spring constant= influence area x subgrade modulus of soil.
Unit of subgrade modulus = force/length^3
Unit of Spring = Force/ Length.
Staad derives Spring constants by itself, this facility is called SPRING SUPPORT
GENERATION.
2 Options- ELASTIC MAT
PLATE MAT
(a.)ELASTIC MAT
This method uses Delaunay triangle method for calculation of influence area.
Elastic mat command is associated with joint list.
take care that it forms a closed surface.
the list should have min 3 nodes.
IMP: the internal angle formed by two adjacent edges connecting 3 consecutive no
des should be less than 180 i.e., region should form a convex polygon.
LIMITAION: Failure to form straight edges and convex polygon gives erroneous spr
ing constans.
in such cases split the elastic mat command.
ADVANTAGE:
Since this method uses nodes to generate constants mat can be difined using plat
e or solid element.
(b.)PLATE MAT
This overcomes the limitation of convex polygon.
it can be used only with plates.
influence area can be printed.
MODULUS OF SUBGRADE REACTION: measure of stiffness of soil if it were to behave
like a spring.
it is the relationship b/w bearing pressure and soil deflection.
to get spring constants use this command : PRINT SUPPORT INFORMATION
