Mindtools are computer-based programs or applications that are used to
allow students to think critically. Because computer literacy is no longer a problem,
teachers are now using mindtools to help enhance students learning and
understanding. (2000) Jonassen, Peck, and Wilson (1999) argued that learning
should be active, constructive, intentional and authentic. For these reasons
meaningful and useful mindtools should be researched by all teachers for their
content areas.
Pearsonmylabandmastering.com is a great mindtool that can be used for
knowledge construction, reflective thinking, cognitive partnership and scaffold
thinking. All teachers in all content areas can use this program. The students have
to create an account and get connected with their teachers class. Once the students
are properly connected with their class they are able to view lectures by the teacher
and complete homework alone or with assistance by the program. They are able to
do quizzes & tests, some may be password protected depending on the teachers
discretion. The students are also able to post discussions and chat with their peers
as well as email their teacher a specific question about a lecture. If a student does
not succeed on a particular assignment there is an option to have personalized
homework that targets the specific type of question they got incorrect in order for
them to succeed on future assignments. This program is very user friendly and also
liked by many parents because all grades are accessible immediately after the
assignment is submitted.
While evaluating this mind tool it seems to fit along with all the qualifications
for a great instructional tool. It is computer-based and a readily available website.
By personal use of this software on the college level it is very affordable. At the
college level the students have to purchase themselves but at the high school level
where I am intending to use it, the school would purchase a license and the students
would be able to create their account for free. This application certainly promotes
knowledge construction because the students are completing their homework,
quizzes and tests with the program. Pearson My Lab causes the students to think
critically because once they are complete with their current homework assignments
the program will give them a critical thinking assignment in which is more
challenging. Lastly, the program is easy to use and the learning can be easily
transferred into the classroom.
