Instructional Cycle
Essential Questions
Based on what you know, how would you
explain the instructional cycle to a friend
who is not a teacher?
Why is the relationship between essential
questions and student learning so
important?

Standards-Based
Instructional Cycle
Think about the following words for 1 minute:
proficient,essentials,data, assessment,
expectations, performance, plan, standards
Now, write down anything that comes to mind
about these words. Here are some ideas: how do
these words fit into your instruction? Why do we
use these words when talking about students?
Youll have 3 minutes to write.
Share your writing or ideas with a person near
you. You will have 3 minutes to share.
Anyone want to share their thoughts with the
group?

Activity
(Jigsaw)
At your table, there are components of the standards based
instructional cycle. You are to choose a component and then meet
with your respective groups in the designated areas.
With your group, read and discuss the selected component. With your
group, please complete the questions that were provided with the
component. (you will need this when you switch groups) Your group
will have 5 minutes to work together to read, discuss, and answer the
questions.

Activity continued
Now, you will need to look at the number on the
back of your paper and quickly switch to that
location. You are now with a group that has all
the components.
With your group, take 8 minutes (for the group)
to share out your responses to the questions from
your component. You will have to talk quickly,
and try to share out the most important points.
Any comments from the group?

Essential Questions
Essential Questions are a powerful way to
engage students and evoke insightful answers.
(Ainsworth p. 47)
There are several characteristics that should be
thought about when developing essential
questions. They are:
Open ended, yet focus inquiry into a specific topic
Nonjudgmental, but answering them requires high-
level cognitive work
Contain emotive force and intellectual bite
Succinct- a handful of words that demand a lot

Standards-Based
Instructional Cycle
Essential Questions
With your team and using your standards or
curriculum map, begin writing some effective
essential questions. Please try to use the
characteristics when developing your EQs.
Your team will share out one of your EQs at the
end.
Your team will have approximately 25 minutes to
work.

Standards-Based
Instructional Cycle
Closure
Review goals and objectives
Review and discuss briefly the essential
questions of the day
Any comments?
