The Importance of Math and Literature Integration
After reading the article, Literature-Based Mathematics in Middle School by David L.
Haury, I have learned a few things about the importance of math and literature integration. I have
learned that even though a vast amount of Elementary math books are fiction, they still provide
great insight into mathematics. I have also discovered the benefits of using childrens literature
to teach mathematics and how to use it appropriately. I have also discovered the importance of
the context of the book. Finally, I after reading this article, I have realized that this information
will be very helpful to me as a teacher.
Even though most Elementary math books are fiction they are mostly formed from
constructions of our minds, products of our attempts to understand our worlds, real and
imaginary. Some mathematical ideas have obvious practical applications, while other ideas seem
very abstract, with little apparent connection to life as most of us experience it. However, all
mathematical ideas take shape through our attempts to communicate, and therefore find their
way into our literature (Haury, 2001). I believe that this is why Elementary fiction books are so
effective for childrens learning.
Linking mathematics instruction to children's literature has become increasingly popular
in recent years for a variety of reasons. Some suggest that the literature connection motivates
students, provokes interest, and helps students connect mathematical ideas to their personal
experiences. Math instruction through literature even accommodates to children with different
learning styles, promotes critical thinking, and provides a context for using mathematics to solve
problems. Though any given book could likely be used in multiple ways, it is crucial to use
literature to provide vicarious mathematical experiences based on real problems or situations of
interest to teachers and students (Haury, 2001).
THE IMPORTANCE OF MATH AND LITERATURE INTEGRATION 3

After all the information that I received from this article, I know that it will be helpful to
me as a future teacher. I now know that it is okay and preferred if childrens literature is fiction.
The students will still learn because the information is based on the constructions of human
thoughts and ideas, while containing real and imaginary thoughts. I know now the importance of
integrating reading with mathematics and what to look for in an effective childrens mathematics
book.
