/ *Mandarin lesson time *Three pathways : MFL----- Mandarin as a Foreign Language is designed for non-native/non heritage students. MSL----- Mandarin as a Second language is for heritage students who have been living out of China (or other areas where Chinese is used as an official language), or non-heritage students who have been living in China for a long time and are fluent in speaking Mandarin. CNL----- Students in this pathway acquired and learned Chinese as their 1st language while receiving their prior school education by using Chinese as instructional medium.

*Curriculum CNL: Shanghai local curriculum with approaches that is suitable for our students. MSL: Zhongwen with adaptions to our students MFL: Thematic based approach with the focus on communication skills and practicality
Curriculum Year 2 Timetable. Break time 10:30am 11:00am (with Year 1). Lunch time 12:00pm 1:00pm (with Reception). Clubs 2:00pm 3:00pm on Friday. Mandarin Children are set for Mandarin under the three main pathways. Mandarin reading books can be changed at the start of the school day. Maths We group children according to ability and appropriate mathematical curriculum needs in Y2 Decisions for setting are based on assessments, work in class and the needs of the child. Phonics We group children according to their understanding of sounds and their ability to use them effectively. The focus in the phonics session links to the spelling lists. To the classrooms Houses and House Points DUCKS is continuing to develop the role of Houses this year. 1 House point awarded for achievement (academic, personal, social) 2 House points awarded for exceptional achievement. Year 2 House Representatives will be chosen by students this term. Spellings Lists given out and learned weekly. Spellings will relate to the sound focus of their phonics group for that week. We encourage LSCWC method: Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check method. When helping with spelling at home, remember some key words / camera words are not phonetic. Homework 1) Spellings, 2) Reading, 3) Mathematics, 4) Curriculum Diversity (writing, comprehension, map work, research or creative). Given out on Monday and returned by the next Monday. No piece of homework should take longer than 20 mins, unless it is a project over many weeks. Please feedback to the teacher if there are any problems. Flexibility We are aware of other commitments outside of school. Reading In Year 2 we hope that every child will read at home for 10 20 minutes every night. Please sign the link book. Reading proficiency consists of 2 parts: Fluency and expression of reading Comprehension of the text. Reading tests are conducted by the teacher before a child progresses onto the next book band. For those days when your child has PE, please feel free to send them to school in their PE kit. Lunch boxes are stored in the labelled cupboards outside the dining hall on the ground floor.
