, a symbol to place on Hayleys
flowered coffin as they say their goodbyes.
Carla stands and gives a reading, followed
by Fiz. But when Fiz gets to the point in her
speech about how selfless Hayley was, how
she put others before herself, its too much

for Roy to bear. He interrupts Fiz. People

deserve to know the truth, he said, standing
up to address the gathered crowd. Im sorry,
but they do. The truth the truth is, she was
not perfect. She was flawed. She was real.
She was my light, my beautiful coruscating
light. My life was a dark corner and she came
into it. I could see. I could see the world with
her. I understood life. I understood love. She
was my constant, my comfort, my compass.
Hayley was my truth, without her, I And
then he faltered and could speak no more.
In other news this month, Chesneys
girlfriend Sinead moves in with him. Unfortunately for Chesney, so does Sineads auntie
Beth, Beths son Craig with his pet rat called
Darryl, and auntie Beths boyfriend, Kirk.
Ritas not pleased this month when Gloria
and Dennis get their heads together again to
organise another band night in the Bistro.
Ritas feeling left out and when she puts this
to Dennis he replies that he often feels like a
spare part between her and Norris too.
Nick and Leanne split up and Nick moves
back in with his mum. Gails delighted to have
her golden boy back but Nick cant stand her
fussing over him all of the time. Get a cat!
he tells her. Im allergic to cats, she huffs
back. And Im allergic to you! he replies
before moving back into his flat.
And finally this month, Tracy starts being
more attentive to Amy after shes made jealous when she finds out that Amy is spending
time with Michelle. Worse still, Amy seems
to enjoy being with Michelle too, and Tracy
cant have that. So she spends the night with
Amy watching films on TV. Rob even joins in
too. But just when Tracy thinks shes playing
happy families with Rob and daughter Amy,
she finds out that Rob has kissed Tina. Get
ready to gloat, mam! Tracy tells Deirdre, who
has never liked Rob.

VIOLENCE FROM THE DOCK

Lee Rigby Murderers

Sentenced, One For Life

A MUSLIM extremist was jailed for life

and his accomplice for 45 years February
26 for hacking British soldier Lee Rigby
to death on a London street in a terrorist
killing that shocked the nation.
Michael Adebolajo, 29, and Michael
Adebowale, 22, were dragged from the
dock in the Old Bailey court in London
after they started screaming Allahu akbar (God is greater) at the judge during
the sentencing.
The pair of Muslim converts were
found guilty in December of ploughing
into Rigby with a car before attacking him
with knives in broad daylight outside his
barracks in Woolwich, southeast London,
in May 2013.
Judge Nigel Sweeney ordered Adebolajo to spend the rest of his life behind
bars without the possibility of parole for
killing Rigby, who had previously served
in Afghanistan, and said Adebowale had
to serve a minimum of 45 years.
This was a murder with a terrorist
connection, the judge said, describing the
killing as sickening and pitiless.
He said a whole-life prison term was

a just penalty for Adebolajo, who had

proclaimed his admiration for the AlQaeda terror network, but that the younger
mans lesser role meant he would get a
shorter sentence.
Adebolajo and Adebowale, both Britons
who were raised by Nigerian Christian
families before converting to Islam, said
they had attacked the off-duty soldier to
avenge the deaths of Muslims at the hands
of British troops.
Minutes before the sentencing, Adebolajo started shouting Allahu akbar
and Adebowale called out thats a lie
in response to claims that they had been
radicalised.
Adebolajo was pinned to the ground
before being carried out head first. Adebowale was dragged out. The scuffle lasted
over a minute and was so violent that
protective screens over the dock rocked.
They scuffled with guards before being
carried down to the holding cells and were
not in court to hear their penalties read out.
The fighting was yards from Rigbys
family, some of whom were so upset they
were left crying.

Torvill And Dean Back In Sarajevo After 30 Years

By Aida Cerkez
IT WAS THE first, and so far only, perfect
score in Olympic skating history. And
when Britains Torvill and Dean were
through with their legendary Bolero routine at the Sarajevo Olympics the sport was
changed forever.
Three decades after their gold medalwinning performance of Ravels haunting
masterpiece in 1984, Jayne Torvill, 54, and
Christopher Dean, 55, returned to the ice
February 14, dancing the same routine at
the same rink.
With the Olympics underway in Sochi, the pair said they were honored to
be invited back to skate in an arena they
consider hallowed ground.
We are so honored and humbled to be
invited back to Sarajevo and come back
to the place where our lives changed,
said Dean.
On Valentines Day 30 years ago, the
two became the first dancing pair ever to
receive a perfect six from all judges in a
skating competition.
DESTROYED
The sports hall, Zetra, was destroyed
during the 1992-95 Bosnian war that took
100,000 lives. It was rebuilt in 1999 and
the skaters are there helping to promote the
Youth Olympics that Sarajevo will host in
2017. The city invited the skaters to mark
Olympic anniversary and help raise funds
for a permanent ice rink in preparation of
the Youth games.
Sarajevo was besieged throughout the
war by Bosnian Serb forces who shelled
and sniped daily, killing over 11,000
people in the city. The enemies divided the
country into a Serb part and another shared
by Bosniaks and Croats. The border runs
through the former Olympic village, now
a Sarajevo suburb.
Administratively, there are two Sarajevos. Torvill and Deans goodwill performance is playing a symbolic role in healing
divisions: The official invitation is signed
by the citys two mayors and stamped with
their emblems, a rare show of cooperation.
The Olympic site looks very different
decades and one calamitous war later.
The stadium has been repaired but its
surrounded by tombstones of the war dead.
Torvill and Dean said they watched the
tragedy on TV and wondered what had
happened to the wonderful people they
had met in Sarajevo.

Torvill and Dean recreated their

legendary Bolero routine at the Sarajevo
ice rink where they won Gold.
Today we had a very emotional moment, Dean said, choking with emotion.
Regaining his composure, he explained
how the duo had just met the girl who

picked up flowers from the ice before the

two went going out to skate.
To personally hear her story from the
six-year-old girl who picked the flowers
up and the subsequent life afterward and
then today being here with her daughter,
a generation that had gone through some
difficult tragic times and yet now they are
so hopeful and joyful ... that really brought
it home for us today, he said.
Torvill said she often wondered whether
the little girl they had met at the Olympics
was still skating.
When they met the girl now a proud
mom they were in for an emotional surprise: Her daughter was among the young
skaters performing in the gala event.

Scientists Find 800,000-Year-Old Footprints In UK

By Jill Lawless

THEY WERE a British family on a day

out almost a million years ago.
Archaeologists announced in February
that they had discovered human footprints
in England that are between 800,000 and
one million years old the most ancient
found outside Africa, and the earliest evidence of human life in northern Europe.
A team from the British Museum,
Londons Natural History Museum and
Queen Mary college at the University of
London uncovered imprints from up to five
individuals in ancient estuary mud at Happisburgh on the countrys eastern coast.
British Museum archaeologist Nick
Ashton said the discovery recounted in
detail in the journal Plos One was a tangible link to our earliest human relatives.
Preserved in layers of silt and sand
for hundreds of millennia before being
exposed by the tide last year, the prints
give a vivid glimpse of some of our most
ancient ancestors. They were left by a
group, including at least two children and
one adult male. They could have been be
a family foraging on the banks of a river
scientists think may be the ancient Thames,
beside grasslands where bison, mammoth,
hippos and rhinoceros roamed.
University of Southampton archaeology professor Clive Gamble, who was not
involved in the project, said the discovery
was tremendously significant.
TANGIBLE
Its just so tangible, he said. This is
the closest weve got to seeing the people.
When I heard about it, it was like
hearing the first line of (William Blakes
hymn) Jerusalem And did those feet, in
ancient time, walk upon Englands mountains green? Well, they walked upon its
muddy estuary.
The researchers said the humans who

The footprint find will form part of an
exhibition, Britain: One Million Years of
the Human Story, opening at the Natural
History Museum later in February.

left the footprints may have been related

to Homo antecessor, or pioneer man,
whose fossilized remains have been found
in Spain. That species died out about
800,000 years ago.
Ashton said the footprints are between
800,000 as a conservative estimate
and one million years old, at least 100,000
years older than scientists earlier estimate
of the first human habitation in Britain.
Thats significant because 700,000 years
ago, Britain had a warm, Mediterraneanstyle climate. The earlier period was much
colder, similar to modern-day Scandinavia.
Natural History Museum archaeologist
Chris Stringer said that 800,000 or 900,000
years ago Britain was the edge of the
inhabited world.
This makes us rethink our feelings
about the capacity of these early people,
that they were coping with conditions
somewhat colder than the present day,
he said.
ADAPTATIONS
Maybe they had cultural adaptations
to the cold we hadnt even thought were
possible 900,000 years ago. Did they wear
clothing? Did they make shelters, wind-

Scientists dated the footprints by studying their geological position and from
nearby fossils of long-extinct animals
including mammoth, ancient horse and
early vole.
John McNabb, director of the Center for
the Archaeology of Human Origins at the
University of Southampton who was not
part of the research team said the use of
several lines of evidence meant the dating
is pretty sound.
Once uncovered, the perishable prints
were recorded using sophisticated digital
photography to create 3-D images in which
its possible to discern arches of feet, and
even toes.
Isabelle De Groote, a specialist in
ancient human remains at Liverpool John
Moores University who worked on the
find, said that from the pattern of the prints,
the group of early humans appeared to
be pottering around, perhaps foraging
for food.
She said it wasnt too much of a stretch
to call it a family.

These individuals traveling together,

To B Or Not To B
AS WORKING visas become increasingly
difficult to get through the US Embassy in
London, I am receiving quite a few calls from
people looking into the B visa option.
The B visa (B1/B2) as it is applied to UK
citizens, is for business persons or visitors
who need to remain in the United States for
longer than 90 days and for up to six months.
The visa itself is generally valid for a five year
period. In the most recent past, when a visitor
presented a B visa to the inspecting officer
upon arrival in the United States, the officer
generally would grant the person an I-94 valid
for up to 180 days. That is, the B visa holder
could remain in the United States for up to
six months. Further, a B visa holder could
extend their authorized stay for an additional
six months while in the United States, and
could even change their status to another visa
category without leaving the United States.
Unfortunately, after 9/11, the government
has revisited the B visa regulations and now
instructs inspecting officers to authorize an
individuals stay for only as long as the officer determines it will take for the visitor to
complete his trip. In many cases, this turns
out to be only thirty days. Thus, even if you
arrive in Los Angeles with a five year B visa,
unless you have a schedule and supporting
documents to explain the reason for your visit

and the reason why you need to be here for

more than thirty days, chances are you will
only be authorized to remain in the United
States for thirty days. Trying to verbally
explain your reasons to the inspecting officer
upon arrival will probably not be good enough
you will need documentation. Please note,
you can still get a six month authorized stay,
but you should be prepared to provide the
inspecting officer with supporting documents
to support your request. However, you will
never be granted a five year stay regardless of
the validity dates on your visa. The maximum
amount of time you can be granted by law
is six months.
On another note, if you plan to try and stay
in the US through a change of status petition
your application may be denied based on
fraud if it is filed within the first 30 days after
you entered the country. That is, the CIS may
view your initial entry as fraudulent if you
apply to change to another category within
thirty days after entry into the United States
with a B visa.

Increase Of Vehicles
Brought On Birth Of
Britains Motorways
ITS BEEN over 30 years since I consistently
drove a car around Britain and as I remember
that traffic congestion was, at times, pretty
bad even back then. I assumed it must be a
lot worse these days, although on my last
few recent trips back home I didnt notice
much difference than it was back in the
70s. Even taking into account the dramatic
increase in the number of cars over the years
on British roads.
Here are some facts on the number of cars
registered in the UK:
1955-three million
1960-seven million
1970-15 million
1980-20 million
Today there are about 29 million registered
vehicles in the UK. For such a small island
it is a tribute to the Ministry of Transport for
planning a road network throughout the nation
that can accommodate this amount of traffic.
It was the birth of the Motorway system
that first contributed to this easing of traffic
throughout Britain. It all started in 1958 albeit
the planning started as early as 1937. The
Preston Bypass was the first of these new
motorways, a sort of experiment for what was
to follow. Why Preston? With a population of

around 185,000 or so in 1958 this seemed

like an unlikely spot to start Britains new
motorway system, but looking at the Road
Plan, it was quite obvious why. Preston was
the point where traffic from the Manchester,
Liverpool, Blackburn and Cheshire (and
beyond) directions all merge to head northwards into the Lake District or west towards
Blackpool. Preston was the only place where
any A-class road crossed the River Ribble
that separated northern Lancashire from
southern Lancashire. These geographical
realisations meant that all long-distance
traffic on the western side of England was
obligated to pass straight through the town.
So, in 1953, the Ministry announced that
the Preston Bypass would commence in the
1956-57 financial year, and at the same time
made reference to it being a guinea-pig
for all the motorways that followed, both
in standards and in construction. It was
designed for a speed of 70mph, although
there was no speed limit for the first few
years of operation. There was, however, a
disagreement between the Ministry and the
engineer James Drake regarding the width
of the road: the Ministry wanted two lanes
in each direction, whilst Drake wanted three.
Eventually, a compromise was worked out
where there was two lanes provided, but the
central reservation was wide enough to allow
an extra lane to be provided easily.
The Preston Bypass opened on December
5, 1958, making it the first motorway in
Britain. As befitting its status as the very
first motorway, it was opened by the Prime
Minister, Harold Macmillan. A large plaque
was unveiled (and still exists today) at the
A59 junction although its modern placement manages to be relatively unobtrusive!
The Ministrys insistence on two lanes in each
direction backfired slightly when the third lane
was added in the mid-1960s, though the
compromise of the extra-wide central reservation, as planned, meant the conversion
was easily achieved although there were no
hard shoulders through bridges. Meanwhile,
the bypass was being joined to the rest of the
new M6, with the section to the Lancaster
Bypass to the north opening in 1964, and the
south already being opened in 1963.
But, even with three lanes in each direction the Preston Bypass once again became
a bottle neck over the River Ribble Bridge
during the 1980s. A study showed that the
Bypass should be widened once again, this
time to four lanes in each direction between
the M61 and M55 junctions. As part of the
work, the entire carriageway was reconstructed, and in some cases moved slightly

Page 9

off the original route. All the bridges over the

motorway were removed, and so todays
Preston Bypass is almost completely different
to the original with only some small areas
being original to its predecessor.
Here are some interesting facts about the
unique and great Motorways of Britain:
The M6 was one of the earliest and it
is also the longest at 232 miles, it extends
from Catthorpe (junction 19 on the M1) to the
A74M in Gretna Green, Scotland which itself
joins the M74 to Glasgow. There have been
rumors that the M74 may be renumbered to
M6, which would then make the M6 more
than 360 miles in length.
The second longest Motorway is the M1
at 193.5 miles and this runs from Londons
A406 North Circular road to Leeds where it
joins the A1. This famous Motorway has the
distinction of having the very first Motorway
service station which were unique in Britain
located at Watford Gap, just north of London,
it opened on the February 2, 1960. A second
one located further north opened soon after
at Newport Pagnell.
A candidate for the widest Motorway
could have been the section of the M6 at the
River Ribble in Preston, but, ironically, it is still
a bottle neck even today its not however as
the wide (most lanes) is a section of the M61
in Greater Manchester which boasts 17 lanes.
As for the shortest Motorway in Britain,
there are a number of them which are one
mile or less in length. There have been
conflicting claims on this subject, but it now
appears that the A635(M), which is joined
to the A57(M), Mancunian Way and runs to
the A6, is the shortest at about 328 yards
or 300 meters long. There is no sign on this
Motorway depicting its name, and, I suppose,
no time for motorists to take it in.
Not surprisingly the M25 (London Orbital
Motorway) is the busiest Motorway in the
UK, the section between junctions 12 and
15 carrying on average 180,000 to 200,000
vehicles, and in typical peak periods traffic
can reach above 200,000, similarly on other sections too, such
as junctions 15 to 16 and 12 to 9.
The longest uninterrupted
length between junctions exists
on the southbound M11 between
junction 10 and junction 8 and is
17 miles, (junction 9 exists only
on the northbound side).
The most complicated British
Motorway interchange is situated
at Gravelly Hill north of Birmingham, on the Midland Link Motorway section of the M6. Popularly known as
Spaghetti Junction, it has 18 routes on six
levels, together with a diverted canal and
river. It consists of 26,000 tons of steel,
250,000 tons of concrete and 300,000 tons
of earth, and cost 8.2m to construct.
The Motorway traffic system has come
a long way since 1958, there are now 50
Motorways throughout Britain plus 18 more
upgraded A-class roads to Motorway standards. Traffic jams still occur only too often
but just think what it would be like without this
magnificent feat of Motorway engineering.
And, just for the record: The worst recorded traffic jam in Britain was, as you might
have guessed, on the M6 from the Preston
(still a bottleneck) Bypass to Carnforth, Lancashire on April 17, 1987; it involved 50,000
vehicles and about 200,000 people, all at a
complete standstill.

IT CAN be confusing for the non-Brit to

understand what we mean as puddings
which refers to dessert here. However
it doesnt just refer to the creamy sweet
cold pudding in the US, but a variety of
different sweet afters of all sorts. And we
Brits have always had a sweet tooth. When
I first came here I always made a dessert
after the meal as that was what I was
used to, however in my husbands family
it was usually only special meals such as
in the holidays when it was served. In the
latter years as we had to start watching
our waistlines, I used to just end the meal
with some fresh fruit, but I do love a good
sweet afters!! Some readers also may be
confused with the term sweet trolley in Mr
Morleys quote. This refers to dining in a
usually high class hotel or restaurant, and
is still to be seen in Britain. I do have recollections of being treated out where there
was a sweets trolley, and able to look over

was used like a spice. In the 1700s the use
of sugar increased as it was then cheaper,
due to being grown in the British colonies
etc. However the heyday of the English
pudding tradition really came through in the
Victorian times, when many of the bread
based puds such as summer pudding,
apple Charlotte etc and of course the bread
and butter pudding came into favour, it also
was always economical and a good way to
use up extra bread, (but I do recommend
using a good quality bread). I recently had
a request for bread pudding, which is not
to be confused with the lighter bread and
butter pudding with a custard sauce. (I will
feature that in the near future also)
Bread pudding is a lot denser, and usually served in slices with a custard sauce
or cream. I remember a customer in our
former tea room commented when I served
it that it was a good as he remembered it
years ago. His family would like it even
better the next day with a good cuppa. I
hope you enjoy my version
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Butter a
casserole dish or loaf pan. Cut crusts off
the bread and break into small pieces in a
medium bowl. Pour the milk over the bread
and let stand about 30 minutes or until well
soaked. Add melted butter, sugar, mixed
spice and beaten egg. Using a fork beat
mixture up until no lumps remain, then stir
in the dried fruit. Spread into prepared baking dish and sprinkle with nutmeg. Bake for
1 hour or until set. Serve sliced with custard
sauce or cream (Yield 4 servings)

Sienna Miller Testifies At UK Phone Hacking Trial

By Jill Lawless
ACTRESS Sienna Miller said last month
that she had a brief encounter with James
Bond star Daniel Craig, but insisted a British tabloid misconstrued the nature of the
relationship based on a hacked voicemail
message.
Miller told Britains phone-hacking trial
that she probably did leave a message for
Craig that ended I love you. But she
said she always signed off to family and
friends that way.
The thing thats been slightly misconstrued about this voicemail message is the
fact that I said I love you and that this was
some incredibly important declaration of
love, Miller said.
I had always ended my phone calls to
Daniel I love you; it was a declaration
of friendship.
Miller testified by video link to the London court from New Orleans at the trial of
two former News of the World editors, and
five others, over phone hacking and other
wrongdoing at the now-defunct tabloid.
BRIBERY
The defendants deny a variety of charges, including phone hacking, bribery and
obstructing a police investigation.
These days of the trial had focused
on evidence from Dan Evans, a former
reporter who says he hacked Craigs
phone and used the I love you message
as the basis of 2005 stories about an affair
between Craig and Miller. She was then
dating actor Jude Law, while Craig was in
a relationship with film producer Satsuki
Mitchell.

Evans has
pleaded guilty
to phone hacking, and says
top editors
were aware
of his actions. Defense
lawyers have
questioned his
credibility as
a witness, suggesting the affair story could have come
from sources other than phone hacking,
such as associates of Miller and Law.
Miller, 32, said Evans description of
her voicemail for Craig rang true, and
she could see why it would have caused
excitement among journalists who heard it.
EVIDENCE
Miller, who sat beside an FBI agent as
she gave evidence from the United States,
said she had absolutely never courted

media attention and regretted that her

relationship with Craig her co-star in the
2004 movie Layer Cake had been turned
into a titillating piece of information for
the press.
Whether or not I was in a relationship
with Daniel Craig at the time, it was a very
brief encounter, she said. He was my
best friend. My saying I love you was
nothing new.
After Miller finished her evidence,
judge John Saunders thanked her and said:
I am very sorry what has gone on in this
court and reported in the press has caused
you distress.
Owner Rupert Murdoch closed the
News of the World in 2011 after details
emerged of the scale of its snooping on
celebrities, politicians and others in the
public eye.
The same year Miller accepted 100,000
to settle a phone-hacking lawsuit against
the newspaper.

IRS Requires Ex-Pat Investors UK Telly Available For Intrepid

Living Stateside
To Self-Report Foreign Income HAVING tellyBrits
you enjoy watching isnt theyve created a service that allows you

IT IS difficult to gauge how much effect

the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act
(FATCA) will have on individual ExPat US taxpayer investors. Since the
legislation was enacted in 2010, there has
been great effort to ensure that all foreign
financial institutions (FFIs) were aware of
their responsibilities and the penalties for
non-compliance but very little focusing on
the individual investor.
The IRS has made it clear that FATCA
is not intended to raise revenue from the
FFIs but rather to provide the IRS with
information about US taxpayers, and all
their overseas assets and income.
It is hoped that all US taxpayers are
aware that broadly, they will either have
their personal and foreign investment
details reported to the US or a 30 percent
withholding tax will be applied to any US
source income from January 1, 2014. There
is no option to choose the withholding tax.
For example, the agreement implementing FATCA with the UK, has amended
the UK rules regarding Data Protection
meaning that the investor does not have
to consent to having his information disclosed but only has the right to see what
information has been disclosed.
All Ex-Pat investors will need to make

sure that they are following the increased

US self reporting requirements for their
total foreign financial assets and as part of
this, the statute of limitation for IRS audits
of returns listing foreign sourced income
has been extended from three to six years.
Unintended non-compliance may result in
a minimum $10,000 fine and wilful noncompliance may result in prosecution, so
it is imperative that every Ex-Pat checks
their personal position to ensure that their
US returns will match the information
provided directly to the IRS from the FFIs
It is estimated that there is a surprisingly significant number of Ex-Pats who
have not updated their residence address
with the FFIs because they also have a UK
contact address, and all individual investors should check with their FFIs that they
are holding correct information for them.
It is likely that many US taxpayers may
be unaware of the effect these rules may
have on them and may need specialist
advice to minimise the impact.

UK Bans French Comedian From

Entering Britain Anelka Controversy
BRITAINS Home Secretary has
banned French comedian and provocateur Dieudonne MBala MBala
from entering the United Kingdom.
He had previously announced plans
to visit Britain in a show of support
for soccer player Nicolas Anelka, who
faces a ban for mimicking the comics
quenelle salute during a match. The
gesture is considered by many to be
anti-Semitic.
A Home Office statement issued
last month said Dieudonne is subject
to an exclusion order issued under
Home Secretary Theresa Mays power
to keep someone out of Britain for

public policy or
public security
reasons. He has
been convicted
multiple times
for inciting racial hatred or
anti-Semitism.
The Football
Association has
charged Anelka over the
pose, struck
after he scored
a goal in a game in December. He is
contesting the charges.

London Theater Box Office Boomed In 2013

MORE PEOPLE than ever attended London theaters in 2013, with ticket income rising
for a 10th straight year, despite Britains fragile economic recovery.
Figures released last month show there were more than 14.5 million visits to theaters
in 2013, up four percent from 2012.
Box office revenue rose even more by 11 percent to more than 585m.
Industry group the Society of London Theatre, which compiled data from 52 venues,
said sales were boosted by newly opened musicals, including The Book of Mormon,Once
and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
The one blot on a strong year was the December 19 collapse of part of a ceiling at the
Apollo Theatre during a performance. Almost 80 people were hurt, seven seriously, and
the venue remains closed.

Parking Space Sold ... For Just 400,000

CLOSE to the Royal Albert Hall, and

underground, a parking spot in London
sold for 400,000 last month.
Granted, there is space for two cars,
but still not a bad price for the seller for
something that costs over two times the

cost of an average home in Britain.

Just a short stroll away, in the Kensington area, is a NCP car park which costs a
not tiny 35.10 a day, but still works out
that with 400,000 you could afford to park
there for next 31 years.

Stings Musical Finds

SINGER-SONGWRITER Stings new

community in northeast England will
start performances September 30 at the
Neil Simon Theatre. Opening night will
be October 26.
Before coming to Broadway, The Last
Ship will make its world premiere next
summer at Chicagos Bank of America
Theatre.
The story centers on a man from a seafaring town who travels the world for 14
years only to return to find the shipyards

Last Ship with some songs that may make

Killing Suspect Fails

To Block Extradition
From UK
MURDER suspect Shrien Dewani has lost
his bid to block his extradition to South
Africa, where hes accused of arranging
the murder of his new wife, Anni, during
a honeymoon trip in 2010.
The case has drawn attention in both
countries, and has been dragged out by
legal wrangling in Britain over whether
Dewani is fit to be removed from the
country.
Dewani denies the charges, and his lawyers argue that he suffers post-traumatic
stress and depression and should not be
extradited.
Britains High Court last month approved Dewanis removal so long as South
African authorities could give a guarantee
as to how long he would be kept there
without trial.
The court had been told the South Africans were willing to do so.

UK Nuclear Alert:
Naturally Occurring
Radiation
ELEVATED radiation levels detected last
month at the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing
plant in northwestern England were caused
by naturally occurring background radon,
not by any faults at the aging plant, the
operating company said.
Only essential workers were asked to
report for work as safety teams worked to
pinpoint the cause of the elevated radiation,
in the northern end of the sprawling site
the largest nuclear site in Europe.
Sellafield Ltd said its on-site monitors
detected unusual activity overnight, leading
it to reduce staffing levels as a precaution.
The plant was never shut down and there
was no evacuation. The company said there
had been no risk to public safety.
Nuclear reprocessing involves separating
uranium and plutonium from nuclear waste
for reuse as fuel, and treating the waste for
storage. Reprocessing has taken place at
Sellafield for more than 50 years.
The complex has long been targeted by
anti-nuclear campaigners who have pointed
to a number of leaks and other incidents
there over the years.

Authorities
Reportedly Arrest
2 In Rolls Probe
BRITAINS Press Association says UK
authorities have arrested two people as part
of an investigation into the dealings in Asia
of the engine maker Rolls-Royce PLC.
The Serious Fraud Office says two men
were arrested after search warrants were
executed in London last month. The SFO
did not give further details about the arrests
and the company declined to comment.
The arrests come after the fraud office
announced in December that it had opened
a criminal investigation into bribery and
corruption allegations at the defense and
aerospace group.
Rolls Royce disclosed in 2012 that the
SFO asked the company to investigate
allegations of bribery and corruption in
Indonesia and China. The company hired
a law firm to examine the allegations and
handed the file to the SFO.

Midnight House
By Alex Berenson
This is the second book about CIA agent
John Wells. (I havent read the first just
discovered this author).
EARLY ONE morning a retired CIA operative
is shot and killed in the street. Later that night
a former Army Ranger is gunned down in his
doorway. The following day Agent Wells gets
a call to report to Langley Now!
The victims were part of a ten-member
interrogation squad from a secret base
called The Midnight House. They have been
tasked to get information out of terrorists by
whatever means
necessary but,
of course, the
team doesnt
exist if anyone
asks. The story
weaves in and out
and around. No
one knows anything and anyone
that might is too
scared to talk. As
John and his partner Shafer begin to put
together the pieces they discover that the
team psychiatrist a woman committed
suicide. They talk to her husband but he
is so distraught they really cant get any
information out of him except that she was
so upset about the way things were done
that she couldnt take it anymore. What the
heck was going on at that base? Shafer and
John finally find a file with numbers in it for
12 people the prisoners had code numbers
but they have been told there were only ten.
As they dig deeper they discover that there
were, in fact, 12 prisoners but something so
bad happened that the only thing left to do
was cover it up by getting someone very
high up and with the skills to totally erase
those two numbers from the system.
Wells makes travels to Cairo and makes
contact with the brother of one of the prisoners and gets some fascinating information
he almost gets caught in the process but
who is chasing him? The terrorists or his
people? And if its the US Government why?
Is he getting too close? To what? How far up
the ladder is this cover up? Is what the boy
told him true?
They take their information back to their
contact at the CIA and are told that they are
wrong and to stop looking into the situation.
Right tell these two rebels to stop? Not a
chance. As they dig even deeper the water
gets even muddier but that makes them even
more curious and the more they are told to
stand down the more they want to dig.
He winds up back in the middle east with
a team on a mission to get a laptop left in a
small house with a family that doesnt even
know its there cemented into their floor in
one of the most dangerous neighborhoods
there! They get it but what they have to go
through to retrieve it is unbelievable!
When all is said and done they unravel the
mystery buried laptops, payoffs, interrogations, dead bodies, crazy people, cover ups
are all involved. They are threatened by the
very people theyve worked for for years but
they wont give up.
Is a roller coaster ride and if you arent
skeptical or distrusting of the government
before you read this you certainly will be
after! An absolutely wonderful read! Enjoy!

FOOTBALL fans: Your cups runneth

over.
Prime Minister David Cameron has
stepped in to overrule a government department that said bars couldnt stay open
late during Englands opening match
against Italy at the World Cup in Brazil.
The British Beer and Pub Association
had asked for a nationwide extension to
licensing hours for the June 14 game,
which starts at 11pm British time.
Many British pubs close at 11pm,
though some have licenses to open later.
The Home Office said no, but Cameron
tweeted last month: I have ordered a rethink on pub opening times for Englands
World Cup games.
The government can relax the rules on
occasions of exceptional international,
national or local significance, as they
did during the 2011 wedding of Prince
William and Kate Middleton.

McLaren Hires Boullier

As Racing Director
FORMULA ONE team McLaren has hired
Eric Boullier as its new racing director,
less than a week after the Frenchman left
as team principal of Lotus.
The appointment of Boullier continues
the behind-the-scenes restructuring at
McLaren, who recently brought back
former team principal Ron Dennis as its
new chief executive.
McLaren is looking to bounce back
from its worst season in F1 since 1980 after
failing to make a single podium.
Boullier says in a statement that Im
both eager and determined to play an active
part. To bring about the changes that will
deliver success.

Flower Steps Down As

England Team Director

ANDY FLOWER has stepped down as

England team director following the Ashes
whitewash in Australia.
The ECB confirmed Flowers departure
in a statement last month despite his earlier
announcement that he would continue in
his role alongside captain Alastair Cook.
Flower said following the recent very
disappointing Ashes defeat it is clear to me
that this is now time for England cricket,
led by Alastair Cook, to rebuild with a new
set of values and goals.
Flowers five years as coach have seen
many bright spots, including three successive Ashes series victories.

Dibaba Runs FastestEver 2 Miles Indoors

GENZEBE DIBABA produced her third
record performance of the month February
16, with the Ethiopian racing the fastest
two miles at the Birmingham Grand Prix.
Dibaba eased over the line in 9min
48secs indoors in central England, more
than 20 seconds ahead of her rivals to break
compatriot Meseret Defars world-best
mark from 2009 by almost six seconds.
The IAAF said it wasnt a world record as
there are no official records for two miles.
In the middle of the race I felt a bit
weak and tired, but with the help of the
crowd and all the buzzing I was able to gain
momentum and get the record, Dibaba
said on the IAAF website.
Dibaba had already broken the indoor
1,500 and 3,000-meter world records last
month as she prepared for the world indoor championships this month in Sopot,
Poland.
HOPING
Im hoping to win a gold again at the
world indoors, thats the plan, Dibaba
said. I have a 1500m gold from last time,
so this time I want the 3000m.
British sprinter James Dasaolu will
be hoping he is fit for the championships
after appearing to injure himself while
upstaging Nesta Carter of Jamaica to win
the 60 meters.
Dasaolu left the Birmingham track on
a wheelchair with an ice pack on his left
hamstring.
It is a potential blow for Dasaolu, who
won his heat in 6.47secs the fastest
time this year, before winning the final
in 6.50secs. That was 0.03 seconds ahead
of Carter, while Kim Collins of St Kitts
and Nevis was third followed by British
sprinter Dwain Chambers.

Britain Ends Olympic Funding

For Basketball Teams

THE GOVERNMENT last month cut funding for the countrys Olympic basketball
program ahead of the 2016 Games.
Basketball received 8.6m in the four
years before the 2012 London Olympics
where Britain qualified as hosts.
But UK Sport, which distributes money
from the government and National Lottery, has decided basketball doesnt offer
a realistic prospect of producing a medal
in Rio de Janeiro.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver said

last month the London Olympics were
a lost opportunity and questioned
why the government wasnt backing
basketball.
Roger Moreland, performance chairman at British Basketball, is aghast at
the decision to strip funding, explaining:
We are still on the road to Rio but we
now have to qualify for EuroBasket 2015
with our hands tied behind our back.

Collingwood To Be
England Assistant Coach

TRIPLE ASHES winner Paul Collingwood has been named Englands

assistant coach to Ashley Giles for the
forthcoming tour of the West Indies and
the World Twenty20 in Bangladesh.
The former England all-rounder captained England to the World Twenty20
title in 2010.
England and Wales Cricket Board
managing director Paul Downton said:
I am delighted that Paul has agreed
to join the England coaching staff for
the trips to the West Indies and Bangladesh.
An embarrassing 5-0 Ashes series loss
left England in tatters, with emblematic
batsman Kevin Pietersen being axed in
a bid to rebuild trust within the team.
The ECB also announced earlier that
former England seam bowler Angus
Fraser had been appointed to Englands
selection panel.

Scotland Wins ICC

Scotland made 285-5 batting first in the
February 1 final and Swapnil Patel not out
on 99 as the UAE made 244-9 in reply.
Both teams had already qualified for the
World Cup by making the final, and will
join the top nations at the tournament in
Australia and New Zealand over February
and March, 2015.
Scotland will play in Group A with New
Zealand, Australia, England, Sri Lanka,
Bangladesh and Afghanistan while UAE
will play in Group B with India, Pakistan,

Andy Murray Steers Britain To

Davis Cup Victory In San Diego

ANDY MURRAYS dominating influence was

the deciding factor as Britain made tennis
history at Petco Park in San Diego, California,
January 31-February 2, where a British victory over the USA put them in the Davis Cup
quarter-finals for the first time in 28 years.
The Wimbledon champion put Britain on the
right track with a three set win over Donald
Young, while James Ward fought his heart
out from two sets behind to win his encounter
with Sam Querrey 1-6, 7-6 (7-3) 3-6, 6-4,
6-1. American brothers, Bob and Mike Bryan,
have 16 Grand Slam double titles under their
belt and an upset was unlikely. They beat
Colin Fleming and Dom Inglot 6-2, 5-3, 3-6,
6-1. The reverse singles on the final day saw
Andy Murray grab victory with a 7-6 (7-5)
6-7 (3-7) 6-1, 6-3 over Sam Querrey, for an
unassailable 3-1 lead. Its the first time Britain has beaten the USA since 1935, leaving
non-playing captain Leon Smith, absolutely
delighted. Britain faces Italy in the last eight.
British number two Dan Evans, did not
make the Davis Cup squad, but made his
first ATP semi-finals at the Zagreb Indoors
in Croatia, before losing 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 to
Tommy Haas. The 23-year-old from Solihull
in the west midlands, still looking for his
first ATP final, did overcome the Czech, Jan
Hajek, and then Michael Berrer and Philip
Kohlschreiber, both from Germany At the
Federation Cup qualifier in Hungary, Laura
Watson was absent through injury. Skipper
Judy Murrays team of Heather Watson Johanna Jonta, Tara Moore and Jocelyn Rae,
beat Latvia 2-1, but lost to both Romania
and Hungary by the same score-line. Britain
finished third in the qualifier and did not
progress to the next round. Heather Watson
won all three of her single contests.
Andy Murray took his talents to Rotterdam, for the ABN AMRO World Tennis
tournament where Marin Cilic dispatched
the Scot 6-3, 6-4, in the quarter-finals.
Murray had earlier beat Dominic Thiem and
Edouard Roger Vasselin in straight sets.
Same weekend, Heather Watson won an ITF
event in Midland, Michigan, beating Ksenia

Boxing And Golf

American Tony Thompson, David Price
(16-2) relinquished his British heavyweight
crown and looked to get away to restart his
shattered dreams. The 30-year-old Liverpool
heavyweight got back in the driving seat late
January, with a first round knockout of Istvan

supposed to fight Kazakhstans Konstantin

Top heavyweights Dereck Chisora (20-4)
and Tyson Fury (22-0) won their bouts at
the Copper Box Arena in London, February

them looks likely in the near future. European
champion Chisora pulled a unanimous decision over American, Kevin Johnson (29-5-1),
while former British champion Tyson Fury,
put Minnesotas Joey Abell (29-8) on the
canvas four times before the ref halted it in
the fourth.
Rory McIIroy got the Dubai Desert Classic
off to a gangbuster start with a nine under

Beckham Makes It Official-New

MLS Franchise In Miami

David Beckham had a full day in south

Florida, February 5, were he publically announced his plans for a MLS expansion
team in Miami. Greeted by Mayor Carlos
Gimenez, Britains soccer icon answered a
host of questions about his Miami Beckham
United enterprise, and at a crowded reception
at the John L Knight Conference Center, he
schmoozed a big room of Miamis wheelers and dealers. MLS Commissioner Don
Garber, was on hand for the occasion with
a gentle reminder that the Miami franchise
was contingent on a new 25,000 capacity
stadium being built. Later, Beckham attended
the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce
and Visitors Centre, where it was standing
room only. He visited the Kendall Soccer
Park to meet some 300 youngsters, but it got
quite chaotic, and he found himself hustled
away by local police before his visit really
got under way. The kids were very disappointed. The area of Floridahad already seen
two previous soccer franchises, namely,
the Fort Lauderdale Strikers (1977-83)
and the Miami Fusion (1998-2001), though
both played in Fort Lauderdale. Conventional
wisdom is that Miami will pull bigger crowds,
noting the 71,000 who recently gathered
for a Brazil-Honduras encounter. Beckham
assured skeptical politicians that, We dont
want public money, we will fund the stadium
ourselves. If things go well, its expected
the new team and stadium could be ready
for action in 2017.
The United States beat fellow World Cup
qualifier South Korea at Carson, California,
Febuary 1, where goals by Chris Wondolowski in the 4th and 60th minutes gave
Jurgen Klinsmanns men a 2-0 win, and
the teams 13th consecutive home victory.
Earlier, the Asians were beaten 4-0 by Mexico
at the Aztec Stadium

European Soccer

February 18-19,saw the last sixteen in the

knockout round of the Champions League
commence with Manchester Citys cautionary start, played directly into Barcelonas
hands at the Etihad. Martin Demichelis
brought down Lionel Messi in the 18 yard
box, was sent off, and Messi put the penalty
away in the 54th minute. Dani Alves scored
in the final minute for a 2-0 win for the
Spaniards, leaving City somewhat shaken
by the whole experience Apprehension
and uncertainty was evident at the Emirates
Stadium too, where World and European
club champions Bayern Munich, faced an
Arsenal side emitting early enthusiasm.
But Mesut Ozil missed a penalty in the 7th
minute, then the Gunners goalie Wojciech
Szczensy got sent off in the 37th minute, and
Bayerns David Alaba missed a penalty too,
five minutes before the break. A tremendous
shot just outside the box by Toni Kroos put
Bayern ahead, then Thomas Mller made it
2-0, two minutes from the whistle.
The last 32 knockout round in the Europa
League Cup, first legs February 20, produced
a sparse crowd in the Ukraine for Tottenham,
where social upheaval has engulfed the
nation. Spurs kept Dnipro at bay until the
81st minute when Konoplyanka, broke the
deadlock, giving the host a 1-0 win. Coach
Tim Sherwood called the pitch a disgrace.
Meanwhile it was gridlock at the Liberty
Stadium, where Swansea City concluded
with a goalless draw with Napoli.

FA Cup

The fifth round of the FA Cup, February

15-16-17, saw a couple of big clubs get
knocked out by other big clubs. Manchester
City beat Chelsea 2-0 at the Etihad, and Arsenal topped Liverpool 2-1 at the Emirates.
A Craig Gardner goal four minutes after the
break gave Sunderland the only goal of the
game against Southampton, while Cup holders Wigan, progressed with a 2-1 victory in
Wales over Cardiff City. Everton conquered
Swansea 3-1 at Goodison Park. Division One
strugglers Sheffield United who have already
put Aston Villa and Fulham out, moved to the

sixth round after a 3-1 win at Bramall Lane

over Nottingham Forest, when Chris Porter
scored twice in the last minute.

Scottish Soccer

The semi-finals of the Scottish league Cup,

February 1-2, saw Aberdeen reach their first
cup final for fourteen years after a 4-0 win
over St Johnstone. Jonny Hayes provided a
brace that put the Dons on the way. The other
semi-final got complicated, after Inverness
CT had two players sent off and the match
with Heart of Midlothian ended 2-2, with no
goals in extra-time. Jamie Hamill hit two for
Hearts within two minutes, and Greg Tansey
and then Nick Ross, in the final minute netted for the Caley Thistle. Inverness won the
penalty shootout 4-2.
The fifth round of the Scottish Cup,
February 7-8-9, witnessed Rangers roar
pass Dunfermline at the Ibrox, where a
Dean Shiels hat-trick pushed them to a 4-0
win. Celtic had gone twelve consecutive
domestic home games without conceding
a goal at Parkhead, but Aberdeen brought
that record to an end, leaving Neil Lennon
in a deep state of unrest as the Dons came
away 2-1 winners. Anthony Stokes put
the Hoops ahead in the ninth minute, while
Russell Anderson leveled it seven minutes
from the break. Peter Pawlett hit the winner
in the 50th minute, while Celtic desperately
attempted to turn the game around. Upset at
Easter Road, where Raith Rovers won 3-2
against Hibernian, after a winner by Grant
Anderson in the 63rd minute turned the tide.
Dumbarton, St Johnstone, Inverness CT,

and Albion Rovers made it to the quarterfinals too, while Dundee Utds 2-1 win over
St Mirren, leaves them as the lone premier
side left in the competition.

Sporting Passings

It been over fifty years since Preston North

End played in the top tier of English football,
but ask Deepdale fans about the glory days,
and the name Tom Finney comes up every
time. Born within the very neighbourhood of
Prestons home stadium, the former plumber
could walk to home matches within a few
minutes from his front door. He made 433 appearances for Preston between 1946-1960,
scored 187 goals, and was capped 76 times
for England, scoring thirty times. He spent his
whole career at Preston, where a move from
Italian side Palermo in 1952, was quickly
squashed by the chairman of the board.
He was awarded the OBE in 1961, and was
knighted in 1998. Sir Tom Finney was 91.
A master of the headed soccer-ball, Tony
Hateley cost Chelsea 100,000 in 1966,
which was then a record transfer fee for the
blues. Hateley started as a teenager for Notts
County in 1958, before hitting the big time
with Aston Villa five years later. His proclivity
for scoring with his head, made him a target
of many other clubs, and he would add Liverpool, Coventry City, Birmingham City, back
to the County, Oldham Athletic, before ending
up in America with the Boston Minutemen in
1974. He scored 211 league goals during his
pro-career, and though he never played for
England, his son Mark, also a centre-forward,
won 32 caps. Tony Hateley was 72.

of penalties from Greig Laidlaw in a 28-6

hammering. Scotland looked bereft of ideas
and their efforts were continually snuffed out
by powerful Irish play. The Irish ran in three
tries from Jamie Heaslip, Andrew Trimble
and Rob Kearney to secure an easy win.

Round Two: Ireland and France

benefit from home advantage again

Ireland And France

Set The Early Six
Nations Pace
Six Nations Round One:
Three Home Wins

THE FIRST TWO weekends of Six Nations

rugby sorted out the field into three groups
of two. Ireland and France emerged unbeaten
after two games, while Scotland and Italy
brought up the rear, their seasons seemingly
intent on avoiding the wooden spoon.
Wales are chasing their third consecutive championship and started in fine style:
a fifth-minute try from Alex Cuthbert who
benefited from a wicked bounce of the ball
leaving fullback Angelo Esposito in his first
international clutching thin air. It was the big
Welsh wings tenth try in 20 Tests.
The Italians were not to be humiliated two opportunist tries from centre
Michele Campagnaro saw to that. But in the
final analysis, the accurate boot of Leigh
Halfpenny ensured Italian indiscipline was
punished and Scott Williams scored a try in
the crucial dying moments of the first half.
Wales were comfortable but not convincing
winners at 23-15.
England opened their campaign in Paris
and were 16-3 down by the 22nd minute. In
the first half-minute a speculative kick ahead
by the French flyhalf cannoned off Billy Twelvetrees right into the hands of winger Yoann
Huget a matter of yards from the English line.
But England fought back with tries from Mike
Brown and dbutant Leighton Burrell and as
the final whistle beckoned, they were 24-19
ahead with a famous victory at hand.
But the sheer effort had tired the visitors
to the point where in the last attack as the
French swung the ball out wide, Alex Goode
bought a simple dummy from centre Gael
Fickou fresh on the field. He planted the ball
behind the posts for a simple conversion and
an unbelievable 26-24 win for France.
In Dublin, Scotland ran into an Irish
brick wall and could only pick up a couple

The following week, Ireland stayed in

Dublin to face Wales in a game that started in
bright sunshine and ended in lashing rain and
deep gloom. That at least were Welsh feelings as Ireland comprehensively dismantled
them using a kicking game inspired by Jonny
Sexton at flyhalf.
The Irish forwards enjoyed almost total
supremacy, shoving the visitors around at
will. Wales conceded two tries both earned
through powerful Irish scrum play. Sexton
couldnt miss a penalty kick but Leigh Halfpenny was only allowed one pot at goal which
prevented a whitewash but not the humiliation
of a 26-3 battering which Warren Gatland
later described as the worst of his career.
France predictably saw off the Italian
challenge in Paris with a 30-10 victory that
exposed the Azzurris lack of class.
England, on the other hand, quickly made
up for the disappointment in Paris with a
punishing 20-0 demolition job on Scotland.
The weather may have accounted for the
fact that England didnt score more, though
coincidentally their two try-scorers as in Paris
were Mike Brown and Leighton Burrell.
Stuart Lancasters decision to go for youth
and pace in the backs has certainly paid off.
This young English side can only get better,

Arsenal: Olivier Giroud came

back after two games on the
bench to score twice in the first
half-hour of a 4-1 dismantling of
Sunderland. Tomas Rosicky and Laurent
Koscielny tallied on either side of halftime
on the day the club unveiled a bronze statue
of Dennis Bergkamp outside the Clock End.
The Gunners conceded four goals in the first
20 minutes at Anfield and mustered only a
Mikel Arteta penalty kick in a 5-1 defeat. Alex
Oxlade-Chamberlain, injured on the opening
day of the season, showed what he can do
when fit by scoring twice early in the second
half of a 2-0 defeat of Crystal Palace.
Aston Villa: They lost 1-0 at
Newcastle and were left with just one
point and one goal in their last four
games. A 1-0 halftime lead provided
by Leanrdo Bacunas goal dissipated in a
2-1 loss at Everton. Sparkling saves by Brad
Guzan and crucial goalmouth blocks by Ron
Vlaar brought Villa a 0-0 tie at Cardiff City.
Cardiff City: Owner Vincent Tan
endured a miserable afternoon on
his 62nd birthday, watching a 4-0
thumping administered by Hull at
Cardiff City Stadium that was their worst
home defeat in nearly 14 years. The Bluebirds
have been shut out more times this season,
15, than any other Premier League team,
and the loss left them in 19th place with 11
matches to play. Frazier Campbell and Craig
Noone shot against the woodwork and they
needed six saves from David Marshall to earn
a 0-0 home draw with Aston Villa.
Chelsea: A stoppage-time goal
from a Frank Lampard free kick
snuck its way into the net for a
1-0 defeat of Everton that extended
their league unbeaten streak to 12 games.
Defender John Terry lunged at the ball near
the edge of the goal area and it caromed into
the net off keeper Tim Howard. Eden Hazard
ran rampant to score a hat trick and despite
the absence of Terry for the first time this
season Chelsea posted a 3-0 shutout of Newcastle United. Branislav Ivanovic followed up
a blocked Ramires attempt to smash a shot
that earned a 1-0 win at Manchester City.
Crystal Palace: Glenn Murray
made his first start for the club
in more than nine months and
nearly scored in the second minute against Manchester United,
but he turned his shot wide and an hour later
United broke through to take a 2-0 decision.
Tom Ince and Joe Ledley scored in the first
27 minutes and Marouane Chamakh put away
a controversial penalty kick in the second half
to down West Bromwich Albion, 3-1. Murray,
sidelined since suffering a knee injury in the
first leg of the promotion semifinal last May,
drew a huge ovation when he came on as
a substitute.
Everton: Their winless run
extended to five matches in a
1-0 loss at Chelsea despite seven
saves including a spectacular
double stop by goalie Tim Howard, who got
a piece of John Terrys point-blank deflection
in stoppage time but couldnt keep it out of
the net. Two solid shots by Leon Osman were
repelled by good saves. Steven Naismith
equalized four minutes after coming on as
a sub and with just five minutes left Kevin
Mirallas struck the winning goal of a 2-1
victory over Aston Villa.

EURO 2016

GROUPS DRAW

ENGLAND got what appears to be a favourable

draw for the Euro 2016 Championship, held in
France last month.
Alongside England in Group E will be Switzerland, Slovenia, Estonia, San Marino and Lithuania,
and the nations will play each other home and away
in qualifiers which are due to kick off this autumn.
Wales also appear to have been given a decent
draw but Scotland and the Republic of Ireland have
been drawn together in a tough group and Northern
Ireland may also face a tough task.
Group A: Holland, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Iceland,
Latvia, Czech Rep.
Group B: Bosnia, Andorra, Israel, Belgium,
Wales, Cyprus.
Group C: Spain, Luxembourg, Macedonia,
Belarus, Slovakia, Ukraine.
Group D: Germany, Gibraltar, Georgia,
Scotland, Poland, Rep of Ireland.
Group E: England, San Marino, Lithuania,
Estonia, Slovenia, Switzerland.
Group F: Greece, Faroe Islands, N Ireland,
Finland, Hungary, Romania.
Group G: Russia, Liechtenstein, Austria,
Moldova, Montenegro, Sweden.
Group H: Italy, Malta, Norway, Croatia,
Azerbaijan, Bulgaria.
Group I: Portugal, Albania, Armenia, Serbia,
Denmark *France
* All Group I teams will play France home and away but
the results will not count towards qualification. As host
nation France is automatically qualified.

Fulham: Former German international and Bayern Munich manager

Felix Magath debuted as Cottagers
boss in a 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion. Ashkan Dejagahs goal in the
28th minute stood up until they conceded an
equalizer with four minutes remaining. They
led twice at home against Liverpool via an
own goal and strike by Kieran Richardson but
succumbed in stoppage time to a 3-2 defeat.
Darren Bent stole a goal and a point late in
stoppage time at Old Trafford to secure a 2-2
tie. Steve Sidwell had deftly tucked away a
Lewis Holtby chip to open the scoring.
Hull City: Two goals by Nikica
Jelavic filled the sandwich braced
by those of Tom Huddlestone
and Jake Livermore as the Tigers
inflicted a 4-0 mauling at Cardiff City. Shane
Long scored his second goal in as many
games and Jelavic tacked on a clincher in
the second half to record a 2-0 victory at
Sunderland.
Liverpool: Jordan Henderson
and Daniel Sturridge each scored
twice as Liverpool never trailed
but had to keep scoring to outlast
Swansea City, 4-3. Sturridge
netted an equalizer and won the penalty kick
by which Steven Gerrard scored the winner
in stoppage time for a riveting 3-2 win at
Fulham. Kolo Toures own goal put Liverpool
behind and Phillipe Coutinho matched a
second goal caused by a Liverpool defensive
error. Martin Skrtel stunned Arsenal, and just
about everybody else, by scoring twice in the
first 10 minutes to set off a 5-1 trampling.
Raheem Sterling netted two and Sturridge
also scored.
Manchester City: Yaya Toures
strike with 20 minutes to play
eased City past Stoke City, 1-0,
despite an astonishing miss from
two yards out by Edin Dzeko. After inflicting
a 5-1 thrashing of Spurs at Tottenham, City
failed to score in back-to-back games for
the first time this season; they lost at home,
1-0, to Chelsea, and tied Norwich City, 0-0,
away. The loss to Chelsea ended a 61-match
streak during which they had not been shut
out at home.
Manchester United: The big
guns did the business to win,
2-0, at Crystal Palace. Robin
Van Persie broke a scoreless
deadlock in the 62nd minute from the penalty
spot with his fourth goal in the last five games
and six minutes later Wayne Rooney celebrated a new contract by netting a clincher.
After falling behind early to Fulham at home,
United struck twice in two minutes on goals
by Van Persie and Michael Carrick, and then
succumbed to a Darren Bent strike deep into
stoppage time to end up at 2-2.
Newcastle: The Magpies
ended a run of five straight home
losses in dramatic fashion: Loic
Remy struck in the second
minute of stoppage time to down Aston Villa,
1-0. After hitting the post late in regulation,
Remy pivoted in the goalmouth to volley his
12th goal of the season. They had previously plummeted to their fourth straight home
defeat a first-time occurrence in Premier
League play against Tottenham, 4-0.
Norwich City: Robert Snodgrass
curled a shot into the bottom corner
from outside the penalty area early
in the second half to give Norwich
just their second win in 12 games, a 1-0

defeat of Tottenham. The Canaries survived

a Manchester City invasion to secure a 0-0
tie. They defended stoutly and correctly lost
a goal to an offside call when Gary Hooper
swept the home the rebound of a saved Leroy
Fer header.
Southampton: Maya Yoshida
headed home his first Premier
League goal from Steven Daviss
free kick to supply a 1-0 lead at
West Ham, yet despite totaling 25 shots the
Saints couldnt score again and fell, 3-1. The
Saints had run their unbeaten streak to six
games by winning at Hull, 1-0, with a Jose
Fontes goal in the 69th minute. An elegant chip
by Jay Rodriguez came back off the crossbar
Stoke City: The Potters needed
some late defensive heroics to grab
a 1-1 home draw with Swansea
City. They took an early lead with
a Peter Crouch goal but after conceding an
equalizer early in the second half were rescued
by a Ryan Shawcross goalmouth clearance
and a superb save by Asmir Begovic. Goals by
Charlie Adam seven minutes before and after
halftime powered the Potters to a 2-1 home
triumph over Manchester United. Adams
first goal was a free kick that deflected into
the net off Michael Carrick, and his second,
a first-time hit of a blocked attempt, flew into
the top corner from 25 yards out.
Sunderland: Emanuele Giaccherini scored in the 81st
minute to highlight an otherwise
bleak encounter that ended
4-1 at Arsenal. The Black Cats posted their
second straight 3-0 win by belting Newcastle
in the Tyne-Wear derby with goals by Fabio
Borini, Adam Johnson, and Jack Colback.
Johnsons goal was his seventh in as many
games.
Swansea City: The Swans
battled back repeatedly at Anfield
but came up just short in a 4-3 loss
to Liverpool. Jonjo Shelveys goal
cut a 2-0 deficit in half and a pair of goals by
Wilfried Bony drew them level at 3-3 but after
falling behind again they couldnt muster a
fourth. Chico Flores scored his third goal of the
season to rescue a 1-1 tie at Stoke City just
a few days after a training-ground argument
with interim manager Gary Monk.
Tottenham Hotspur: Emmanuel
Adebayors early and late goals
powered Spurs to a 4-0 win at
Newcastle. Paulinho tallied early in
the second half to double the lead
and Nacer Chadli got the fourth in the final
minutes of regulation. Adebayor also hit the
goal midway through the second half by which
Spurs downed Everton, 1-0.
West Bromwich Albion: Matej
Vydras shot in the 86th minute
against Fulham squeezed through
the hands of the opposing goalkeeper and with the help of goal-line technology was ruled to be the goal by which
West Brom earned a 1-1 tie. Thievy Bifouma
scored on his debut early in the second half
at Crystal Palace but despite piling up a 17-10
advantage in shots the Baggies never caught
up and were beaten, 3-1. Victor Anichebe
came on as a sub to score an equalizer, his
third goal of the season, in the 87th minute
of a 1-1 tie with Chelsea.
West Ham United: The Hammers rebounded from conceding
an early goal at home to beat
Norwich City, 3-1, for their fourth
straight win Matt Jarvis equalized from a
Kevin Nolan cross in the 20th minute, Carlton
Cole hit the winner three minutes later, and
Nolan punctuated his 100th appearance by
scoring with an overhead kick in the second
half. He departed shortly thereafter via a substitution to a standing ovation. Nolan scored
both goals in a 2-0 triumph at Aston Villa.

Pietersen England Career

Over After Being Dropped
KEVIN PIETERSENS England career ended after nine turbulent years
February 4, when the brash batsman
was dumped in a bid to rebuild the
team following an embarrassing tour
of Australia.
The divisive former captain, whose
talent has regularly been overshadowed
by his ability to attract controversy, discovered he was being dropped following
a meeting of team management at Lords
to decide his future.
And after being axed for the tour of
West Indies and the subsequent World
Twenty20 tournament, the 33-year-old
Pietersen signaled his international
career was over.
Although I am obviously very sad
the incredible journey has come to an

end, Im also hugely proud of what

we, as a team, have achieved over the
past nine years, Pietersen said in a
statement.
I believe I have a great deal still to
give as a cricketer, he added. I will
continue to play but deeply regret that
it wont be for England.
WOEFUL
The England and Wales Cricket
Board is trying to usher in a new era
after a woeful tour of Australia when
England was beaten 5-0 in the Ashes
and won just one limited-overs game.
By dumping Pietersen, the ECB said
it hopes to start the rebuilding process.
Clearly this was a tough decision because Kevin has been such an outstanding player for England as the fact that

he is the countrys leading run scorer

in international cricket demonstrates,
said Paul Downton, the England team
managing director.
However everyone was aware that
there was a need to begin the long term
planning after the Australia tour. Therefore we have decided the time is right
to look to the future and start to rebuild
not only the team but also team ethic
and philosophy.
Pietersen has been accused of being
a disruptive influence within the England dressing room several times since
he made his debut in 2004, but played
104 tests, 136 one-day games and 37
Twenty20 fixtures.
We all wish Kevin the very best in
the rest of his career, Downton said.

Lizzy Yarnold Takes The Gold,

Medals In Snowboarding & Curling

A blitz of negative publicity preceded the

first Olympics in Russia since 1980, but the
$51bn, 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games,
February 7-23, was on schedule. The opening ceremony featured a colourful panorama
of Russian history and culture, where 5,000
performers and volunteers held spectators
attention in a glittering spectacle at the Fisht
Olympic Stadium. There were no references
to Lenin or Stalin however. A variety of light
displays, strains of Tchaikovsky, coupled
with ballet vignettes and an extraordinary
blaze of colour and music. The parade of
competing nations entering from an underground ramp in the middle of the stadium
was a novelty not seen before. A humongous
firework display concluded the ceremony,
and President Vladimir Putin, announced
the games open. Some 87 nations were at
Sochi, along with 2,900 competitors, chasing
98 gold medals in 15 sporting disciplines.
Britains squad of 56 was led out by flag carrier John Eloy, a speed skater preparing for
his third consecutive Olympics. The American
squad numbered 230 athletes.

Pellegrini Charged By UEFA,

Apologizes To Referee

MANCHESTER City manager Manuel Pellegrini was charged with misconduct by UEFA
on last month, hours after apologizing for
blaming a referee for his teams Champions
League loss to Barcelona.
After questioning the integrity of Jonas
Eriksson, Pellegrini faces a touch-line ban
when his case is heard February 28 by
UEFAs control and disciplinary body.
UEFA announced that Pellegrini was

Figures by football finance experts Deloitte

released last month show that teams in Eng-

lands top division had an outlay of 760m

over the summer and January windows,

nating the competition from the very start.

The skeleton appears to be a favoured British
event, as Amy Williams captured the gold in
Vancouver 2010. Reigning world champion
Shelley Rudman, captured silver in this event
in 2006, but this years finish was well down
the field. The 25-year-old Kent born gold
medalist, lives and trains in Bath, and broke
into a swathe of joyful tears on the podium
as the gold medal was presented.
Earlier, snowboarder Jenny Jones, put Britain on the medal table with a bronze medal in
the slopestyle. Britain has won some 23 medals (nine gold) at the previous winter games
since 1924, all won on ice. The 33-year-old
Bristol athlete made history by claiming Britains very first medal ever on snow.
Britains Curling teams were in the fray
from the very start and the mens squad skippered by David Murdoch, reached the medal
round beating Norway 6-5, then winning
their semi-final against World Champions
Sweden by the same score-line. In the final,
the Canadians were in top form however,
and won 9-3, giving Canada the gold and
Britain the silver. Nerves played a part in the
final, as the British team struggled to find their
earlier momentum.
Im disappointed now, but a silver medal
is scarily cool, said David Murdoch.
The all-Scottish, British womens side, led
by Eve Muirhead, showed their extraordinary
talents in the round robin matches by chalking 12-3 victories over both the USA and
Japan, that put them in the history books for
the biggest recorded wins in Curling at any
Olympics. The womens squad are the reigning world champions, but lost 6-4 to Canada,
in the semi-finals, but beat Switzerland 6-5
for the bronze. The final stone gave Britain
the winning point and the medal.
shattering the previous record of 670m from
the 2008/09 season.
The Premier League is midway through
the first year of lucrative broadcasting
deals that are generating more than $8.5bn
through 2016.
Frances top clubs were the second heaviest spenders in Europe in January, according
to Deloitte, although their total outlay was only
around 40 percent of the Premier League.

Man United In Talks With

Companies Over New Kit Deal

MANCHESTER United is negotiating with

several sportswear companies as the Premier League champions look to secure a
new kit deal.
The clubs current 13-year sponsorship
deal with Nike, which is worth 303m,
expires at the end of the 2014-15 season.
United has one of the most lucrative
brands in sport and is the biggest money-maker in English football, generating
363.2m in 2012-13.
The club, which is listed on the New York
Stock Exchange, will receive $559m under
a seven-year shirt sponsorship with General
Motors Cos Chevrolet division from next
season.

Swansea Fires Manager

Michael Laudrup

MICHAEL LAUDRUP was fired as Swansea

manager last month, paying the price for a
slump in the year since delivering the south
Wales clubs first major trophy.
The Dane is leaving the Premier League
club after 20 months, having signed a new
contract in March 2013 after being linked with
leading clubs following his teams triumph in
the League Cup.
Though, Swansea was 12th in the standings but just two points above the relegation
zone, prompting the 49-year-old Laudrups
dismissal.

Lizzy Yarnold wraps herself in the Union Jack after securing her Gold medal for womens skeleton.
We knew we had to step it up, said the
teary eyed Eve Muirhead. The girls were
fantastic.
Sadness and disappointment for Speedskater Elise Christie, a bronze medalist in
the 1,000m at the world championships last
year, was considered a potential medaling
prospect in either the 500m,1,000m or the
1,500m skate. But calamity struck on all three
occasions. Two races she was involved with
resulted in a collision, and both times judges
ruled she was responsible and disqualified.
The third disqualification was because she
Garry Monk, the 34-year-old defender who
has been out injured since September, has
replaced Laudrup, alongside first team coach
Alan Curtis, for the foreseeable future,
Swansea said.

Spain, Greece, Bosnia To Play

In US Ahead Of World Cup

DEFENDING champion Spain will prepare for

the World Cup in the United States along with
Greece, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Ivory Coast,
Nigeria and Honduras.
Soccer United Marketing, an affiliate of
Major League Soccer, says it will organize
exhibition games involving those six nations
along with Bolivia and El Salvador from May
27 to June 10.
England announced last month it will play
a pair of matches at Sun Life Stadium in
Miami Gardens, facing Ecuador on June 4
and Honduras on June 7.
The World Cup will be in Brazil for the first
time since 1950 and opens June 12.

Man United To Go On PreSeason Tour Of US

MANCHESTER United will prepare for next

season by going on tour to the United States.
No details have been announced, but United
says it will visit several cities on its first US
trip since 2011.
Plans for the tour might be disrupted if
David Moyes side has to take part in the
early qualifying stages of the Europa League
in early August.
The English Premier League champions
are struggling in their first season since Alex
Ferguson retired, sitting seventh in the standings, seven points behind the Champions
League qualification places.
Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester City have also announced preseason
tours of the US.

line and did not officially end her run. Former
speed-skater Wilf OReilly, commented that
the decisions against her were extremely
harsh.

the 23-year-old

in Scotland, responding to a BBC
reporter. But I will

more years and try

On the final day
Elise Christie of competition,
Britains four man
bobsled team were just a tenth of a second
off a medal.

Gold medalist Lizzy Yarnold, led the British

team out at the closing ceremony as Britain
recorded it best medal tally at a Winter
Olympics since 1924. The Russians topped
the medal table with 33 medals, the USA collected 28, while Norway with 26 and Canada
with 25. Skiing and winter training facilities
are sparse and not as luxurious in Britain,
as they are in the regular top winter Olympic
performing nations; but UK Sport reckons its
nearly 14m Olympic budget was well spent
considering the medal count.
