Course Objectives
This course is an introduction to French language and culture. The beginner fundamentals of French pronunciation,
grammar, and culture are presented through a development of: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The 5 Cs of
language learning are emphasized: communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities. The
importance of communication and cultural awareness is stressed through a wide variety of activities (group/pair work,
videos, audio recordings, computer assignments, etc.). Cultural topics may include the history of Francophone countries,
art, literature, sport and cuisine. Students are expected to listen carefully and speak only French to the teacher and
classmates during the designated times. Students are expected to participate enthusiastically in all activities.

Make-up Procedures (see student handbook)
It is the students responsibility, if absent, to check online for assignments and make arrangements on the day of return
with the teacher to turn in missed assignments. Make-up work must be completed by the student within the time
specified by the teacher (typically the amount of time the student was absent plus 1 day). Late work will receive a 10%
reduction in grade for each day late.

Fulton County Recovery Policy
Opportunities designed to allow students to recover from a low or failing cumulative grade will be allowed when all
work required to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course
requirements including attendance. Students should contact the teacher concerning recovery opportunities. Teachers are
expected to establish a reasonable time period for recovery work to be completed during the semester. All recovery
work must be directly related to course objectives and must be completed ten school days prior to the end of the
semester.

World Language Recovery (Relearning & Reassessment) Procedure (only available for major tests):
World Language tests measure student mastery of standards. Recovery is available for students who wish to show
increased mastery through relearning and reassessment. Only one recovery attempt per test is allowed and must be
completed before the next major test (usually 1-2 weeks). The student initiates the recovery process and must meet all
the teachers requirements (help sessions, practice work, etc.) within the teacher-given time period. A contract with all
requirements is signed by the teacher, student, and parents. The recovery test or sections may be in a different format but
cover the same standards. The student receives the higher grade of the two assessments. The expectation is that the
students recovered grade will show a significant improvement in mastery of standards.

Technology Policy
Technology is a useful tool for learning languages. However, WL department practice is that you may use electronic
devices only when your teacher directs, and only for educational purposes. Unauthorized use will result in
consequences.

Academic Integrity
Plagiarism of any kind and/or cheating will result in the grade of 0 on any graded work, and disciplinary action may
follow. The use of translator programs (such as Google translate) or excessive help from a native speaker will be
considered plagiarism. For writing assignments, students may be asked to reproduce work at school if academic
integrity is at risk.

*The syllabus may be updated as needed throughout the semester.
